Subject: Century on SCT July 4th Weekend?

Just trying to gauge who might be in town and interested in a Century ride the weekend before July 4th (or even the days leading up to July 4th or just after).  Hopefully I'm catching everyone early enough we can talk options before everyone makes out of town plans.

Here are the options that work for me:

June 30 Sat

July 1 Sun

July 2 Mon - This is a holiday for me

July 3 Tue - Holiday for me.  Also since lots of people are running the Peachtree, I'm guessing that this is probably a no go for most.

July 4 Wed - Running in the Peachtree as I'm sure most people are so I gather this is probably not the best day.

July 5 Thu - I'm taking vacation so this work work

July 6 - Fri - I'm taking vacation so this would work

July 7 - Sat

July 8 - Sun

Chime in if you are interested and what days work for you.

My husband and I are a maybe too. I don't know if we'd have time to do the whole distance but we could try to do alot of it. Either day on the weekend would probably work best for us. (30th or 1st)

I thought the ride out to Frankie's and back was about a 60 mile ride? We're still a maybe but I don't know if I could do it, my longest ride to date is only about 30 miles. I was thinking I'd like to get one long ride in (40-50 miles) before attempting this ride but we can't work it out with our schedules. So, we're a very tentative maybe.

I've got this on my radar screen.  I am running the P'tree Road Race, but not for time, so even if I'm still recovering a bit from a long bike ride that'll be "otay!"

Count me as "tentative" for now and will firm up as we get closer to the date.

This sounds good -- pencil me in as tentative -- I have never done a century ride, this will be fun. I need to log in more ride time.

We would just have to go maybe 15-20 miles past frankies to make it a century.

I think you guys are not taking a good look at Jonathan's last post. He says ride past Frankie's. The idea would be to eat at Frankie's on the way back. The SCT splits at about the 37 mile marker. It is 66 miles from Floyd road to Frankie's and back. That would be 74 from Mavell Rd and back. We could ride 13 miles past Frankie's from Mavell Rd or 17 miles past if we start at Floyd Rd., turn around and eat on the way back and voila... 100 miles.

Never done that distance before.  How is it riding that far after eating?

Itrithere4iam - 2007-05-15 7:23 AM Never done that distance before.  How is it riding that far after eating?

I'd vote for the "Floyd to 13 past Frankie's" route and eat on the way back.  A Century on the Comet is probably pretty easy, relatively speaking.  I did my one and only last November (in Rutledge) and it wasn't bad.  It was cold (30's) at the start and we had pretty nasty head/cross winds the entire day, but it worked out.

Having a good base in place is critical to completing any ride of significant distance and decent nutrition during the ride plays an equally vital role.  FWIW, prior to my Century, I'd done quite a few 50-75 mile rides, but nothing longer.  So, if you can get some of those under your belt between now and the 30th, you should be fine.

Eating (something reasonable) at Frankie's on the way back would be perfect, because at that point (70+ miles), your body's going to need some significant intake in order to be able to finish strong.  This was the thing I learned the hard way during my Century, despite the warning of a good friend.  Somehow, me and another rider missed the rest stop at Mile 73 (if they were even there - there were so few Century riders they might've closed up shop)...anyway, we had GU and plenty of liquid, but a banana, an Uncrustable sandwich, anything substantial would've really helped...as it stood, the GU/gatorade was not enough and I bonked at mile 83.  I got home OK, but it was hard going.

 Just my $.02

Good advice Lou. Here is my 0.02 cents. The difficulty of the SCT is determined by the pace of the rider/riders. If you go slow enough, I do not think 100 miles on the SCT would be a big deal to anyone that we ride with. It is just a matter of sitting on the bike seat for that long.

Bep rode 66 miles to Frankie's and back a few weeks ago. I think that she had ridden less than 30 miles this year before that. We rode slow, averaged 13 mph, stopped and rested a few times, and ate a nice pasta meal at Frankie's. I have to say that even with the going slow and resting I was extremely impressed that she was able to do it. I kept trying to get her to wait in Rockmart and let me come back and get her. The only real problem that she had was that the seat was too high because she was on one of my old bikes and she got some tendenitis in her achilles heels.

If not for the seat/achilles heel issue, I think she could have done 100 even though she had not done any riding. I was quite impressed. That being said, I would not recommend that to anyone. As Lou said, the more long rides you can get in at the pace you want to ride, the better

If you can do 30, you can do 100 on the SCT.  It's pancake flat.

I did a 55 mile 3 gap ride with my longest prior ride being 25 miles.

Trust me, you will do fine.
