![]() I am thinking about getting some highlights in my hair - nothing too crazy, and at the salon I go to, not out of a box. I am worried though, that swimming 2-3 times a week will ruin them and it would be a waste of money in that regard. Anyone have any thoughts? |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I put conditioner on my hair before I put my swim cap on. It helps the color to last a little longer and help to keep your hair from getting brittle. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do the same - wet the hair, a little conditioner. Not too much or the cap pops off. Maintaining the look appropriate for my "inner redhead" is tricky, as it tends to fade in sun and chlorine, but after a few years I've got it down. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It seems for me that the red fades faster than browns or blond shades. I also swim 2-3 times per week and color only when the roots begin to show. My hair grows faster than the clorine can fade it out. |

Science Nerd![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My blond and light brown highlights have always been fine in the pool. The red ones seem to fade a lot more quickly. If anyone has advice on keeping red in your hair, I'd love to hear it. ![]() |

![]() | ![]() Ditto to wetting/soaking with tap water first in the shower, then applying conditioner. I darken my hair every 3 months - it just FADES like crazy. My lady said being outside in the sun contributes a lot, as well as dark colors just fading faster. I found it odd that she didn't have any recommendations for protecting color in chlorine, except for what I mentioned above. |

Sensei![]() | ![]() This is a repeat - but I'm using it as a way to vent.... My fiance has requested/required me to get my hair highlighted for the wedding. I was banking on the excuse that "my hair will turn green due to all the swimming I do - sorry honey, otherwise I would love to do it......" She drug me into the salon, they told me that it is not a problem if I wet my hair before going into the pool. I was told that hair is like sponge, so if you get it wet first with clean water, it is already saturated so it can't soak up the chlorine and ruin the color. So now I'm $130 poorer - but have a nice hair cut and color that will grow out in two months.... sigh...... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My stylist/colorist actually recommended that I STOP getting highlights because the chlorine just took the color right out. Which is nice of her, since it's money out of her pocket. I have really dark brown hair, so she has to first bleach the pieces of hair that are going to be highlighted, then adds back in a couple of colors to the bleached hair. The color always fades leaving me with unnatural-looking, really blonde streaks. The hair bleaching plus the chlorine really damages my hair badly(which is already really dry because it's naturally curly), regardless of putting conditioner in my hair before getting in the pool. Maybe I'm worse off because of the naturally curly aspect. |

Sensei![]() | ![]() I exagerate - she said she likes my hair longer with some highlights (they use to me more natural when I was outside all the time). I have been keeping it really short for the tri season (half inch long). The wedding is more for her than me, so I have been giving in on almost eveything (except for the food and booze! - that's my call!). It's just not that important to me - so if it makes her happy..... Otherwise, it's been a team effort. She is getting so stressed out and I probably don't help because I just laugh.... |

The red ones seem to fade a lot more quickly. If anyone has advice on keeping red in your hair, I'd love to hear it. ![]() Right now I'm using Aveda's color|conserve shampoo and conditioner most of the time. There are a couple of others that have worked for me as well. Regular shampoos strip the red out faster. I color my own hair, alternating between a couple of different red to red-brown shades so that i'm not just piling more red on top of faded red for the Ronald McDonald effect. As long as I don't go too long in between, it looks pretty good. Oh, and I don't swim as often as I should. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always lose my red coloring, no matter what. Some people just have tough to color hair, and if that is the case, the chlorine can strip it right out. For my regular brown that covers my gray, I agree with a thorough soaking down. I've also found that instead of regular glop it on conditioner, a nice spray (Love the Johnsons Kids no tangles stuff) makes for easier application and less slippery-ness. |
