Subject: SCAMMED BY A BT'R!!!!!

I just wanted to send a word of caution to one and all. I am a long-time BT'r and truly believed that the brother/sisterhood on here was without a distasteful element. Unfortunately, I have lost $1300 to a BT'r who offered to sell me her tri bike.

She answered a WTB ad that I had posted here and we communicated for quite awhile about it. She then emailed and said that she was in a dire financial situation (going through a divorce with 2 kids) and needed to know if I wanted to buy her Cervelo, or if she should put it on ebay. I decided to buy it, sent $1300 by paypal and waited. She told me she would ship it that next day. 24 days later, multiple emails full of lies about when she would ship it, threats from us, and we still don't have the bike, our money, or signs that she shipped it.

We filed in NC small claims court and made a police report. She is not returning our emails or our phone calls, either to cell or her work.  My heart is sick about this. I thought I could get a bike and help out a fellow Bt'r and took a risk...a big one.  I really wanted to believe all that she told me was going on. That she was going through a divorce, that her son broke his pelvis, that she was helping out her sister with a new baby and that it just fell through the cracks. But her lack of response and failure to ship the bike OR refund our money, tells me her intentions aren't good.

If you are buying gear from someone out of state....please, please consider placing the money in a Paypal escrow account or paying with credit card via Pay pal.  We will spend $100's of to try to retrieve a portion of our $1300 and I STILL won't have a tri bike.

Wow.  That really sucks.  I'm so sorry!

The site IS getting really big these days.  It's a shame that with size we are going to get some low lifes floating around.

Good luck!

Bummer.  Sorry to hear that.  It's unbelievable the stories people will concoct to draw people in.  Hope you're able to get some of the money back.

Was this someone we "knew", or someone with few/no posts who signed on specifically to sell a bike?

Somebody with 30 posts on BT.  Doesn't look like a dedicated scammer.

That sucks.  Have you followed up with paypal?  They should have the means to recover your money as long as you followed their terms of usage.  .

We have followed up by filing a claim, however they can only recover funds if there are enough left in their paypal account. They cannot gain access to personal funds.

Just sent a couple of PMs. I found her husband on BT as well.

They don't seem like scammers...I looked up some old posts, and they seem like normal folks. Weird.

I agree. That's why I trusted her and we sent the money without tying it up in Escrow for weeks. I really do believe that she needs the money. But time after time, she sent me emails saying one thing and another thing was true. When I sent the money, she told me she paid the bike store to ship it  and it'd be out in the mail tomorrow.  10 days later she told me she was having a friend at the bike shop do it under the table for a case of beer, that he hadn't gotten it shipped, and she'd pick it up herself from the shop and have it picked up by fedex.  She gave me a tracking number that was orginated, but then 7 days later, the package had not been picked up.  Now, she won't answer ANY of our attempts to reach her.

I am just sick and heartbroken about this. We really wanted to be kind and do a good thing for another BT'r. We felt for her situation and tried to help her out, thinking I'd get a bike in the process.  Now we have to play hardball.  If she couldn't get it together to get the bike shipped, then she should have returned our money, or had a friend take care of it for her.  I worked extra to earn the money for this bike...and I do feel as if I've been scammed....like it was nothing to her to take our money because she was desperate. I have a family too.  It's not nothing to us.  I'm just sad.

I feel your pain...I bought a mountain bike from a guy in MN that had it listed on Ebay and paypaled him on Tuesday. The bike was supposed to have shipped today, and the Ebay auction for the bike was supposed to be canceled when the paypal went through. The auction is still going, and I was told "no worries, man" in an email, but I haven't heard back why the auction is still up, or why I don't have a tracking number. I am starting to get angry about the $1500.00 I sent!!

I think you should post the name of the BT'er so we can all take caution. I for one, have no idea who you are dealing with.

Some of us don't have many posts because we are just getting started with this part of the BT website. I hope to become a regular participant.

The person you are dealing with just has a serious character flaw. I sure hope you can recover your money and I am very sorry that you have to go through so much trouble. Keep your chin up.

This is a terrible turn of events.  If the situation does finally end with you definitely not receiving the bike or your money back, please name, or at least her avatar name, the culprit so that nobody else gets scammed.  This person may simply be on this site to prey on unsuspecting types like you and me and most BT dwellers.

Not finding her.  Double check the name and report back.

FWIW, I was scammed by a guy on Slowtwitch quite a while back.  You never know who you're dealing with unless they have a solid reputation.

The only way we can keep BT clean is to police it ourselves and "out" those who are of questionable character.

Good luck.

Um...did someone e-mail you and say "you're the high bid, I'll sell you the item at your current bid price and we can stop the auction"...because that happened to me once and it was a scam. I e-mailed the seller listed on ebay and said "are you serious about your offer?" and he basically asked what the heck I was talking about and told me someone else must have been trying to scam me. You might want to make sure that didn't just happen to you!

Need names, pictures, address, and even GPS coordinates so we can do a night insertion recover the money as well as the bike followed by a quiet extraction, of course after we slap them upside the head.

Sorry to hear you got screwed by someone that you thought you could trust, I hope you recover something. I got screwed several time at EBAY and it left a terrible taste in my mouth. If I can't see it, I won't buy it anymore and it's a shame we have to resort to that.  Good Luck.

Mel,

I am told that if you file with Paypal they will send collections people after the nasty person that tried to screw you. One of my best friends went through this recently after an Ebay deal went bad.
I hope this gets resolved in your favor. PM me if you have questions.

I believe my deal is going to end up just fine. I saw the Ebay auction for my bike was closed, and I talked to the seller today. He is an anesthesiologist, and apparently has been stuck at the hospital, and that's why I hadn't heard back about my purchase. I am expecting a tracking number on Monday.
