jashac - 2009-12-15 12:22 PM I cannot believe how much strength and muscle mass I lost while training for the IM in 08.

If at all possible, don't give up your strength training while training for the IM.

Be like me and go to CrossFit.

Now all my jeans are to tight in my thighs and many of my shirts are to tight in my upper arms...I'm adding muscle I can tell.

VolsFan - 2009-12-14 11:26 AM Ok...after many rides this week on my trainer, I decided to go w/ the Selle SMP saddle.  I'm taking the Cobb V-Flow Plus back.  Demo'd many saddles and the Selle worked best for me.  Now I just have to get ready for the long miles ahead next year!!

Which model did you get?

I have the Glider and rode the Pro in '08. Glider fits my bum better though.

Kathy, I went w/ the Extra.  It was priced to my liking and my boney butt appreciates a bit of padding...

Hi All.  I have a quick question for those who have done a lot of trainer riding.  i went downstairs tonight to ride my trainer and discovered that my tire was flat.  like completely no air left flat.  (the wheel that is on the trainer).  i can't for the life of me figure out how I could have got a flat from the trainer.  Is there anything I need to know before changing the flat?  I don't want to change it and just get another one in a couple of weeks.  I last rode on it on Tuesday for about 1:35.  Do I really need to get a trainer tire?  would this make a difference with flats?  I hate change rear tire flats!!!

Thanks

My experience with the trainer (and living in upstate NY I have plenty) is that the trainer tire helps slow down the wear and keeps the tire dust down, but doesn't help with flats.  My trainer has been pretty easy on tires so I just use old road tires.  The flats I have had on the trainer generally are due to either something being in the tire that I don't see that gets pushed deeper into the tube by the trainer, or more likely when I air up the tire I mess up the presta valve and it leaks off.

Good luck!!!

Buy a trainer tire and you can use it for years. (probikekit.com has them cheap)  I used to use old road tires but found they would slip then I started buying cheap road tires for winter but after doing that a couple years I figured out trainer tire is cheaper after a year.

I know some folks undo the tension on their tire after their rides and tighten it up after their ride. I don't and haven't ever had a flat on the trainer.

Today I'm doing testing to set my power zones..2x20' with 2' easy pedal in middle. Doing testing outside is so different inside it is like time moves backwards...mentally they are tough to keep pushing.

Did my first trainer ride ever today, found it's pretty easy not to get too incredibly bored as long as I have Hulu running on my laptop.

Congrats..first of many?

I found when I work hard on the bike I need to focus 100% on what I'm doing. When I do zone 1 or zone 2 work I can watch TV or listen to music.

It wasn't until I bought a power meter I realized how easy I was riding on the trainer. Over the last 4 winters I have trained with power meter I realize what hard work is on the trainer.

My road bike has been on the trainer since 2 weeks ago and that beast is not coming off till April haha. I'm a wuss when it comes to cold weather!

I've been crushing some solid intervals though and I've just picked up a Netflix membership so I'm ready for the winter riding :-)

Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread

Hi guys thought I'd repost this on BT - it's a shortened version of something I sent to local Virgin Island Riders - several of us are in training for a 3 day cycle tour during early February.

.....managed to bike 108 miles yesterday - my first century (six lengths of the island of Tortola BVI - Sopers Hole, West End to Trellis Bay, East End) - I'm based on St Thomas USVI and went to Tortola to get some mostly flat miles under my belt - turns out this will be a great training location for IMFL.

I really didn’t prepare properly for this ride – treated it like a normal long Sunday ride, I should have put a bit more thought into it – for example….. I usually use my phone for speed and distance, but realized that this could cost a kings ransom @ roaming rates – so tried to tried to use my wireless bike computer which would not connect – so didn’t have any real idea on distance. Also I have new pedals and shoes and couldn't seem to get the cleat position correct on the right foot, don’t seem to have the same amount of “float” as the left, so I had to stop a few times to tweak…

I had a boat in Sopers Hole Marina at the west end of the island so was able to refuel in 33 mile increments, 1st turnaround went OK, but I started to feel the sun during the second lap (I'd started at 4.20 am), I ran out of fluids about 20 minutes from the end of my second lap and by the time I reached the boat to refuel, I reaslized that I’d messed up badly on nutrition – my hands were actually shaking when I got to the boat……. I devoured, A bagel with cream cheese, 20oz Gatorade, 2 cans of coke zero, 2 kit-kats, a banana and some squerms – all in about 2 minutes….. bystanders best keep their hands clear……….

For the last lap, felt much better after eating something – no issues as a result of the poor mix of foods, but realized I was drinking a lot – probably due to the full stomach soaking up so much of what I was drinking.

My lower back started to get stiff and my butt was certainly aware of time in the saddle, I had liberally applied bodyglide before the ride – but have realized that you need to keep applying until you reach your shoulder blades ;o) – also was starting to get some nipple chafe – used to this with running but a first for biking!

Total miles charted on Google Earth – 108, time a little less than 7 hrs. So pretty happy. Roads were generally quiet – but overtaking on blind turns appears to be the BVI national sport….. Next time, I will carb load properly the evening before and make sure that I have more than an energy bar before I start in the morning. Also I didn’t need to use a washroom for the entire 7 hrs – this probably means that I was dehydrated, so I would plan to drink much more in the early miles (as I was probably drinking double the amount in the second and third laps).

Feel good today, not sore, was slow out of bed this morning, but other than that all good,

I've learned a few lessons &  definitley plan it better for next time, but its great to have my first century behind me )

Glen

Planning to repeat this ride on Jan 3rd and 17th

Congratulations on your first century.  By the way that extra 8 miles really counts.

You're doing great!  I didn't get my first century till the middle of the summer before my first IMFL.

Definitely first of many. I'm sure the trainer will come in very handy when school is in session and I have to fit in workouts between projects/meeting/assignments and whatnot. Now I'm not limited by weather or time of day. (however seeing you biking in the blizzard makes me feel a little inadequate )

Nice job Glen!!

You'll learn a lot by doing longer rides as to nutrition and hydration. Not having to urinate for 7 hours on the bike does likely mean you under did your hydration. Keep a log of it ideally here on BT as you will learn by doing and even keep a note of weather conditions as temps and sun/clouds can make a pretty big difference.

We have snow on the ground so 108 mile rides aren't really feasible for me right now. I do ride outside with my cyclocross bike and studded tires for play but do my work on the bike on my computrainer working on increasing my FTP...my watts I can hold for 60'.

I did IMFL in 07 and IMKY in 08.  KY is a good race and I am glad I did it once, but do not plan to go back in the foreseeable future. On the otherhand, I chose to do FL again in 2010.  The course are very different.  As for IMKY, it is extremely well organized compared to most races; I am a fan of the scenic rolling bike course that gets you out of the saddle (compared to FL where you need to be prepared to stay aero for 95% of the bike course); I prefer the pre-football season race date. Dislikes: I am not a huge fan of Louisville is itself- nice to visit once; I believe the time-trial swim start takes away from one of the most exciting aspects of an IM; the Ohio River is warm and nasty; the distance from finish to finish area and transition sucks at the end of a long day.

As for IMFL, I like the traditional swim start; I prefer ocean swims, regardless of the jelly fish and small sharks; although unscenic, the run course is pretty nice, especially the ladies at the mile 1 or 2 aid station; the Panama City area has a little bit of everything, so it is an easy sale to the family; PC is only a five-six hour drive from home (north Georgia).  As for dislikes, I am not a fan of the race date being towards the end of football season (no trips to Athens).

This evening I did a 35 minute run on the treadmill and didn't get any twinges from my hip, hamstring or glutes. I am so made up over this that I just wanted to share with someone, so who better than you guys!

For the past couple of months I've been having problems running, well walking after running to be correct. Pain in my right hip and hamstring and trouble walking the following day. I took a month or so off running and with the help of my physio, a change of running shoes and lots of strength exercises and stretching, I have started running again with ever improving results. I feel that I have now turned the corner, which is a good thing as I'm entered for IMNZ in March. I will review things in a couple of weeks before deciding if I do the race or not as I don't want to ruin the rest of my year and not be able to make IMFL. Guess this is another part of the Ironman journey, although I'd prefer not to see this bit!

Many thanks for the wetsuit input - guess I'll start to check out the options.

OK, next question - American Airlines wants rediculous amounts to fly a bike at the moment, my preliminary plan would be to box the frame and express mail, the hire I nice set of wheels, anyone gone the wheel hire route, was it worthwhile, any recommendations on who to use?

TIA

American is actually the most reasonable major airline out there.  It's only $100 each way....but coming from St. Thomas might be cosidered "international" I guess....

And I adamently will not ship or fly my bike without a plastic case.  Once you figure in a case it really doesn't tend to be much cheaper to ship it.

It's a shame you can't use Fed Ex ground.  Depending on where you live, FedEx ground might not be so bad.  I just had to ship mine from FL to MS and FedEx ground only took one day (it was less than 300 miles) and it was about $50.  But still check Fed Ex...I bet it will be cheaper than international flying rates.

I used Race Day Wheels for IMAZ in 08.  Worked out fabulously.  $140 for wheels, another $20 for insurance.  And they are usually on site for all the Ironmans.

Thanks for the wheels advice guys, will get something reserved in the new year.

Phatknot, would love to get some feedback on your new watch, I invariably loose count when doing laps.

Had a fairly big biking weekend, 64 miles of flats Saturday and 62 miles mostly climbing on Sunday and have another century planned for next Sunday - all in training for the tour of Puerto Rico in Feb. For the first time in living memory, I might just end up the holiday season weighing less than when it started )

Happy New Year to all,
