achen2iron - 2010-08-22 2:05 PM I drive in from the Washington/Idaho line all of Ironman week and race day and traffic/parking has never been a problem. I just took my bike into the shop to have it checked out after my accident and it sounds like they want to total it just because they cannot warranty the frame anymore. Hopefully the kid that hit me has insurance. I also need a new helmet and sunglasses.

Very wise decision, I believe. Happy Bike shopping. I bet the insurance will kick in!

Make sure they check the wheels as well.  My guess is that you were hit so hard that the Zipp stickers got knocked off.  The hard part now is remembering if they were 404's or 808's.

As a newbie, I'm in for CDA next year as well and am looking forward to getting to know the group over the next 10 months or so. I'm new to the sport this year, and have really enjoyed training on a BT Olympic plan, losing about 60 lbs to get to my goal weight, feeling much improved in all three sports, and pretty comfortable going into my first Olympic event in less than 3 weeks. After reading a book of ironman stories, as well as many race reports here, I feel like I need to try this and am looking forward to the journey. I plan to follow the Don Fink intermediate plan (first workout 11/30, the day after my 44th birthday) and do the New Orleans HIM ten weeks out. This seems like a great group, like this whole site, and I look forward to following everyone's experience.

Here's a small condo for rent -- It was too small for us. Very close to race route and expo tent:

http://www.vrbo.com/287030

Also she has  If you happen to know of anyone who wants a larger home for that week, I also have a brand new beautiful home on Government Way, less than one mile from downtown.  It is 3 BD, 2.5 baths, all pillow topped double bagged mattresses, attached two car garage...a little gem.  The rate for Iron Man is $4000. for the week.  VRBO.com listing #308423.

I also have her cell and home numbers (don't want to post publicly) PM me if you can't find them on the link.

We got a 2 bedroom condo in Riverstone, a bit off the course but 1 1 /2 miles away from start. I think I'll like being a bit away from the hubub. Plus, we're staying a full week and doing a bit of a vacation afterwards.

That's exciting the race sold out - for those of us who entered without having to pay for community fund slots, at least.

I got my wake-up call as to the enormity of the challenge ahead on Saturday when i did my first sprint in over a year (packing on 50 more pounds than the last one, too). It was long, challenging and rewarding. Wow. Good to be back!

As far as IMCDA goes, my wife just decided that she would prefer to stay in a house/cabin instead of at the Super 8 where we got killer $90 a night rates! We're now painstakingly going through every listing out there. We have a bunch of family coming, including an uncle also doing the race, so we're trying to find the perfect big house at the right price and location. That seems to be an even tougher task than losing the extra 100 pounds on my body!

There is no difference.  Hayden is North about 5 miles from Coeur d Alene.  I live in CDA and really anywhere you stay is close.  If you stay in Hayden, you are closer to getting to the northern portion of the bike loop.  You should be fine staying anywhere other than Spokane (30 miles away)

Achen2bIron - Sooooo glad to hear you are fairly okay after the wreck. Take good care of yourself, make sure you get fully checked out yourself as well as your bike and definitely contact your insurance company.

Travis - I stayed at the Resort in 2007 and if you are willing to bite the bullet on the price, you cannot beat if for convenience. It was awesome to be so close.

Welcome to all our recent additions - glad you made it in under the wire.

FWIW, I've noticed many of us have started adding others to our friends list and I think this is a great idea and a solid way to follow the group as we get into our training cycle. If you haven't already (and I know many haven't) make your logs public so people can check in and "Inspire" you throughout the process. I think many of the veterans will chime in and say how important and meaningful it was to have this virtual training community behind them as they prepared for this exciting event.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in person next summer and in the meantime my super detailed race reports from 2007 & 2008 with lots of town and course info can be found at my blog www.speedleopard.com

It looks like this is going to be a great year for me!  First baby is due December 30th, and six months later, IRONMAN!  So stoked!  Planning training around a baby is going to be quite the challenge!

We've still not found a place yet either. Wifey is hard to pin down. Here is some very solid advice early enough to benefit from it. It comes from Fleck, a grizzled old tri vet who posted it on slowtwitch.com

Solid Advice

1. Hills. You can never do too many hills on the bike or the run

2. Don't be afraid of riding long, hard and fast on the bike in training.

3. Make almost all runs build runs( negative split)

4. Race more and race shorter - everything down to a 5K running race should be on the program and helpful

6. Take a year-round approach to training. There really should not be a significant off-season. If you love doing it, it should be something you want to do year-round.

7. Do single sport focus blocks for weeks/months where you focus almost completely on that one sport.

8. Learn to eat/hydrate well on the fly. This really is the fourth event in 1/2 and full IM racing.

9. Find a good group to train with. Ideally people that are better than you that will push you.

10. Don't over think it.

Not sure if anybody watched it but 2010 Ironman Coeur d'Alene was on Universal Sports tonight. Its something else reliving the best day of my triathlon life 2 months later. Coeur d'Alene 2011 is going to be such a treat!

To the first timers, soak up each and every detail of your experience. Embrace the tough days of training and know that when you are running down Sherman Ave with what seems like wings on your feet, it will be more worth it than you could ever imagine.

On my DVR Universal Sports has it billed as Ironman St. George... don't let that fool you when searching for the show... they are showing CdA mostly right now.

Thanks for the reminder of "soaking it all in." I've already had the dream, just last night, that the swim was starting and I didn't have my cap or my goggles. I was desperately searching for someone who had spares to borrow and a generous soul helped me. I certainly hope I'm not in for months and months of these type of dreams!
