ChrisM - 2012-08-01 2:37 AMHey guys, checking in. Last two days have been light. Did some diving yesterday, swam 3 miles this morning then spent the day on a neighboring island of lanai. Yeah, tomorrow is Haleakala. A little nervous about it but will just do the best I can. With today's 3 miler I've swum over 67,000 yards this month. Highest month by probably 25,000 yards. Wish me luck tomorrow.

Only 3 miles, Chris? We should all have such light days.

Good luck today - you will have no problems. Cannot wait to read all about it.

Today is a re-boot for me, time to get back into race shape. First cross race is in 3 weeks.

diet will be put back on track and consistent training on the bike will come back to be normal.  I will start setting up the trainer and fix a couple of broken bikes that i have been neglecting.

This AM i weighed 218lbs, that is about 10lbs off race weight and 15 lbs that i wanna lose by September. The first 5-8 will be easy, as i just need to stop eating crap, everything else will be work.

Hope everyone is doing well!!

Tom, sounds like a busy day!

For me - did an AM swim with the group this morning.  Good set - lots of pull with paddles which my abs and back are feeling now.   A bunch of work and some wrangling it appears with a little hotel in my hometown where I thought i had a reservation but it appears I don't for this weekend (my sister's wedding)

Planning on a PM run - probably just over an hour steady. The plan has some intervals but I haven't really been doing any speedwork and don't think it wise to introduce it now.

Kind of a lazy day for me.  1800 meters in the pool this morning, watching the Olympic TTs and thinking of having a nap after lunch.

Oh and last night I registered for a post-IM race.  A 25k trail run at the end of September. Will run with my running buddy - no real goals for this other than a fun day out.  The reviews suggest this is not a terribly technical race so that's good.

Looking forward to see how the ride goes! I'm debating slogging behind my brother up it in December!

My July was the most successful month of the year so far. I was actually able to get some consistency in, which is nice for a change.

Bike:11h 41m 54s  - 320.6 KM
Run:8h 06m 50s  - 78.1 KM
Swim:4h 55m  - 15700 M

Nothing super long but working at a higher intensity than normal has been interesting. Missing my 500m fin kick in swim workouts! Haha.

Planning on getting to the pool today. SCY for me today! Yay American pools! Haha. Will be back to LCM next week.

Self-enforced rest day. Three very crazy (and I mean Hangover-movie style crazy, which is not far off normal for Bali, this is why I try not to leave my house too often) days in a row, not much sleep due to Olympics addiction while maintaining training = need to sleep and do nothing today, maybe some light yoga. Osteoarthritis tends to bother me more when I'm not feeling well anyway.

Hope Chris has a great time on Haleakala!

Had a great MTB ride - they were nice and didn't drop me, even with a former pro in the mix. I slowed them down, so it got dark before we got off the trail. Ran over a rattle snake and mildly panicked. We had one light between 5 of us, and i made that person walk the 1/2 mile or so to the paved road with me.

I've got a long way to go to feel confident for that Xterra!

Today is my long run. 1:15 - will get it done in the heat after work because I had to drive the bf around this morning. I might go get lost on some trails again.

Planning on biking to work tomorrow - it'll double the distance I need for the day, but it's not stressful when broken up into two sections 8 hours apart.

Good Morning!
Swim workout for the day completed. Run later this afternoon. Enjoying the last few days of summer before school starts up again.

I would highly recommend Shane as a coach. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message.

4 hour ride for me in the books.

Still on the road bike as the ongoing saga about my tri bike has not resolved yet.

Missed an important KOM by 6 seconds. Drat!

325w for almost 10 mins!  Nice ride!  How long have you been without your tri bike?  That must have been before I joined the group?

Self-enforced rest day.

I've been doing quite a bit of this the last week and a half.  Sometimes I find it harder to avoid being active than anything else.  Swimming is a good way to blow off steam but it hasn't fit into my schedule at all this week.

So do you care about your USAT ranking?

I usually do, but won't get a ranking this year as not enough races.

I made All American the last 3 years and was proud of that. Always wanted to be in the top 100 in the M40-44 AG, but I think only came like 127ish or so.

You care?

I usually check it out a few times a year just to see what kind of score I got, but I don't set it as a goal.  Just found out my HIM got a score over 85...so I guess that's kind of cool.

I suppose if I had a chance to get AA honors, or honorable mention, I would care more about it.  Or if you could sort the listing by state and AG, you could see how you rank among the local athletes in your area.

ETA: Fred, did you catch how I said I didn't really cared but then posted a score?

What do you guys and gals carry with you on the bike for long distance racing with respect to repairs?

I have a Bontrager speed bottle that is awful for drinking out of so I use it as storage instead.  For IMMT I will have two tubes, one CO2 cartridge, C02 chuck and a multi-tool in the bottle and then another CO2 cartridge and the tire levers tucked under my saddle.  I will have extra tubes and CO2 in my special needs bag as well.

Anything else I should think about including?

For a HIM (and if I did an IM), I would go 2 tubes, 2 CO2, chuck, and lever.

It might be overkill, but a couple of allen wrenches (whatever size you use for your handlebars, seat post, and brakes) might not be a bad idea.  The size for your handlebars and seat post because if you used a bike case to travel, those are the things you likely took apart.  For the brakes because once I had the opportunity to use a spare wheel when I flatted, but I couldn't open my brake caliper enough for it to fit (wide rim).

ETA: I see you got that covered with your multi-tool
