Regular 5477 LHOTP | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Originally posted by switch Woah, there is some crazy fast swimming going on in here. Nice job everyone. Very motivating:) I like the idea of setting some sort of "speed" goal. Mine are in yards. < 1:20/100 < 6:00/400 (1:30) < 26:00/1600 (1:35) I had, or was dangerously close, to these this fall, but my haitus has set me back a bit. Because we've had to relocate into town while our house is being rebuilt, I've been entertaining the idea of going to Masters. I'll probably do it, but I want to get a little more endurance and feel back before going. Had my longest set for this year so far over lunch today--3350 yards. Brings me to 16350 since Jan 31. I have an update on my goals :) All of the following were done in today's swim and are off the wall, open-turns, and in yards: 2 400s--5:59 and a 5:56 300 in 4:15 (1:25/100) 100 in 1:15.99 <--hell yes I'm going to write it like that instead of 1:16 ;) I haven't done the 1600 (which will really be a 1650). Longest straight swim in 2014 was 1250 which I did @ 1:33/100, so I'm feeling confident that I'll be able to reach that goal too. I feel like something's starting to click. woo-hoo! And counting by 50s worked today, so thanks for all the counting help :) |

I
That was HS / College or as we now refer to it - back in the day. Don't hesitate, get to a masters session. I wish I could make the masters practice time. Swimming in a group / program setting is much more rewarding quality wise. I swim mostly by myself (with music like you) but when I can meet up with someone it's so much better. Then again I'd be happy to just get in the pool. I'm on crutches and can't do anything at the moment. I was told initially I have plantars fasciitis so I figured I would get to spend some quality time in the pool. With no improvement the last few days and from what I've read I think it's something else. I'm starting to think I'm laid up for awhile. Oh no! I'm sorry :( As a long-time sufferer of PF, and now some other weird lower leg (possibly achilles) issues, I really , really feel your pain. Damn. Do you have any idea what it could be?
Please let us know what the doctor says :) And, yes, I will sign up for masters. Thanks for the nudge.

Also seeing 1:15-16 on the 100's even though parts of them had more skill concentration. Ben I was reading your posts in Bcagle's swimming with highschoolers thread and it made me wonder about the "sweet spot" for swimming. Not like a cycling "sweet spot" but rather that place where you're maximizing returns for time spent in the pool. You are doing pretty high yardage. Maybe it's moot, as it doesn't seem to compromise your bike at all and your run is dialed in, but will you be trying to maintain your current yardage in season to hold on to those secs/100, or will you spend that time elsewhere? |

Well, yeah, in a dream world, that's the recipe, for sure. But...let's say you're trying to improve in three sports, you know, just for the sake of argument;) Bo, after all of the years that you've been swimming, what is the minimum volume and frequency you need to maintain your speed and endurance. 2500-4000m is a pretty big range. Does that mean you try to get one 4000m swim per week and the rest are 2500? How frequent is frequent for you? How have you found a balance between your swimming time and the time you dedicate to bike/run? Does the extra time (frequency*volume) in the pool pay off in terms of seconds overall as opposed to spending less time in the pool and more time on the bike or run? If yes, how did you figure that out? I know you do pure swim meets too, so maybe the ins and outs don't matter as much for you?

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Frequency 3-4x per week up to 5x on a big week. I am training for swimming and triathlon, not swimming for a triathlon. Most sessions are around 3k with a longer session at 4k. My biking/running are lower volume than training since my A race is ITU worlds sprint. |

Hit goal pace on all reps. Also did strong 100 at the end in 1:01high from a push. Pace set at 15.50/25 and beat the final beep by a touch. |

Yes, I'll be trying to keep up at least this yardage through the season. The days right around an event might go down to rest up & recover, but mostly it should be up. Swimming is going to be more of a priority in the events I'm looking at, more so with things I might do later in the season as some could be just swimming. I'll be looking to get faster too. Not just hold. The yardage I'm doing now doesn't really feel high anymore. More like normal. And nice going beating all those pace goals of yours! |

In the ER they said PF since X-rays were negative. Which at that point I thought fine with what little I know back in the pool after a few days and bike in a week. Figured I'd be able to ramp all that up with no running for awhile. It's been 3 days and it's only getting worse and more swollen. Even with Vicodin there's no relief and can't walk. I started a thread in TT to see what kind of warning signs people who have/had this noticed because this was totally out of the blue. Doc appt tomorrow am so hopefully that will shed some light. Holding out hope I'll be back in the pool at least shortly. Now go sign up for a masters swim. Really wishing I had something to add. Hope you get it figured out. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Wow! I think he would double-lap me. Pretty sure I could do 100m fly in under 2 minutes, but not much faster than that! I noticed even the pros were pretty much breathing every stroke, at least until the final sprint, and some of them even then! Impressive though how far out they kick after each turn.It almost looks ridiculous in a short course pool. Le Clos was taking six strokes to cross the 25-meter pool; I take 11 or 12. I'm sure I'm at least six inches, possibly up to a foot, shorter than him, but still.....wow! Back to the pool tomorrow. I'll try to post a funny pic--there actually WAS a pool at the national park, but it made the croc lake look good. It apparently was someone's resort project gone bust, and was being used as a water storage tank for gardeners--dark brown water with algae. But there were marble (no kidding) starting blocks. My students went in (not in the water, by the poolside) to observe the algae! Edited by Hot Runner 2014-03-07 4:15 AM |

Is there a limit/line when you need to come up above the water for the different strokes, or can you stay under as long as you're kicking/stroking/streamlining appropriately and it benefits your race? |

As far as I know it's 15 yds/meters. So from there it's however things work best for your race. I've heard it's to help keep kids from trying to go underwater all the time, possibly backing out. Then there is stuff like this. Usually it's nice to see the winner actually swim the stroke at some point too. |
