It is a bit of a pain but I figure trying the Ironman Perform for the first time and ending up in GI distress is not the way to go. Canada's equivalent of the FDA hasn't allowed it here get due to the amount of sodium so I haven't been able to practice using it. Who else is primarily carrying their own nutrition vs. feeding off of what the course provides? I am living off the course 99.9%. I have been going back and forth about whether I want anything "special" in my special needs bags, and just cannot think of what I would put in there, but then again, I might be begging you for some vinegar and salt potato chips around mile 13. Is it? You're not out there for very long and (especially on the run) you're at an aid station every mile with tons of stuff. If I haven't trained with it, I'm not using it on race day and everything I've trained with is on the course (and then some). I think in the context of the situation where you are hot, cold, wet, cramping, sore, tired, rashy and starving that 17hrs is quite a long time. If I was hanging out on the beach with a margarita maybe not so much.... My contingency plans A, B...C...give me solace at the moment. I've never done an IM before and I'm not used to the heat and humidity of the area. Living on the west coast all summer has not been good training for heat acclimatization.....I'm living in a paranoid world of hyponatremia and GI distress...haha I normally race with the minimum amount of everything required and live off of the course and I'm sure by IM #3 I would be totally cool living off the course, but for now I'm going to go with being prepared for all obstacles that I can dream up (which there are quite a few ) |

Way, Way too funny. I hear you relative to the preparedness, Melissa - I think everyone should do what feels right for them and don't sweat it too much. If only we still had 5 hour bikes, 3 hour runs, and 5000 yards swims, we wouldn't have time to worry about all this stuff. |

Any thoughts?? I'd say a small proportion would consider a DNS--maybe 2-3% of the field and those already on the fence about being able to finish the swim to begin with. I'm sure a lot more people would be in uproar about it, but would end up racing anyways. |

Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread TankBoy - 2011-07-19 4:40 PM I did IMKY sans wetsuit, and all things being =, I'll take the wetsuit. I don't worry about what others are doing, I can only control me, and ME likes wetsuit!! Last year water was warm and I used sleeveless suit, it was OK, but as long as it's legal, I'm going for the full monty. Member 73 Buffalo, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Holy crap I can't keep up with all the posts. I have one day away and there are like 5 new pages. Taper does crazy things to everyone's posting skills! In an attempt to catch up: T1: bike shoes, helmet, sunglasses, honey stinger waffles, arm coolers/arm warmers (depends on the temp but I will absolutely wear one or the other) Bike special needs: tube, co2 T2: socks, run shoes, visor, fuel belt Run special needs: maybe an action figure or something ridiculous to make me smile if I need it I posted my time to the spreadsheet too. I've only made my goals public to one other person but now all you folks will know I'll be shooting sub-10. I've got a range in there but definitely sub 10 hours. Wetsuits: I don't care either way really. Weather: Snow is preferable but I'll take a monsoon or death valley as close seconds. The more extreme the more fun and the better the story! |

Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I'm sitting here making my lists, planning my packing, making sure i account for most possibilities My bags: T1 - helmet, tri bike shoes, sun glassses, belt with number, chamois butt'r, sun screen, arm warmers, gel Bike SN - mini Snickers that were in the freezer all night, Fig Newtons, Chamois butt'r T2 - run shoes, socks (regular running socks and a "base layer" sock that are ankle length stockings - blister prevention), body glide, vaseline, a hat, sunscreen, a caffeinated gel, shot bloks to carry in pocket Run SN -I don't know on this one... maybe socks (again, both kinds) vaseline, long sleeve T?? I've run 3 marathons, several HM, lots of long training runs, and I've never changed my socks. It never even occurred to me until I read it here the last few days. Nothing new on race day, right? If I take off my shoes I might not want to put them back on. I also don't think I will need a long sleeve shirt. Right now the projected temps are in the 70's and I intend to finish while the sun is up. I can run in short sleeves in the 50' depending on wind and sun, definitely in the 60's. 70's should be no issue. |

Long sleeve shirts, extra socks, my favorite pillow, my grandad's bagpipes just in case i want to finally try and learn to play them at mile 13 on the run...it was getting ridiculous! I'm reverting back to keeping it simple. no extra socks, no extra shirt (unless the weather really jacks up that morning), no food treats, etc. My treat is afterwards at the LP Brewery and it comes in a 5 gallon growler. If that can't get me moving, nothing will. I did make on executive decision today. I'm going to wear my bike shorts on the bike instead of tri-shorts. my junk just can't deal for 6+ in the tri shorts I have. this goes against my nature as I love a fast T2 and hate the idea of changing, but i've just got to do it. Must keep the junk happy on the long day! |

Regular 118 Grand Rapids | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Got to Lake Placid today. I road one lap of the run course and then rode the three bears. I talked to a local who told me he just recently rode the Keene decent. He mentioned that they were applying new asphalt in places and there were loose stones everywhere. He also had to stop his bike to remove tar and rocks from his bike. Hopefully this is taken care of by Sunday. |

Not to be snarky, but why? If you don't like a wetsuit, don't wear one. I'd like a cool morning with chilly water. I enjoy swimming with my wetsuit on and would prefer if the water's not too warm. I swim better against the field without a wetsuit. There is barely any difference in my swim times when wearing a wetsuit than when not wearing a wetsuit. Most people gain a pretty significant advantage, I don't. If the swim is wetsuit illegal, I end up swimming better (relative to the field). Its not about me wearing or not wearing a wetusit. Its about everyone else.
Trying to slow me down, eh? Trying to slow down the other 30-34 females. I have a large incentive to finish within 12% of the winning time in my age group and I'll take any advantage I can get. |

I stopped twice prior to the turn onto 9N to clean tar and gravel from wheels, hopefully it will be cleaned up bt race day. The road is better than it was last month so thats good. |

Sara we are planning on having a group get together and swim Friday morning. I think some thought 8 was too early. I'd rather not wait till to late in the day being I am coming with the family and this is our vacation also. I propose a 9 am meet time and swim. Anyone up for that. |

Extreme Veteran 567 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Good luck everybody, I'll be heading up there Friday morning. I'm volunteering this year and hope to race it next year. I'll be the one wearing the volunteer shirt so say hi if you see me It has been great to watch you guys progress throughout the year up till this point. You guys got me excited about the race and I'm not even in it. I did do a loop of the bike and the run last week (Was up for vacation). I thought the roads were pretty rough (Shoulders at least, and there was construction on 86 heading back into town, alternating one lane). Are the roads actually closed during the race or do you have to stay on the shoulders? The descent into Keene I thought was pretty scary (It could have been the dense fog though since I couldn't see too far in front of me) |

Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures exceeding 24.5 degrees C /76.1 degrees F will not be eligible for awards, including World Championship slots.
