Yeah, I'm gonna call "Shennanigans" on this one.  That blood looks really fake on your face and that's make up on your legs.  I know exactly what you're doing Jeremy, ... Sandbagging.  You faked an accident and then when you blow past Rusty and myself on the Bike were gonna be psyched out.  Yeah, so I ain't buying it.  Shennanigans!!

Can't believe you even snuck into a hospital to get the pics and make it look authentic. All to try and be the top BT finisher which David Morris (03jdmorris) already has wrapped up.

I posted this in the general forums as well but I'm looking for any insight so I'll post again here.

Obviously, I'm trying to bike as many hills as I can and, luckily, living near the North Georgia mountains, I've been able to get in some good long hard climbs.  The past two weeks I've had a pain in my left knee that feels like IT band issues.  However, I've not had any problems while running.

I've not heard of IT band issues on the bike.  Anyone else experience this, it it something other than an IT band issue?  Other than rolling and such, wondering what to do.  I've had no other issues through training, I'd hate to start having issues now.

In the past, Ive had similiar issues while riding many hills.  After going to a Sports Med and recieving A.R.T. on my hip, it went away.  I stretch my hips as often as possible and use the roller as well.  The hips being tight from riding hills can cause IT band issues.  I was told to use an easier gearing and stretch the hips...Sitting farth back on the saddle may also be beneficial.  I also went with a 12-28 rear cassette to allow me to spin easier.

Best of luck...  The A.R.T really was helpful as well...

Riding the Gaps a lot will do that to you...

I agree with Scott: A.R.T. (or other types of non-branded deep tissue massage) should be able to help you out. PM me if you need recs on A.R.T. or non-ART folks in the Atlanta area - I have had good luck with both. As you know there are folks on the Georgia BT board that can give you good recommendations as well.

In the meantime, stretch and roll your hips and especially your glutes (not the area where it hurts) and ice cup the knee (where it does hurt) several times per day. My Doc would tell me six times, probably in the hope that I would do it at least 3 times...

The trick though is figuring out what is causing it. I am no doctor, but on the internet I can act like one. I know it is always a big joke on BT and ST, but your seat may actually really be too high for sustained climbing like in the Gaps. Depending on how you got fit, when you slide back on the saddle to climb it could have you just a little too high for too long. Gearing/fitness could be an issue as well, if you are getting tired you could be getting sloppy and throwing your knee out away from the top tube, which again is OK for just a little bit, but if you are doing it for 50 minutes straight up Neels Gap that is not good. It is possible that it is a combination of all these factors.

Good luck - and ice that thing where it hurts!

Ouch! That looks like it hurt. Rest and heal up fast!

I was up there this past weekend also and went screaming, well, not exactly screaming but out of my comfort zone fast down there and I can not imagine a blow out!  The shoulders were crappy and the middle of the road wasn't too much better.  I'd never been to LP before but some were saying the plows made some slight bumps that weren't there last year.  Did the loop 3x this weekend and by the 3rd time, I was much more comfortable knowing where to be aggressive vs. conservative.  Mostly the drivers were understanding but a few in our group got buzzed a number of times.  I really don't know how people blow up heading up to the Keene decent b/c for me, that's a pain in the arse to get up.   Long and slogging - I can't imagine trying to fly up it.  Course was beautiful and scenic and lulled me into a false sense of security in the middle - before I made a right onto 86 after the out and back.  All in all, a manageable course and now the trick will be how to pace it right.  I had an 11/28 and had no issues w/ any of the hills but I was uber conservative and too pokey for race day. Gotta figure that one out.

Kristin - looks like a great weekend to me - I don't think there is such a thing as "too pokey" on the bike in IM. Of all the race reports I have read on lake Placid, I have never seen one that said "Boy, if only I had gone harder on the bike!" Hitting that run with the freshest legs possible is what it is all about. You know you will be a bit faster around on race day: tapered, lots of other racers, off the shoulder, etc. To me it sounds like you have your pacing down pat.

asock325 - 2012-06-11 10:45 AM May have been asked before as well; but is the gel on course regular GU or GU Roctane? I've been using Roctane and it has not been settling well.

the event's website states both regular GU and Roctane GU will be available on both the bike and run courses.

my question for those in the know:  does there happen to be a water station at the swim exit before going out for the 2nd lap?

No - it is actually a pretty short run back into the water for loop 2. Last year I actually did carry a small flask of water with me stuck in my tri suit. I downed it quickly between loops and tossed the flask. This is not really a recommendation, as in hindsight I am pretty sure I did not need it, but it is how I trained so that is what I went with.

Back from LP early.  Swam Friday night before the storm. Headed out Saturday morning got 13.1 miles into the ride headed down the Keene descent and and had a front wheel blow out at 30 mph. After a huge wreck I visited the LP ER and ended up with 9 stitches in my hand, alot of road rash and a severely brusied hip. No swimming for a week the doctor said. I as able to do 1 hr on the trainer after the crash just to keep my hip moblie. Taking today off and hopefully will be back at something tomorrow.

What was funny is the crash was not my fault a flat is a flat but at 30 mph on the front wheel there was no saving it.

A EN Camp member came by saw the police and ambulance and I heard him say "That will sure make you slow down!"

I was riding the shoulder as I was supposed to be and had on Specialized Armadillo tires and still flated the roads are bad. Its to bad this happened by "God works all things for Good."

If you are riding in LP the police are starting to ticket people if they are riding 2 and 3 abreast or in the middle of the rode. Triathletes are going us a bad name up there because they come in and think they rule the roads.

Good luck training

Jer, I was talking to a friend of mine tonight...he was the first one on scene of your crash! Small world man...heal quickly!

Omg!!! When we had the seminar people mentioned about somebody blowing a tire! I'm glad your ok! Good thing you end up on the side road and not over the railing cause those things are very low and easy to go over! Some riders are giving others a bad reputation riding in 2-3-4 rows. One driver threw coins at me while I was far right in the flat section and it hit me in the helmet. Some drivers pointed their finger pointed at the other bikers like a gun. I find some trucks don't even slow down but speed up when they're beside me and my front wheel would wobble. I hope your recovering well. Too bad we didn't get to meet!
Holy crap! U said coins! My friend had coins thrown at him by an suv twice and he called to report it. To make a long story short he had several calls back and forth from the NY police.they found the vehicle.the mother was driving and the 2 kids in the back were throwing coins at bike riders.they were 7 and 15! The mother said she knew nothing about it and was ticketed.anyhow she felt horrible and is making her kids write an apology to my friend.I will keep ya posted if he gets a letter.crazy!

seadocha - yes it was an SUV but I could not tell it they were kids in there!  It wasnt just 1 or 2 coins but a handful!  Would love to see that apology letter!

Jayson - even when all other course factors are the same (wind, temp, etc.) there are several other factors that can jack your HR: travel the day before, adrenaline from just being out on the course for the first time, and lack of familiarity with the course, and lack of solid/normal sleep the night before. I don't know what you did the day before your first loop but (at least for me) having a day completely off the day before can leave you a little flat. If you combine that with the other factors, then it sounds like you had a pretty normal day to me.

I just took a peak at my files from last year for example. The morning after I arrived in LP I rode out easy and did the Keene descent. For the climb out of town my power was 185 watts and HR average was 165. Two days later on race day I rode the same effort and for the same portion of the course my power was 185 and my HR was 153.

Rusty- thanks for looking into your old files.  The adrenaline could have played a huge role with my hr cause I was very cautious with the climb and the decent as some of them have a turn of unknown steepness.  Also, I emailed the coach from EN and he said that I could have been fatigue the 2nd day that suppresses my hr and also knowning the course well enough that the adrenaline is lower than the day before.

Tdotnew2tri - 2012-06-08 9:02 PM Hey guys here's ny.little report as my eyes are getting heavier. Weather was 42f this morning when we left at 7:30. No wind until I climbed to Wilmington. I was in the first wave and the people in my wave are wayyyy faster than my pace lol. My first time here so my first impression is It's beautiful out here!!!! If you haven't been here I recommend driving the course before hand esp the descent part cause that's where the pretty stuff is mostly. When u ride it u won't have the time to see the river or lake on your right or even the mini falls coming out of the mountain. Coming out of town there is a climb but to me It's not a false flat! I saw the uphill coming and felt it. The roads kinda shittyw cause of the cracks and loose sands. The descent is a bit crazy with crosswind (2nd loop) youd think that you'll be covered cause the mountains on both sides but really It's a wind tunnel!! I squeezed that brake hard and i was still going at 35-40mph. I got carbon wheels so ly braking is a bit weak. Don't let this scare you the second loop was much more comfortable!!! The flat section I was going at 22ish mph and you'll see your ave climb. Right after out and back I think the toughest hills are the ones leading to Wilmington !!!! Long and very little rest in between. I was on my last ring and I could never stay in zone 2! For finkster peeps how do u guys climb? So u try to stay in zone two? Or try as much as possible to stay close in zone 2? When i tried to stay in zone 2 I climbed at 6mph lol. The first loop it took me 4hrs and second loop it took me 3.5hrs. It was much more head wind and crosswind in lap two and the roads were a bit wet from the rain earlier while I was out somewhere. Major BC what time did you ride out today? I tried to find you but I just can't make out from your picture on how you look like. U probably saw me just didn't know. I'll be leaving @ 730 again tomorrow. Would love to meet.some of you.

Thanks for the update,  I don't know what I'm going to for my zones.  I have been going by RPE instead of zones but I finally found some hills yesterday and I can say now I'm really guessing my cassette.  I thought I could stay with what I have but I think I might be changing it.  I ran out of gears on the hills that I was finding so I can only imagine what is going to happen to me in LP.  I did a ride last year and you are right about the decent I was on the breaks the whole time and I was doing 35-40 (My hands were hurting by the end because I was gripping so hard).  I don't seem to remember the climb into Wilmington though by the time I was done with my one loop I could barely walk and only avg about 15mph for the loop.  I will be finding all the hills I can in the mean time.

Depends if your a strong rider or not you may need to change your cassette. I had a 11-28 and it was a little challenging for me. We all had a good laugh when one guy showed up with a 11-23 lol and high peaks cycle sold at least 10new cassettes Hahaha. As for the downhill I need a newbrake x_x

I'm currently using a 11-28 as well,  what did you end up going too?

I didnt upgrade my cassette but the guy with 11-23 sure did! haaha

Guys I've been missing some of the shorter work outs with intervals in it during the week cause "I'm listening to my body" and rest instead. This weekend I pulled a 3km swim 278k bike ridw and 36km run Fri to Sunday alone. And the weeks previous have been some long mileage too! Hopefully these short/interval stuff isn't gonna bite me in the arse during the race day? Thanks!

Tdot, Ive been struggling too with the weekday workouts and they are not to the Fink plan and havent been for a month or so.  Im just trying to get out there during the week and swim, ride or run for an hour or two and saving my deep energy for the long stuff on the weekends.  Im fairly certain were close to burning out (or peaking).  Im hoping to hang on for a few more weeks until taper.  Ive got an Oly weekend after next so that will be sort of a break and then two more long weekends and then.....  taper.

Sorry I missed you in LP.  I left Saturday night after doing a loop and running the course for 16 miles.  I left the 10 miles of flat, River Rd out on the second loop so I got the hills twice - just like on race day.  What a great weekend it was.

Unless you are going for a Kona spot, you can drop almost all your mid-week intervals.

I had to double check to see what I had and it looks like I have a 11-26,  So I'll be going to the 11-28 this weekend,  I'm hoping that the hills that I found are worse than the ones in LP so than it will be a piece of cake when i actually to do it for real in LP.

Thought I'd share a cool pic of me finishing with my daughter and son at Rev3 Quassy.  For me, it's Official -  REV3 puts on a better race than WTC Ironman.  Years ago you were allowed at Ironman-branded events to run across the finish line with a family member - but not anymore.  It was a real thrill for me and my kids to run the last 50 yards with me.  Good times

That's awesome! I heard of this with WTC... and if the rumor of why is true, people complaining about their finishing photo, then that is not a good reason.

Did you happen to see my brother Mike, Cusetri, at Quassy?

asock325 - 2012-06-11 10:45 AM May have been asked before as well; but is the gel on course regular GU or GU Roctane? I've been using Roctane and it has not been settling well.

the event's website states both regular GU and Roctane GU will be available on both the bike and run courses.

my question for those in the know:  does there happen to be a water station at the swim exit before going out for the 2nd lap?

No - it is actually a pretty short run back into the water for loop 2. Last year I actually did carry a small flask of water with me stuck in my tri suit. I downed it quickly between loops and tossed the flask. This is not really a recommendation, as in hindsight I am pretty sure I did not need it, but it is how I trained so that is what I went with.

I think I want to down a gel when I run on the beach before the second loop. What do I do with the wrapper? Do I have to keep it and toss it later? I'm also wandering where I can keep the gel if I have my wet suit on. I think I can tuck it in my sleeve. I guess I'll have to practice that. It sounds like you didn't wear a wetsuit last year. Where did you keep this flask at (in your shirt I assume?)

I didnt upgrade my cassette but the guy with 11-23 sure did! haaha

I had to double check to see what I had and it looks like I have a 11-26,  So I'll be going to the 11-28 this weekend,  I'm hoping that the hills that I found are worse than the ones in LP so than it will be a piece of cake when i actually to do it for real in LP.

I am bringing both my 11/28 and 12/32 this weekend to LP camp. Odds are I will go with the 12/32 since I will probably NEVER see my 11 during this race... and if I do I should probably have my legs cut off for being stupid....

Good times

Great picture!!! Love it

Jeff,

Please tell your buddy thanks from me I am very grateful to all who stopped to help me out in my time of need.

On a good note feeling much better today and my pity party is over I have gotten some great advice from dream Chaser and Bryan Dunn and I am ready to move forward SLOWLY!!

I am so very greatful for the inspires and PMs I have gotten you are all great people and I can't wait to meet you all in LP where we are all going to rock the course!!

Wow! Jeremy, I'm so glad you are not seriously hurt. Looks like you were lucky as that could have been much more serious!! Rest up-heal up! You have serious fitness already, so don't ruin it by coming back too fast.

And, congratulations Jeff! Great race dominating the 30-34 AG and making the podium with the Clydes'. I think they should have given you double awards, personally...

Stay strong, people. This is where the rubber meets the road in training.

(and in Jeremy's case, some body parts---ouch!!)
