Subject: RE: swbkrun mentor group 6 years running closedAWESOME SAM!!! Way to podium! You never cease to amaze me!! Last week I FINALLY did what I've hemmed and hawed about for about 2 years, and that is to put a compact double crankset on my tri bike. I had a double before (I think it was a 53-39) but I always, always die on hills. I rode a lot this spring with roadie friends and just kept choking on hills. They finally talked me into the 50-34. (Other triathletes I had talked to about this [mostly young, strong 20- and 30-somethings] always talked me out of it. No more.) Got it installed on Friday, took it out today... Wow! What a difference!! I noticed I spent a lot more time in my big ring, which is a different mindset for me. But the coolest part was when I took the bike on a few familiar hills, I was able to stay aero the whole time, and I was also able to MANAGE MY EFFORT! I always would just go to my smallest gear and "manage" my effort by huffing and puffing, going out of aero, standing, and just grinding it out. Today I could, finally, spin up a hill, and then get stronger at the top as the hill tapered off, rather than just be dying and ready for a rest and a coast. Not sure how/if this will affect my bike times, but it certainly won't hurt. And if nothing else, it saves me a little bit of leg juice for running. Super excited!! (And the LBS cleaned my chain too -- woot!!!) |
