mogulbumm - 2011-07-21 6:40 PMVERY hot here today, but looking great for Sunday. Picked up my wheels as planned from Racedaywheels and had the shop next door mount my new Specialized Mondo Open Tubulars and Latex tubes. POP - the hack in the shop pinch flatted my first tube.

Somebody more experienced mounted it with the spare I brought.

After some family time, wife agreed to be my sag wagon while I rode parts of the course. Got about a mile into the Keene descent and POP goes my back tire. Rather than mess with another spare and my CO2 my sag wagon was only a couple of miles ahead and swung around for me. Drove the rest of the loop and back to the bike shop. They found a small gash in my sidewall so tire is not usable.

I've ridden crappy roads for a LOT of training miles without a single flat, so tomorrow morning I'm swapping my race tires back to the Conti 4000s that came with the wheels. Oh well. Just dropped $55 very quickly in tubes and labor.

in any case, for those of you on thinner tires I would seriously reconsider with the roads and scattered gravel. Also was very surprised how much the wind was whipping my bike around with the Zipps. I consider myself a strong (not to read fast) rider and I couldn't hold aero safely down the descent. Be safe out there! Glad I found out the tire issue BEFORE Sunday! Anybody have any issues with the Conti 4000?

I rented zipps from rdw too. I got 808s and could not believe how much the wind was pushing me around today. And i weigh 215. Hopefully Sunday is calmer! Also I use conti 4000s as my regular tire and find them sturdy and strong. Probably a good compromise for these roads.I won't make the 9a swim so I'll just say good luck to all here!

Hello! I'm here as well! Had a nice run along mirror lake this afternoon.

The swim map was on page 96 of this thread. There is an X on the map at the corner of the tennis courts - But the tennis courts are now one big black pavement lot FYI. See you tomorrow at 9!

Thanks for posting the page #. I will be there at 9 or a few minutes before. I plan on riding Keene a couple times n the morning to get used to it. My wife is going to drive me back to the top. Hehe

Hi Everyone.  I rode up to the start of the Keene descent today and throughout the 7-mile ride is tons of asphalt kernels!!  They were popping up in the air like popcorn, getting stuck in my P2 wheel cutout.  I think because it was so hot today, that was a culprit.  Just be prepared for this on race day.  It's NOT a big deal.  I'm going to back my wheel a few centimeters away from the cutout.  If we have a cool day the asphalt may not heat up as much and this may not happen.

Yeah, I drove or road most the course yesterday and it definitely looks like they recently put some patches down on the roads.  Hopefully it will help, can I definitely had some of the "popcorn" as well.  I'm not sure if it was the heat or just the new pavement.  Hopefully it will get better as cars continue to ride on it.

I agree the swim does look pretty long when you're looking at it from the beach, but I swam it yesterday with my Garmin under my swim cap and it was spot on, which shouldn't be much of a surprise.  I love "the line" they have in there.  Its great to be able to swim and now you're doing the course before hand.

I'm here with sketchy wifi and no air conditioning. Rode the climb out of Placid and had the popcorn and the wind issues mentiond. Ran the ski jump hill this morning and am sipping coffee outside our cabin at Schulte's. Will be at the lake for the 9:00 meetup.

Looking forward to checking out the swim this morning. I need to drag my daughter out of bed though........ Hopefully a short ride out of town today also to generally just check the bike out. Beautiful morning here in LP so far (i.e. - heat hasn't hit yet.)

Won't be at the swim meet up have an angry rear derailer issue that I can't seem to sort out myself and am paranoid and taking it to see a mechanic to look at earlier rather than later..... Probably nothing serious...I'm just a bit mechanically incompetent! Haha. Have a good swim everyone! I'll hit the lake up a bit later...and probably ride the Keene descent given my rear deailer issue is sorted!

Bring arm warmers. It's going to be cold. I'm a weather freak.

The weather confuses me....it just changed again for Sun! Haha. Crazy! I could handle a high of 23C though! just like back home! Yesterday it was saying an 80% chance of rain and cloudy....now it is Sunny....

Just got out of the swim - it was really FANTASTIC to say hello to everyone this morning and finally put real names and faces to folks. Now standing in line for check in, then grabbing the bike from tri bike transport and hitting the decent per Fred, then catching up on what I hope is an epic day in the tour - NO SPOILERS! Good luck everyone!

x2. And none of you look anything like your avatars, except for Kate (sans legwarmers).

Got the Conti 4000s back on the bike and felt MUCH more comfortable on the roads...felt like they could take a bit more abuse. Road the bears and they were much less intimidating than I expected, though I'm sure I'll be dropping f-bombs there on lap2.If you see my dragging on the run, feel free to kick it and remind me why we do this crazy thing called Ironman.

Good luck to all of you and I'll see you out there! My kids are "tapering" at the playground before their race lol...

There's a "mandatory" athlete briefing Friday at 7:30. I've generally found these things to be useless. Is it a big deal if I bag this thing? Will I miss anything important? If I do bag it and one of you guys attend, would you mind posting anything relevant on this thread?

Thanks,

Ralph

Great tour day today. Wow!!

NO SPOILERS! We are only just now starting to watch today's stage!

Thanks for the advice to ride the Keene descent, Fred - that was a very good thing to do. I thought the road (shoulder, actually) from town up to the top was pretty rough, but the descent was nice a clean and pretty smooth for the most part. One slightly rough patch in the flat spot by the lakes, but that was it. 50+ was fairly easy in the aero bars as the descent is relatively strait, cross winds made the 808 front get a little skittish when it opened up around the lake and at the turn at the bottom at that speed though. Will be taking it easy on Sunday with other bikes around! Being able to ride to the left of the white line will help us all quite a bit!

Breaking News:At the athlete briefing the Swim director just said the temp of the lake may be above 76.1. If so you can still wear a wetsuit but you will not be able to qualify for Kona slots or Age Group awards.

Nothing important from briefing other than the aforementioned water temps.Personally I'm still wearing my wetsuit regardless.
