I'm going to Agree to Disagree with you guys.  Coggan is just one study, and I've seen studies that prove Smoking Cigarettes Improves Lung Function.  Studies aren't Gospel.

Brian Sell qualified for the Olympic Marathon at the trials after he peaked at 140 miles for the week.  All volume that included almost no intervals.

Understood.  Just as studies are not gospel, neither is one piece of anecdotal evidence, as I can point to references indicating that high intensity training of shorter workbouts resulted in better performance of certain athletes.  We also need to decide whether to qualify our positions based on results obtained by elite athletes or not - as everyone knows they are in a whole other league of conditioning than us AGers

Dream Chaser - 2012-06-15 8:53 AM

When you run volume the body makes physiological changes that cannot be accomplished any other way.  When you reach certain critical volume levels the body naturally becomes more efficient with technique and metabolic processes that both translate into speed on Race Day.

I agree with some of that.  Structurally, the strengthening of connective tissue, increase in bone density - this is absolutely true.  However, when you talk about improvements in things like capillarization and mitochonrial creation, higher intensity work-bouts can improve those factors more than LSD work-bouts can - simply because the higher intensity demands more from those systems, so your body adjusts to meet those demands.

Dream Chaser - 2012-06-15 8:53 AM

To be clear we're not talking Lactate Threshold; we're talking Intervals and High Intensity.

I do think this is probably the crux of the issue.  When you say interval, you are talking anaerobic - when I say interval, I am talking typically of workbouts ranging from 3-20 minutes, which are minimally anaerobic (if at all) and still mostly aerobic, just heavily stressing the aerobic components (ie, threshold).  And I may be guilty of using incorrect terminology - when I have said 'higher intensity' in previous posts, I mean higher intensity than conversational Z2 stuff, whereas you may have been thinking I meant anaerobic intensity.

So in the end, I think that we are mostly in agreement - except that our respective definitions may differ somewhat.   Deal?

During interval work my HR never drops down from Zone 4 to Zone 2, unless I bonk.

In the Fink plan during the BUILD period for the "Competitive Program" he has Z4 as a total of 8% of all Running and Cycling volume.  So 92% of the training is non-Z4 for the BUILD.  And for the "Competitive Program" Peak Period his Z4 total is 7% for running and cycling.

To be clear we're not talking Lactate Threshold; we're talking Intervals and High Intensity.

Ok, the above statements have left me confused because it doesn't seem like were talking about the same thing. What do you mean by Zone 4?

I'm totally pissed. Just found out there isn't one Mother F**king McDonalds on the bike course. Tomorrow is going to be a long ride.

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads.

I went back and more-carefully read your and rmillers posts, and for whatever reason I didn't see the word 'threshold'.  I just focsued on the words 'VO2Max' and 'interval'.  By Zone 4 I am referring to maximal all-out 'high-intensity' effort.  Everything I've posted was bearing this in mind.

As far as 'Lactate Threshold' work, which is not neccesarily Zone 4 (which is Zone 3 or upper Zone 2, from my experience) that's an entirely other issue.  Lactate Threshold, from my experience and from the literature I've read, is safer and more beneficial for increasing aerobic fitness.

Today I did a 103 mile out and back ride and came within 20 seconds of a negative split. Quite pleased with the pacing because I was feeling the hills in my legs today.I followed with a 51 minute brick run. Slow but steady with temps teaching mid 80s.When I got home, I found an empty house and a hand decorated envelope. My lovely wife and ever energetic children had left instructions and money for a full body massage appointment.I've never had one. It felt awesome and painful at once.

At the top click 'Edit" then 'Find" and type in "Pro".  And keep hitting the arrow key.  It will show you all the Pro's.  I only recognized Andy Potts, Maik Tweksiek, Katya Meyers and Hillary Biscay.  Looks like ben Hoffman who has been there the last few years will not be there.

Numerical order, that has to be good luck, right?

Finished 103 miles riding, 15 miles of running this weekend and finally felt relatively good! And finally no lower GI issues on my run, thank goodness! Switched away from Gu Roctane gels (trying Clif and they are GOOD; you have to try the vanilla flavor if you haven't). Also didn't eat a boat load after my long ride yesterday even though I wanted to...but I think it saved my stomach on the run this morning. Time to eat up now!

I believe it goes alphabetical by age group. My last name is Corona. So if your last name is close to that then I'm right. Or some reason I cannot open the list on my iPhone right now.

Awww man you are in my age group what the %#@!$ ,  There goes my first place finish in my age group.  My last name is Kuder so it's a little ways away from yours.   It's all good as long as I get a number I'm happy,  that means it wasn't just a dream that I signed up.

2482 for me, I just finished a week of training at LP, new record for me, over 40 hours of training in one week. This will be my 4th IMLP and I feel more ready than I ever have. I rode 8 laps of the bike course and feel like I know every bump and rough spot out there. The MOST IMPORTANT thing was getting nutrition plan down, I have learned the hard way all the training in the world won't help you if you get dehydrated or run out of fuel during the run. This year I am keeping it simple and it worked during this week of training. My only advice to first timers is practice your nutrition and keep it simple! Good luck to all and stay safe!
