My goal for our next cruise is to fit a whole week's worth of stuff in a backpack...

Nude beach?

Happy Anniversary, Linda.

I wear Adidas shoes.  Mostly because they are the only shoes I can consistently find in a size 17.  My foot measures 15.  However, back of heel to big toe joint measures 17.  When fighting thru a bad round of PF the podiatrist explained the difference in fit.  The difference was immediately noticed.

Can I whine a little?  Does everyone have a problem where medical problems all come at once?  Delaney, 8yo, has been ill and lost her voice for a couple days (but as much as she talks I didn't complain a lot Wink).  I had Cali, 5yo, at the doctor Monday and she ended up giving urine and blood samples.  Something wrong, but nothing defined yet.  Tiller, 10yo, has an infection in a finger, yes a freaking finger, and has now almost ripped the nail off the same finger playing basketball.  And I am once again on the side line.  I have an infection in a gland in my neck.
End whine here.

i'm with ya!  sucks to hear you're guys are all sick.   i think my family is finally shaking all the crap.   size 17.  now those are flippers.

Yeah...the flipper award clearly belongs to Reub!

Hope your family gets better fast

I hope everyone and their children get well soon.
Happy Anniversary Linda!
I tried many running shoes and have settled on Nike LunarGlide+ which make my feet and legs feel better than any of the other's I've tried and they come in cool colors.

holey mackeral Rueb. I could make a pair of shoes with one of yours. I think they may be bigger than the flippers I use.

Question:  I may have a little money to play with here in a few weeks.  Training with my CT has been a revelation...  So should I spend on an upgrade to my CT (I have a Nintendo model right now) or a powertap?  I am thinking that it is still all about the engine at this point in time for me....  What say you MG?

spend the money on your family, a trip or two down here to ride the LS course and the rest to your church.

in the mean time put your A$$ in the saddle and freakin' ride.  then go ride some more.  then go run. then ride some more.

I would spend the money on a coach.  I know of a great one! or go local.  Best way to become a better triathlete IMO.

Hello dear MG - hope everyone is having a great evening.

I have a few more questions:

1. What kind of bike computer should I buy for my new road bike? My bike has clips...should I get some bike shoes, or just wear my running shoes for the bike portion of the race?

2. I'm still confused as what to wear come race time. There are so many options. I do know that I want a wet suit for OWS's, but what do I wear under the wet suit? My bike clothes, my swimsuit, a tri suit, commando??? I'm still at a loss as to whether I need a one piece tri suit, or a two piece. (A special shout-out to kkcbelle for getting me hooked on Skirtsports clothing - adorable and now I want to spend $500 on all the cool stuff I've found there.

3. My swimming is going great - endurance-wise. I really don't feel the need to rest very often at all...I'm hardly ever out of breath, and I'm now up to 1500 yards. Should I try to add more distance to my swims, or should I stay where I'm at until I don't need to rest between sets at all? Or....should I try to increase speed to my existing swim plan?

4. Regarding my run - I can comfortably run 2 miles without stopping to walk now (yay!). Should I continue to keep running this distance for a while, or should I add maybe .5 mile on the run? Or should I add a .5 mile walk? Or should I try to run another mile?

I know that my BT training plan tells me what I need to do, but since I'm laying off cycling right now, I figured my body could handle more in the areas of swim/run.

jvanis - 2010-01-20 7:15 PM Ugh 4 hours since my last post and only 3 posts since then?

Here is how I think of strides.  Got this right from Mcmillan who was my first running coach.   I use strides to warm up for speedwork or before a race as part of my warm up. Have fun!

Strides

You're probably familiar with "Strides" though you may call them windsprints, pickups, striders or stride outs. They're not unlike the fast accelerations that you do right before a race. Strides work to improve your sprinting technique by teaching the legs to turn over quickly. It's really the neuromuscular system that we're trying to develop here which is why they are shorter than anaerobic capacity intervals. They last only 50-200m because unlike the anaerobic capacity intervals, we don't want lactic acid to build up during each stride. This inhibits the nervous system and interferes with the neuromuscular adaptations that we want. Accordingly, after each stride, you must jog easily for a minimum of 30 seconds and up to a minute and a half to make sure the muscles are ready for the next one. Not allowing for sufficient recovery after each stride is a common mistake. Take advantage of the longer recovery. It will allow you to put more effort into each stride which really helps develop your speed.

As you might imagine, the pace for strides is very fast - 800m to mile race pace. Note that this is not all-out sprinting. Run fast but always stay under control. These are quick efforts where you practice good form. You'll be amazed at how much your finishing kick improves with these workouts.

You can incorporate some strides or "pick-ups" during the middle of your run or at the end. To perform, run fast for 15 to 25 seconds then jog easily for 30 seconds to a minute and a half before beginning the next one. Begin with four strides and build up to ten to 20.

Hello dear MG - hope everyone is having a great evening.

I have a few more questions:

1. What kind of bike computer should I buy for my new road bike? My bike has clips...should I get some bike shoes, or just wear my running shoes for the bike portion of the race?

Get clippless pedals and a decent pair of bike shoes.  It is the best investment you can make IMO.  Second on my list would be a good HRM/GPS combo unit.  I have the Garmin Edge 305 and it fits the bill.

Look at my avatar.  That is what I wear under my wetsuit.  It consists of a Zoot tri top with a built in bra and Sugoi tri shorts which have a light chamois.  I pull my hair back to fit under my swim cap and then add the headband when I get to T1.  Personally I don't like one piece suits because of the bathroom issue.  I keep it as simple as possible.  If you are big chested test out a few tops.  I don't have that dilemma

How much rest are you taking between sets? e.g. do you swim a 100 and the rest? for how long? how long is it taking you to swim 100?  I am not terribly fast, but can swim for a very long time non stop.  I got that way by developing good form.  Do you have good form?

4. Regarding my run - I can comfortably run 2 miles without stopping to walk now (yay!). Should I continue to keep running this distance for a while, or should I add maybe .5 mile on the run? Or should I add a .5 mile walk? Or should I try to run another mile?

I would add distance or add another day of running to your plan.  No sense in walking if you don't need to.  Listen to your body, especially the next day.

I know that my BT training plan tells me what I need to do, but since I'm laying off cycling right now, I figured my body could handle more in the areas of swim/run.

So I did some of my bike fit.

It took 3 hours and we still aren't done.  He said I was providing a challenge.

My goal.  Be as aero as possible while still being able to hold that position for 56 miles.

My problem.  He was teaching someone else about fits so the guy he was teaching had a book out, there were 3 pictures of someone bending over to check on hip flexibility.  I matched the picture of the inflexible person, standing with feet flat on the floor I can reach to middle of my shin, no further.

When lying on my back he lifted each of my legs up, not flexible there either.

So what it amounts to is that I am not flexible enough to ride as steep as I would like.  he said I was currently riding right on the line with respect to flexibility which he said would work for a sprint or olympic but I would have a very difficult time holding it for a full 56 miles.

So I will be powerful but not as aero as I would like.  We spent a lot of time on my shoes, used the retul system, lots of video (man I should just shave my head....) , etc.

There was also some issue with my knee tracking but not 100% sure were that comes into play.

Going to really focus on improving my flexibility especially in my hamstring and ITband area where he said it was causing the "inflexibility"

All and all it was good stuff

Who's racing this weekend?

Hey

If you are going to take over my job at least do it with a little pizzaz!

So, who is toeing the line this weekend?  what are your stretch goals?  And if you aren't racing what is your one focus workout of the weekend?  And yes, I said one!

Certainly not me!

My one focus workout is to breathe better in the water for the drills tomorrow and Saturday. They are going to kick my yahoo. :-)

this is so great!  not to long ago, end of last mg i think, swimming 100 and running a mile was unheard of. NOW LOOK AT YOU!!!   AWESOME!!!!

1. i have a base model cateye.  but there are a lot of options.  don't over think this.  just get an inexpensive wireless computer. pedals and shoes, clipless if it fits in your budget.

2. didn't some little japanese guy go commando under his wetsuit at IMFL this year? you won't need/want bike clothes.  a bathing suit is fine but i'd  go to a local store that sells tri gear and try a few options on to find out what feels best, as best as you can tell in the store anyways.

3&4 interested to hear what other have to say.

i'm really starting to feel my stroke now.  i know it doesn't directly translate to race distance but in the main this morning i hit 1:18 on a hundred set.  i can't really describe it but man, everything was clicking, i knew it and i could "feel" it.

so here's a thought and a question. the forearm acts as part of the paddle during the stroke.  one of the function's of a wetsuit, as i understand it, is to lower the resistance of water passing you.  so, are the small gains of added flotation of a full sleeve suit offset because of this lowered resistance as opposed to a sleeveless suit where your skin is in direct contact with the water.  assuming the swimmer had no issue handling the distace... not get tired.

Everyone tell me what a wonderful wife I am.   Since I will be doing my first IM in 2011, this season is all about the hubby.  He just signed with a coach, is looking at power meters and I bought him a brand new jonny wetsuit to start his season of "going long".  For someone who claims to be a natural sprinter he is getting too damn good at endurance racing.   So this year I am looking forward to being the primary photographer and race sherpa.    Please excuse me while I go render first aide to my pocket book.  Cry

Just one question.....Do you have a sister?

Havin'Fun - 2010-01-20 10:06 AM We are celebrating our 10 yr anniversary this weekend....wow has time flown!  So we thought about going back to Fiji, where we honeymooned (very romantic), or go on a cruise.  Our choice...take our 8yr, 7 yr & 6 yr old kids on a Disney Cruise.

So my focus for the next few days is getting everyone packed and on board with everything they "need".  Harder than packing for any tri I've done

Not racing, but have a 14 miler scheduled.  This is virgin territory for me.  In all of my years of running before and since I started down the Tri road I have never "run" this far.  I've done 10+ half-marathons and 1 full marathon but the full and some of the halves were all on some version of Gallo-walking...usually 5-1 or something like that.

The plan for this marathon is to run the distance and if I have to walk some it will be water stops only....so any long runs I have from this point forward will be new ground for me.......I am excited about this.

Awesome work on the swimming.  It is a great feeling when everything "clicks" and you feel like Flipper in the water.  Other days I feel like I am sinking like a brick, funny how that works.

My 2 cents about the wetsuit.  I think there is more to be gained with sleeves than you would lose due to the resistance factor of a sleeve.  You will still use your forearm to catch water.  Then again some people who do not need the sleeves for water temp purposes prefer the sleeveless models, I think mostly for ease of exit and freeing up their shoulders, which should not really be an issue with a properly fitted wetsuit.

Good to hear the fitting went well, the good thing is that flexibility can be obtained with some work so you can continue to develop in that area.  I have been debating getting my fit done after I get back from my ski trip.  There are no FIST fitters around here that I am aware of.  The shop I was going to get fitted offers RETUL, but I cannot decide if it is worth double the cost for that or if they will be good enough to get it through a normal fit.

I did some big shifts with my seat last night after my ride, moved it forward about an inch, and lowered the angle so it is around -7 degrees.  I have not ridden but it felt a bit more comfortable allowing me to utilize my sit bones and hopefully keep some pressure off the front.  My ride tomorrow night will tell!

1) No idea on the computer. I just get out and ride. Maybe that's why I am so slow . Shoes.. If you are saying that you have the cage type of pedal then the runners would be good to start with. Wait until you go to the clipless peadl and then get bike shoes.

2) When in doubt go naked.  You would be surprised at how many guys you can beat by just a few yards doing this

3) My suggestion is to work on getting the distance in without having to restt. You can increase your speed once you are at the distance you want or need to be at for your race.

4) When you are increasing your training distance do so in short intervals. You should not increase your distance by more than 10% a week. You do need to feel comforatble enough at your pace and then be able to push yourself past that without too much discomfort. Soooo id you have just reached being able to run 2miles comfortably keep it there for a week or two then increase the distance. If you have been slowly increasing your distance all along then continue to lincreas4e the distance. You seem to be on the right track now.

swbkrun - 2010-01-19 8:17 PM Tracy... Race your seat on your Trek!  Get AERO!!!

Best wishes to hubby and you! That's awesome !!

What's motivating you this winter?

For me - it's an early June HIM race - I am in week 1 of the 20 week BT plan.

Anyone else have an early season HIM ???

Who is doing their first race this spring?  That's a special event, for sure, you always remember your first!

train safe.

fattyfatfat - 2010-01-21 7:44 AM i'm really starting to feel my stroke now.  i know it doesn't directly translate to race distance but in the main this morning i hit 1:18 on a hundred set.  i can't really describe it but man, everything was clicking, i knew it and i could "feel" it.

so here's a thought and a question. the forearm acts as part of the paddle during the stroke.  one of the function's of a wetsuit, as i understand it, is to lower the resistance of water passing you.  so, are the small gains of added flotation of a full sleeve suit offset because of this lowered resistance as opposed to a sleeveless suit where your skin is in direct contact with the water.  assuming the swimmer had no issue handling the distace... not get tired.

bueller?

Very impressive on the swim John. Now hold that pace for 2000 meters and you're in the professional level of tri swim racing
