haha I have quite a memory for things and y our bike isn't really hard to pick out.... I think I saw FatBastard on the bike loop Friday wearing his bulldog jersey but he was going the opposite direction as me.
I so remember them passing me. I clearly wasn't staying with them. I was slowly climbing and they were blowing by me. Glad my jersey is memorable. Hey that was me in my USMC Bulldog Jersey. Next time say hi as you fly by me.
haha, you were on the other side of 9N coming back from Ausible... and I don't like to yell on the bike.. may cause someone to get startled and fall. My brother and friend passed you and your quote stuck with them, along with your jersey... they asked how you were doing and you said,"Staying fat." hahaha |

First off, thanks so much to all of you who are providing us rookies with valuable information about the race, course, what to expect, etc! I'm sitting here in St. Louis and will have no opportunity to be anywhere near Lake Placid before race weekend! Seeing as though this is my first attempt at the 140.6 distance any and all of the information is so much appreciated. So thank you!!! As for something that I've been having trouble deciding - what bike will serve me best on the course? I have a road bike that's fairly entry level but I've ridden quite a bit and I have a tri-bike that's a little nicer, race wheels, etc. I'm having a tough time figuring out what will be the better set-up as I really can figure out what this course is. Climbing is certainly easier in my road bike and it's a more comfortable ride overall - but I feel somewhat silly riding my "lesser" bike in what should amount to the biggest race (albeit I've only done a few tris) of my life?! Does anyone have any advice here? Will it be an overwhelming majority of tri-bikes on the course or is there a good mix of both? Has anyone ridden the course in their road and tri-bike and have any feedback or learn anything? Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks again for letting me read through all of your thoughts about Lake Placid - sounds like an incredible setting and I can't wait to be a part of it all!
TRI-BIKE and just change your gearing to a 11-27 or 28 and you will be fine. There are no TDF climbs but they are long and not that steep. I have ridden both types of bike and i am using my Tri-Bike X2. Aero trumps all. Tri bike without a doubt.
Echo'ing the previous responses.... TRI BIKE!!!
Thanks all! This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. Appreciate the guidance! |

Veteran 178 , New York | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread To update, my official diagnosis after my MRI is a tibial stress fracture. At 4.5 weeks from LP, I may be completely out for the race. At this point my plan is to just substitute all my runs for aquajogging and see how it heals up when I visit the doctor again in 4 weeks. If there's anyway I can do LP without risking cracking it completely, then I'm in. So hopefully I'll see you all there! |

You shouldn't have to explain anything to your co-workers... they should have been briefed last July that you "Signed up for an Ironman". And then very month you should announce the countdown to "Your Ironman". The when you started your 20-week plan another announcement... ETC... I kid of course. In reality, I never mention any of what I do to co-workers, neighbors, non-triathlete friends, or family members. Many of them end up trying to ask me what Ironman is and how much I train, and I just give them generic answers like "Oh, I swim a little, Bike a little, no big deal." Cause when they really pry and ask specifics and I tell them exactly what a 70.3 or 140.6 race entails, and what my actual training was for any given week, they're often completely dumbfounded. Some people are in awe and others look at me like I'm insane. So I just 'keep it all' to myself. I only share my tri-races and training with my like-minded tri-friends |

Expert 696 Sugar Hill, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread For those with experience with bike fittings... I had not had a fitting on my bike in several years until last Friday. I know it is a bit late into training for a fit but a couple factors made it necessary. The new fit feels MUCH better and I'm now able to stay aero almost an entire long ride. Short t runs after feel fine. All that said, I think I'm slower on the bike. My long Saturday ride was almost 1mph slower that previous times on that route and last night I had a slightly slower than usual ride on a route that i do every Wednesday. Some more information before the questions...my previous fit was more aggressive / aero, more of a sprint and/or Oly position rather than an IM position. That is why I can now stay aero longer, I gave up some aero advantage but "should" recoup that by staying aero significantly more through the 112 miles. Also, it seems that this position is putting a bit more load on my hamstrings than my previous fit. Supposedly, this fit, while less aero, is more comfortable, efficient, and will yield more power. Comfort and efficient I see already. Power, not so much. My questions are these: Is this normal for the first few rides after a fitting? How long might it take to acclimate to the new fit? transferring load to the hamstrings and leaving fresher quads, how will this affect my IM run. I'm not terribly worried about this, rather I'd say I'm very curious. With only a month to go I want as few variables in play as possible. thanks. |

IMO you are using different muscles than you have been and they are not as strong and tuned as the ones you have been using. Just a quick answer that seems logical. From what I know you use more of your quads while running so activating your hamstrings more during the bike will "save" your run muscles... again, something that seems logical but could be wrong. I would be scared to change anything so close but as you said you are more comfortable. I would test your power to see what you can hold for 20 min with the new setup but maybe it is even too late for that. for me, I would sacrifice 1mph for comfort over 112 miles. The 15-25 minutes you lose because of that can be made up being "fresher" on the run. Remember, if you feel you underbiked you have 26.2 miles to make it up. |

Regular 304 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I have a little humor for all of you folks with plenty of experience in the mountains. (I'm looking at you, Rusty, and the whole band of you that train in and around LP.) My bike has 4,900 miles on it. Today I went in to a LBS -- not the one where I bought it and normally get it serviced -- to get it looked at and to get a quote for a tune up. I stated right up front that I wanted the head set and the bottom bracket checked, and new cables for shifting/brakes. I told the guy that I thought I was probably due for a new rear cassette and chain. He did a bit of poking around in order to give me a quote. And, just before he got up from the bike stand to head for the computer to schedule the tune up and get the parts quotes, he said, "You should get a new big ring in front. But the little ring looks good. You don't spend much time on it at all, do you?" He just let that last line hang in the air. I couldn't tell if he thought I was an idiot or some sort of masochist who only mashed up hills. Needless to say, I'm sure that on July 22 I'll use both of the front rings. Also, looking at cassettes, I'm replacing my 12-25 not supplementing it. Since the rest of my groupset is Shimano Ultegra, that is what I'm going with and it looks like they only offer a 11-25 or 11-28 now. So, while I'm not going to invest in extra spinning for the uphills -- sticking with the 25 teeth -- I will have one more tooth to use going downhill. I doubt this will matter at LP even though I'm able to spin out on big hills locally...when I get to that point going downhill in a 140 mile race I plan to stop pedaling altogether. I'm hoping it is there for me and matters on OLY and HIM races in the future though. Anyway, one way or another -- whether 2100' or 2300' or 3000' per loop -- I'll be getting familiar with that small chain ring soon enough. |

would I be a mean person if I called shenanigans on this one too?? lol I was just there this past weekend and there was no way Mirror Lake was even 70 degrees.. yet I could be wrong. For comparison there were people in my group wearing neoprene caps and were comfortable doing so. Then again it was at 7am (race time).... LP has air temperature shifts of 20 degrees to the negative at night down into the 50's as evident on weather.com and other sites, including those promoting LP for tourists. I don't see how that lake could have warmed up to 76 degrees in 5 days from mid to high 60's on Saturday. I'm no science guru but something (common sense) tells me that it would take long sustained heat in the 80's and 90's to raise a lakes temperature 8-10 degrees in such a short period of time. Something that Lake Placid hasn't had. Even the 10 day forecast averages are 68-75 degree highs and 47-52 degree lows with a lot of rain... ETA: sorry Rusty... hope the rain holds off until you leave... but T-storms are in the forecast that being said I agree that 75 would be nice on race day Edited by BooTri 2012-06-21 2:53 PM |

But I could definitely tell which parts of the lake were shaded and which had the most direct sun exposure. I wonder where and how deep they measure for the temperature. |
