No...I don't disagree. I think if you do a little shorter version, as you defined above and take the WU and CD seriously, it's alright.

Do you know what your threshold pace is? (85% V02 max) Why I am asking is because you don't want to do that tempo too fast. For me, a 10K pace would be on the fast end for a tempo run.

Also, Felicia, how many MPW are you @ typically?

I don't know any of my zones or VO2 stuff.

You know it's impossible for me to run "fast," right?

When I've done it before, after warming up, I do one mile at 10 mpm, and then aim for 9:30 mpm in the second mile. That's it. All I have is my Ironman watch (thank you, TJ), so I'm not keeping a constant eye on it while I'm running.

Typically 20-25 miles per week, sometimes up toward 30, but usually right around 25.  I'm aiming for 80-100 mpw this summer. 100 is proving to be tough to get to for me this summer if I taper before my races (which is what happened in May).

I should say that I also don't do this "tempo" run even every week, maybe every two or three weeks. I just feel like I need to try to hit that 9:30/mile pace every once in a while so I know what it feels like. If I don't do it sometimes in training, how could I hope to hit it in a race.

Which is why I was really interested in what you said about Hanson's method -- all of that tempo work seems like a good idea to me.

Fast is a term, in this case, relative to you. Smile

Now, I am a huuuuge fan of big miles and think everyone should do them, if they can. But it needs to be done slowly, over time. Ramping up to 100 MPW from that quickly 30 is not advisable! Holy sh*t. You are talking miles, right??????

What is the most MPW you have run, over a period of time? EX: 70 MPW over the course of 8 weeks, stepping back to 60 1 of those weeks.

*And just FYI, I hit paces in races that I don't ever hit in training

OMG. I meant 100 per month. Cr@p. That would be insane. Sorry about that. No. I think I've topped out at 30 mpw. I'm actually pretty happy there. I think it was November or December last year where I hit 117 for the month. With all my big talk and dream of running ultra races, realistically, it ain't gonna happen. I don't even see a marathon in my future. Ever. I'm okay with that.

Okay. Maybe not so okay. There is this trail marathon that I really, really, really want to do. From what I can tell, running that marathon is the only way to get to some of those trails because they are closed, and there are some cool canyons and petroglyphs.

But realistically. No marathons. Innocent

Phhheewwww. Yeah, I was feeling as though I perhaps failed you all with any running advice I have given in the past if there was something that made you think jumping to 100 MPW was a good idea Smile

Sorry for the public berating, now, did you get the answers to your questions?

Speaking of marathons ... do you want to know how to get that faster 10K? Train for a marathon Smile

LOL Great. Train for it, and not run it. But I see the logic. Run lots. Mostly easy. Sometimes hard.

Yes. I got my questions answered, but I think I hijacked someone's post to do it. Stacey's, I think??? I did such a good job taking it over, that I don't even remember who asked the original question. Shame on me.

Hey it's all cool because I got my question answered a few pages back and it's been a very interesting discussion to read.

As a result of the great Manatee advice I have adjusted my planned race back to the 12km. I have started a more conservative training plan which I feel much more comfortable with using the 3-2-1 concept that someone mentioned. It felt good to run today knowing that I could manage the distance that I needed to do and wasn't under mining the plan by having to bail before I could finish it.

So thanks everyone for the great advice.

Umm, well . . . Actually, I had the elevation tool activated on mapmyfitness the other night, and on my 9.5 mile run through town, I think I did gain 50 feet in there somehow.

Yeah, come to Florida I'll show you some of those runs!

I was probably exaggerating about the 50feet gain. I just ran almost five, and I checked the elevation gain --- 7 feet. No wonder I suck at hills.

Man come and visit me. Within a 1/3 mile from my front door and you have either gained 50' or lost 100'. The one "flat" piece of road is 1 mile long and has an elevation gain of 10'. When I first started riding my bike I would ride to this road and then go back and forth along it for like 20 minutes and then ride home. I got some weird looks.

I guess I'm lucky where I'm located.  Depending how you feel on a given day you can go very hilly or more rolling hilly.  There are a few flat-ish areas like the rail trails (trains don't like steep grades, go figure), but mostly constant elevation changes.  I like that, it keeps rides and runs interesting.

I'm jealous.

Enjoy Cairns Jo. I am so jealous and its not just the trip.

I am so sick of being cold already and winter hasn't really even started. It got down to 1 (34*F) here the other morning and a top of just 16 (60*F). It wouldn't be so bad if our house was built to hold heat but it isn't, its built to handle the consecutive strings of 100+ in the summer so its very difficult to get it warm.

My jogo tonight: 30 minutes on the bike towing E!  I feel like it should count double.  The calorie counter in my long definitely does not take into consideration how much work I did! Also, Strava says I climbed 117 feet.  It felt like sooooo much more!  E loved it though.  She was great about wearing her helmet.  If this doesn't make me a stronger rider, nothing will.

Hi Manatees! Thanks to all of you who have checked in on me over the last few weeks. I really appreciate it! I had actually PM'd Yanti after the first few days of the group and asked to leave. I was completely overwhelmed with the coolness of the cool kids & really felt like too much of a newbie to keep up, let alone contribute. But, I see once a Manatee always a Manatee Again thanks for all the inspires & such. I've been stalking the group & will continue to do so

Come run with me - you will get much better at hills real fast.  I don't think there is a 200 yard stretch without some sort of elevation gain and loss within 10 miles of my house.    All I ever run are rolling hills.

What if I had a whopper holder too!  LMFAO.

I just can't say anything clean here! Fachmie!!

Fachmie, it's Whopper time!!  I need to know where to get one of those whopper holders.

Me, my camera, bike and a whopper holder... lot's and lot's of fun pics!

You are the best.  The only chick I know that can meet two strangers in an airport, and within minutes convince them to let you strip them.

Hahaha.. you can't leave, that is the first rule (I just made that up).  You are stuck with us wild and crazy (and sometimes dirty) manatees.  Welcome to the Pod!

On a serious note - I totally understand the overwhelming feeling.  Lot's of information when you get into the sport.  How long have you been doing tri's?  What are your goals?  (I missed your intro).

If you have any questions - post.  Everyone here will help out.

I'm Chad BTW - but our fearless leader has dubbed me "Skrat" - I kind of like it, so I'm keeping it.

x2. Check my elevation on my stuff. Start at 5 ft above sea level, gain 3 feet in entire run, then return to the start place. Yeah, that's right, 3 feet!!!!

ETA: I just checked today's run. I went from 10 ft to 11 ft and back to 10. 1 ft change!

Florida, the one state I can legitimately laugh at on this! hehe. Wink

It's pretty flat by me, but that refers more to total elevation gain. There aren't that many places where I'll go more than half a mile with at least some sort of rhythm buster hill.

Haha, thought you meant per month. That's good how you're checking both weekly and over time. Without doing that bigger check it's quite easy to think we're doing more than we are in the consistency part. Hitting some weeks well, but missing more than we realize on others. I checked mine the other day and, well, gotta pick it up some!

Now that's a great picture!
x2. Adorable! and I totally agree on the towing as extra workout
