I like the Zinn book, too.  I wish I could find it.  It is still packed in a box from my move in December!

I got my swim done today!  Yippee!  It went ok.  I just could not bilateral breathe so my right shoulder is a bit tender right now.  I'll be taking it easy for the rest of the day.  I'm in the mood to bake something!  (I love to cook!)  Does anyone have a good recipe for homemade energy bars that don't fall apart?

I hope everyone is having a good day.  Cheers!

I love to eat, so feel free to send some of those baked goods my way!!

I think DMW on this site (lisazapato could probably verify) has created/modified a lot of recipes for homemade energy bars.

Yes, I know she's made some homemade bars before.  You could try PM'ing her.  I'm not sure if you could see her logs, I think she's on a "friends only" log.

Couple of things:

Sheldon Brown is the patron saint of bicycle repair (may he rest in peace).  I have used his resource for the last 15 years.  Has answers to just about everything.

Also - Alton Brown on Food TV has a really tasty powerbar recipe.  I have made them many times.  The wife likes them so much, she just snacks on them.  I posted the recipe on BT about a year ago if you wanted to search.  OR go to the FoodTV web site and look it up.

Found if for you.  Here is the recipe:  If you have an questions about tips or alterations, let me know.  I have made a couple alterations to make getting ingredients easier/cheaper without sacraficing taste or nutrition.

Anyone/Everyone,

I'm a huge fan of Food TV's "Good Eats". Here, Alton Brown give a recipe for power bars that I have made several time. They are way better than most you can buy and cost effective as well.

I would like to take credit for them like I do when I give them to friends, but I won't this time....

Protein Bars Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2005
Show: Good Eats
Episode: Power Trip

4 ounces soy protein powder, approximately 1 cup
2 1/4 ounces oat bran, approximately 1/2 cup
2 3/4 ounces whole-wheat flour, approximately 1/2 cup
3/4-ounce wheat germ, approximately 1/4 cup
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3 ounces raisins, approximately 1/2 cup
2 1/2 ounces dried cherries, approximately 1/2 cup
3 ounces dried blueberries, approximately 1/2 cup
2 1/2 ounces dried apricots, approximately 1/2 cup
1 (12.3-ounce) package soft silken tofu
1/2 cup unfiltered apple juice
4 ounces dark brown sugar, approximately 1/2 cup packed
2 large whole eggs, beaten
2/3 cup natural peanut butter
Canola oil, for pan

Line the bottom of a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish with parchment paper and lightly coat with canola oil. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the protein powder, oat bran, wheat flour, wheat germ, and salt. Set aside.

Coarsely chop the raisins, dried cherries, blueberries and apricots and place in a small bowl and set aside.

In a third mixing bowl, whisk the tofu until smooth. Add the apple juice, brown sugar, eggs, and peanut butter, 1 at a time, and whisk to combine after each addition. Add this to the protein powder mixture and stir well to combine. Fold in the dried fruit. Spread evenly in the prepared baking dish and bake in the oven for 35 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 205 degrees F. Remove from the oven and cool completely before cutting into squares. Cut into squares and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

mmMMmm foood.  That energy bar sounds good.  I may have to give it a try.

I just had lunch, ok like 50 minutes ago, and it was soooooo good.  I can't wait to get out and go for a run and swim later.  I am going to the tri store right after work and having them fix my flat and to give the bike a whole tune up.  I am gearing up for the tri this weekend, but I am not going to stop training for it.  I am planning a long ride on saturday and I will probably do more after the tri on stunday.

Anyone here doing any tri's in Ohio?  I have mine planned through June and have ideas past that but I'm open to suggestions.

Great tip on the recipe. I love me some Clif Bars even though they're basically cookies right? But I will have to give that recipe a try.

Lauren,
I looked-up the Chesapeake Swim that was in your long-term goals. I vaguely remember people doing that when I was a lifeguard back in High School in MD. Do you know a good place to find other open-water long-distance swims? I keep finding the Key West one and a few others, but 6-miles and up just seems downright insane.

JJweav,
On the ankle pain, at least you're in a sport that has two other disciplines that you can probably do for recovery whereas my pure running buddies get hurt and just have to stop because they "hate swimming" and they don't have bikes. Stubborn.

When my knee was hurting a few months ago, I added another swim and dropped the junk-miles for one day.

I've done Sylvania.  It was a nice race, VERY flat and fast bike ride, nice race.  It's in August.  I've also heard Race for Recovery races are pretty good, but I've never done them.

That's exactly why I love this sport. Even though running is by far my favorite of the three, I'm starting like the other two a little more. So at least I won't be stuck on the couch watching my belly grow if I have to take some time off running.

I used to do aquajogging.  I've suggested it to lots of people.  Lauren, you like it too, huh?  It is such a great alternative to pounding the pavement.

Yeppers, big aquajogger here (more out of necessity than want, though). By the end of the week, I'll have more than 35 hrs logged so far for the year. That would have been about 215+ dry-land miles if I was actually able to run. If anyone has any questions about, please don't hesitate to contact me .

Deena Kastor is also an aquajogger. She did it through injury and ended up breaking the American women's half mary record shortly afterwards; she also uses it to supplement her run volume when it's really high. Deena won the women's olympic trials marathon in Boston last week .

Yes, Sylvania is a fast flat race, I did that last year. It is the second weekend in August this year. They offer both olympic and a sprint race.

Racing for Recovery is also a flat fast course. This is in Monroe, MI and they offer a HIM and a sprint. This is soon though, on June 8th I think.

There are many other good tris in OH (Alum park comes to mind...), check out trifinder.com and click on OH

Got a Trader Joes?  They have every Cliff bar imaginable for about a buck each.  My favorite!  I love cliff bars.....  Power Bars had their run back in the day, but they are blechy to me and there is SO much more out there that tastes good.

Is anyone else's allergies pretty bad this week? I've been doing a lot of sneezing the past few days and dealing with a runny nose, but for the past few hours they've been pretty bad. Good thing I wasn't attempting to run by RPE today, because it was waaaaayyy off (breathing was quite difficult and a bit labored).

yes.  i don't even really have allergies but i've been sneezing a LOT (and really embarrassingly loudly).  that's fine though - the thing i can't stand is the itchy eyes.  after the long bike on saturday i had really itchy eyes, it was all i could do to not rip my eyes out, and it gradually got better, though today they're still a bit itchy.  but i haven't taken any medicine.

historically, 2 weeks into allergy season all my symptoms just go away - i guess i get used to it or something, i think.

alright everyone, I had a good day today.  The eating was awesome.  I was never as hungry as I normally am which is great.  I also got a nice swim in and I feel awesome.

Onto the allergy talk...  I do have environmental allergies and they are kicking in a bit, however... and I'm sure you will all find this a bit humorous.  I am alergic to chlorine, it makes me sneeze alot and have a runny nose.  So right about now I can't stop sneezing.  I know what you are all thinking "But weren't you a swimmer?"  and the answer is yes and it was an annoying 12 years of my life.

Don't have allergies, but I have a mouse problem.  Looks like I will be setting some traps or tearing down the house and building a new one with no holes in the foundation.  On the bright side, I did get a swim in today.  Have a good night.

Trader Joes is awsome. They have the best frozen mango ever! About the Clif bars, if you are not anti-Target they have 6-packs of Clif bars there for under 6 bucks (although this is based on when I bought them last year so it could have changed). The flavors are limited but it's the cheapest price I've ever seen.

Workout done for the day.  It so much easier when I get it done in the morning.

I was walking into work this morning think to myself that I have been to the gym twice since I left here last night.  How many people that I work with have been to the gym twice this month?  Just a weird thought.  Have a good day everyone.
