teash - 2008-06-09 6:16 PM Hey Ladies! I just got back from a local Marshall's store and they had a whole rack of Moving Comfort sports bras in the Moonstone color for $7.99!!! I was able to find an Athena and a Maia in my size. I had already ordered a Fiona style online, and Marshall's didn't have my size in that one anyway. The Athena is cotton, but will be nice for bike/run workouts. The Maia and Fiona are supposed to work for Tri's due to the wicking fabric they are made out of (as I understand it). I am not sure if all Marshall's have them but I thought I owed you a heads up! Leticia

Went to Marshall's thinking maybe they shipped some fionas out here to the west coast since I paid 40 some dollars for mine and I LOVE it. Glad you got some bargains. No fionas. But...the good news... is they had Tyr tops in the women's workout wear section for $12.99 each. They had a women's tag on them and are usually $52 a piece. Then when I got home and tried them on (they fit) I see on the inner tag attached to the material they say "male." I'm wearing them anyway. They are long enough, will be cool and will wick sweat well (may even be able to wear under the wetsuit and not have to put on a shirt in transition) and they have a back zipper for nutrition or a key while biking/running.  You never know what you'll find at Marshall's! Thanks for the tip.

I've never done a serpentine swim, but my understanding is that basically you start in one of the outside lanes and you swim up that lane, and move over to the next lane to swim back, to the next lane to swim back up, etc. Does that make sense??

I have a duathlon Sunday - 2/10/2.

My only tri was a pool swim but I stayed in the same lane the entire time.  I would be interested in others opinions of the best way to change lanes as my next two tris will be serpentine as well.

i just saw a description of a serpentice swim . go to:

http://www.hempfieldtri.com/images/2008_TKS_Athlete_Information.pdf

look at page 6 to see the diagram. You have to go under the lane markers??? It seems pretty stupid to me but whatever, I don't have any other races to do around me that week.

GOOD LUCK to Lynn and Shelley in their races this weekend! Everybody stop by their logs and show them a little support! (I hope I didn't miss anyone! Anybody else racing this weekend??)

How is everyone's training going? Things have been pretty hectic around here with end-of-school-year special activities, etc. My oldest graduates from Elementary School today! I can't believe it! I know it cliche, but it really DOES seem like just yesterday we were bringing him home from the hospital...

I still have a little bit of soreness in one leg left over from Black Bear, so I've been taking it easy the past 2 weeks. I have an Olympic distance tri a little over a week from now. I was hoping I could fit in a little bit of speed-work training between Black Bear and this race, but that's probably not a good idea. I doubt this will be a PR-kind of race for me, but it should be fun, at any rate.

I'm struggling with trying to figure out how to lay out the rest of my season. My primary goal is to make a good showing at the Philadelphia Marathon in November. I'm considering another Half-Ironman, but I'm having a hard time deciding which race would fit best with trying to marathon train at the same time... I also really don't want to be obsessing over fitting training in over the summer. Though my kids will be in half-day programs for a good bit of the summer, so maybe it won't be so hard. I think I'm just going to have to play it by ear for the next couple of weeks, and see how it goes. Not having a firm idea of what I'm training for makes it a little tough to plan my training, though!!

Maybe your body's trying to tell you something. It sounds like your passion is on this marathon and I, for one, will think only more of you if you focus on this. Sounds like you've done a couple of marathons and know the dedication it takes. I've never even aspired to do one.  Maybe that's why running is usually my weakest segment in the tri

Jenn and Margot,

let me know what your race numbers are for philly. I am thinking about going down to watch. I have serious race withdrawl and would actually like to watch a race. i never watched one before and that will be a good one. I will definitely register for this one next year.

Question: does anyone use a garmin 305? and if so do you wear it in the water?

Jenny....I did the Philly Marathon last year and I loved it!  The stretch through Manayunk was a blast.  You hit the 20th mile at the turn-around on Main Street in Manayunk.  It is good timing to be in Manayunk at that point in the race.  I am still trying to decide if I will do a marathon this year.  Philly was my second and I improved my time by 45 min.  Some of my friends are planning to run the Outer Banks Marathon in November.  I am just not sure I can run that long on a desolate beach....as I said, my favorite part of Philly was the most crowded!  Fortunately, there is still plenty of time to decide.

Lesley....I have a Garmin 201...however, I believe it is ok to take the 305 in the water.  Check the website to be sure.

Lynn and Shelley...I hope you guys had great races!  Do a race report so we can read all about it!

Finally, I wanted to tell you all that even though I thought I would not ride a bike again after my month of riding in May, I have decided to start riding a bike to work a few days a week to save on gas.  My car requires premium gas and it is very painful to fill my tank.  I actually only live about 3 miles from work.  Today, I did a trial ride and it wasn't too bad.  The biggest difficulty will be the organization required to pack my meals and clothes.  I have to wear "business casual" clothes, so I can't stay in the bike clothes.  So, this is my challenge this week.  Fortunately, I am only working 3 days this week because I am going to Chicago on Thurs to have a weekend of fun with some of my college girls!  So, I am planning to drive tomorrow to take all my clothes and food into work for the rest of the week and then ride on Tue and Wed....wish me luck!

Happy Training everybody!

I have a Garmin 305 and while I think it says it can be used in shallow water, I do not use mine in water at all. A little rain is fine, but I would not consider it safe for swimming. I used to have a 201 and put that in my sink to soak for a bit to clean the band (dumb me). It ruined my 201 forever and I'm not going to take any chances with my 305. I have heard of people putting it in a ziplock bag and putting it in their swim cap, but that doesn't sound to comfortable to me.

I got a Garmin 305 for valentine's day. I use it a lot when training, tried it racing for the first time at Black Bear. Never use in the water. Skipped on the bike for racing because my cyclometer had the important info. Used it in the run because I'm clueless about how fast I'm running and how hard I can push. For the Philly tri, I plan on using it for the run again.

I've started a report, but times are only estimate based on what was posted at the event.  I rounded everything up to the next minute.  I am still thinking of things to add, but it is complete for the most part.

Well, I just couldn't help myself.....i registered for the Philly sprint on saturday. Wish i was doin the olympic but it will have to wait til next year. I am not cheap or anything but it cost me $159 to register....seems kind of steep. I think it was 120 if i registered earlier.

OMG!! That is a RIDICULOUS amount for a sprint race!! It IS kinda cool to do these big "urban" races, though, and it does cost the race organizers a bundle with closing down streets, police, etc., etc., etc.... Good luck!!!

Try this one and then just click on the article in pdf form you want to read. I was referring to the paleo diet one, but the others are interesting, too.

http://www.trainingbible.com/resources.aspx

I guess you'll have to cut and paste in your browser.

Good luck and have fun to you guys. I'll be rooting you on from here on Sunday.

FYI -I'm running a 10K on Sunday -- IronGirl and its along the coast should be a beautiful run. :-)

For this weekend I'm #1752. I've been focused on planned tapering this week. I think I ran down my muscles a bit when I recommitted to my training plan after Black Bear.

I'm feeling good about the race, my first olympic. I am rethinking my goals -- the top one is I want to have a lot of fun and finish with a huge smile.  I think I'm going to go zen on my pace targets and  enjoy  the venue, the crowds, and other competitors. Around 2 min/100m should be plausible, would love to get around 18mph on the bike (I've heard there are a lot of turns), and 9 minute miles on the run.

I must admit that I peeked at last year's results to see what it would mean to finish in the top third and be a national age group qualifier.

Have you seen what the water temp will be? I think I'll skip the wetsuit.

Good luck, Margot! I promise I'll try to look for you this time! I'll be starting in the 2nd wave, and I have friends who are starting in some of the last waves that I'll be sticking around to cheer on, so maybe I'll see you cross the finish line! I don't have any great expectations for this race... I finished it in about 3:05 last year. I think it's possible that I might be able to go under 3:00 this year, but the big question mark for me still is the run. My swimming and biking are pretty much back up to par, but my run hasn't fully come back after Black Bear (not that my run was ever that fast to begin with!). Like you, I'm just gonna enjoy the day!

The cooler weather this week has brought the water temp in the river back down quite nicely. Rivecast has the temp at 73 this morning, and air temps the next few days look like they'll be pretty mild, so I fully expect "wetsuit legal" conditions. I <3 my wetsuit, and I wear it anytime the conditions make it legal... I gain way more time on the swim wearing the wetsuit than I could possibly loose getting it off in transition!

Lynn - good luck with your first 10K this weekend! Do you have a time goal?
