wurkit_gurl - 2008-09-05 7:16 AM Morning all. Crap - Tropical Storm Hanna has stalled a bit - meaning it's going to smack NoVA on Saturday night/Sunday. If it's pouring rain, I'm not racing.

Meh.  Let the RD tell you whether to race or not.  Otherwise, you paid the money and put in the time.  Race.  It will be a good experience.

Sprint_DA - 2008-09-05 7:04 AM Morning everyone. Good news for me today...I should only have to drive about 300 miles for work.

Where are you headed?  Morning everyone.

I have to head to Fort Madison as soon as I get off here, and then it's Preston, IA.

Yeah, I know it's a dumb way to arrange my day, but these are the two people I HAVE to see today.

No, it's a safety thing. I am a crappy cyclist and shouldn't be racing in the rain. Don't want to take anyone else out. Plus, I do still want to do MCM, assuming these hip issues can be fixed - can't do that if I break something.

Morning all.

Going to UM vs OS game this weekend with a bunch of hubbys work buddies, only problem is that we (hubby and I both went to MSU). So, my question/problem is what to wear, do I go with neutral colors or state colors? Most of the gang going with went to UM or OS.

What colors would you wear?

I'd wear neutral colors.  Of course I know nothing about sports colors so I would probably end up wearing the wrong combo on accident.  Morning and welcome to TAN.

In all seriousness, though, I'm not a good enough cyclist to try to race in a downpour. I want to be able to run MCM and not have any broken limbs, thankyouverymuch.

I hear you. Braking/turning in the rain is a WHOLE different animal than any kind of dry-weather cycling.

Even more fun is when your front wheel seems to magically disappear out from under you on wet pavement. I have scars to prove how much fun that one is.

Then I look back and see that Yanti and MChally did about 4 or 5 pages themselves last night, with a melon press included, God bless them.

Nope, the url tag styles I know how to do don't work here, so I gave up.  And the page looks normal to me.

Heh.  That kind of happened at my race in July.  It stopped raining overnight, but the pavement was still wet.  I hit one corner waaaaaay too tight and back tire fish tailed on me.  I essentially "drifted" through the corner.  Too bad the photog wasn't there to take a pic.  I would pay big money to see the look on my face.  Never went down, but I think I might have soiled myself ever so slightly.

Yeah, I can't corner or turn when the pavement is dry. Not chancing it in the rain.

Now, I'm not trying to be an a-hole when I say this.  But do they make short training wheels for adult bikes, or something that would stop people from worrying about falling over.  If you got used to counter-steering or leaning into a corner a little bit, without the fear of falling, you would learn how to corner in two rides.  It's second nature once you get over the fear of road rash.

Now I'm not trying to talk you into racing in the rain or anything, but just something to practice.... In dry weather the move is to lean the bike, countersteer, etc, and leave the body semi-upright as you come around a turn. When it's wet, do a couple things... First, drop your tire pressure a little, like 5-10psi below your usual. That'll give you a bigger contact patch. Second, when you go around a turn, try leaning more with your body than your bike, i.e. the exact opposite of the dry weather version. And just slow down--sure you give up a couple seconds, but drop 2 gears going into the turn, swing on through, then power out of the turn.

These things are best practiced in a parking lot for a while, but if you work on it the rain won't scare you quite as much.

I'll dig up a tattletale picture off my bike and put it in my log.  Then we can discuss that statement again. Give me a few minutes.

Ok, so something weird is happening.

Two nights ago, when I went for my short run, I felt this funny pinching/stabbing pain under my HR belt.  Right at the sternum.

I thought "Uh-oh, am I getting shocked by the belt?".  I mean, it does have a battery in it, so I thought maybe some sweat or something was causing a little shock.  But as quickly as it started, it went away.

Then last night, swimming, without the HR belt, I felt the exact same thing.  Then I felt it again bending over to grab the recycling bin to take it outside for pick up.

No I have it again.  It really isn't terribly painful.  Feels like really small needles being jabbed just down and to the right of my sternum.  Almost on the edge of my rib cage.

Anyone ever had anything like this?  Just curious.  Not too worried.  More annoyed than anything else.

Sure, but can you average that on a business trip...

I've not gone quite that fast, I think about 135-140 is my top, if I remember properly.

I've actually gone faster than that, indicated...but there is some inaccuracy built into those speedometers.  So that was probably in the 155mph ish range.  And there's now way in h-ll I could do that on a business trip, and little chance I would do it again.  I had some close calls last year and have basically hung it up.  135-140 is still really really fast.  I am always impressed with that bike though.  Things are smoother at 120+ than at 85.
