OUCH!!! How did you do that?????

If you can't find the numbering on the gears themselves you could also simply count them. The numbers represent how many sprokets there are. when your counting the smaler ring on my bike there are 12 when you count the larger ring there is 25. same goes for the crank.

Crashed during a bike race. Only 3 miles to go too and I was about to break to chase down the lead rider who was off the front solo.

I'm in the market for some new tires(clinchers) and since whatever I buy will be what I race Utah on does anyone who has ridden the course have a recommend since many have made comments on the chip seal. I have been rolling Vredenstien Tricomps at 140 psi.

So I have a 12-27 and a 53-39. Is that good for climbing?

Kido - 2010-02-17 10:45 AM I haven't started making arrangements yet...  Mistake?  I plan to stay at the Best Western I always stay at when racing  up there.  I know were all the good places are to eat around town and that area.

I seriously plan to probably make the drive the day before the race (from Vegas).  Then leave the next morning, or if my wife can come, have her drive me  home that night to sleep in my own bed.

BTW, this is my second IM.  So far the training is going GREAT.  It actually seems easy so far, and I'm following a more aggressive plan than I did for my first.
Please do not arrive the day before the race. If you arrive on Friday for the Saturday race you will NOT be racing. There is no athlete check in the day before the race. You must be checked in by Thursday.

I guess I SHOULD have said I'm just getting there the day I have to (if that's check in day, or bike drop day, etc).

I just meant I'm not going to get there any ealier than I have to.

With the 12-27 in place already, the biggest consideration would be as to whether to switch to a compact double in the front (which would be a 50/34 rather than a 53/39).  But if you went that route, you might not still need the 27 in back...

This is of course a personal question, since it will depend largely on your climbing ability. I would suggest you go to mapmyride.com and map out the IMSG course and then map out a hilly course that you have ridden and see how they compare (one of the options on the site is to click on elevation). This will give you a clearer idea of were you are. Remember to look at the distance of the climbs not just the elevation.
If you find yourself in your lowest gear when you typically ride, you really might consider upgrading to a different gear set up.

So sorry to hear, at least it was for a good cause. Hope you recover quickly and stronger, sometimes forced rest can be a good thing....

Actually, I've rode the course in between Christmas and New Years. It was tough, but doable. I have been training a lot of hills as a result. There were only a couple of spots where I was wishing that I had another gear. I am not a strong biker, but I am working on it. I think that I will be able to do it with the gearing that I have. I am assuming that if I change out the front, I won't have as much pull on the down hills. I want to keep that as I am completely fearless on a down hill.

When are you getting to St. George? Driving out on Wednesday, so I have plenty of time for check-in, setbacks, accidents, random things that may come up, etc.

Where are you staying? Super 8 Motel. Yuck. Not a fan of the hotel, but the Best Western was already sold out and those 2 are the closest I could find to the finish line. I'm going solo, so I need a room that's as close as possible.

How many Ironman races have you done? Just two half Ironmans, this will be my first full!

Is your training on pace with what you planned? Yes! I'm feeling good about it. My main concern is actually the cold water during the swim. I'm worried about the hilly ride, but I think I can push through it.

Whew, ok, just wanted to make sure. I've heard horror stories of people that showed up day before the race and WTC held strongly to their policy. How bad would that suck?

When are you getting to St george? I'm arriving on Monday.  I wanted to have as much time as possible to adjust my body to elevation, time change, etc.

Where are you staying.  I'm staying at America's Best Inn and Suites

This will be my first IM. I did two HIMs last summer.

I have been following the beginner IM training plan from BT and am on target with that plan. I have been adding a 1/2 hour to each long ride just for the extra time in the saddle.  I am excited and will be ready come race day!

Just a few questions for everyone.

When are you getting to St. George?  Thursday early AM.  Driving from LA.

Where are you staying?  Country Inn and Suites

How many IM races have you done?  This will be my first.  Longest to date is an OLY, though I will have completed a HIM by then (at least, I will be toeing the line on a HIM...best not to get too cocky!)

Is your training on Pace with what you planned?  No FREAKING idea.  I'm doing the BeIRONFit competitive plan and am pretty much spot on with what that is prescribing.  Whether it will be enough, too much or too little remains to be seen.

Just a friendly and hopefully reassuring comment:  I suspect that no matter what gearing anyone uses, when they get to the 2-3 steeper efforts, they will  wish they had another gear.  LOL.

I come from the camp of, "sometimes, its just gonna be difficult".  I think this course has a few of those moments.  Speaking only for me, I feel that even if I went to a 12-27, those few pitches will still be a challenge.

If you did it before, you'll do fine on race day with all the added energy that it brings.

Monday, since I want to acclimate and also just check out the area.

Where are you staying?
Super 8

How many IM races have you done?
This will be #1

Is your training on Pace with what you planned?
Training going excellent. My main challenge is to back off the bike pace slightly. My HIM pace is around 21/mph average, and I have paid for it on the run.

Thursday night

Luckily I have family that I will be staying with. Of course, their house is a 10 minute drive from the finish line, but not a big deal.

Second full IM, with two HIM and a handful of short distance races.

I have been using a bike trainer to beef up my time on the bike, but we will see how that works.  The first IM I did had me focusing on the run, so my bike time was pretty shabby.  Hopefully I spend enough time in the saddle to have a good bike time on this tough course.

Make sure you get there before 4:00pm Thursday. Sorry to harp on this but the Saturday race means everything is moved up a day early and it would just totally suck if you got there after 4:00 Thursday and couldn't race.

Coming back from a calf / achilles tear and giving what my leg will give me, so I'm alittle bit behind.  My bike fitness is still off, run fitness almost there, and swim is there (as there as it will be).  Honestly I just want to show up and finish, which is a far cry from putting in 100 milers on the bike, 14+ hour workout weeks prior to my injury.

Is your training on Pace with what you planned?

Yes, I think I am stronger, faster than the last Ironman.  As far as pure endurance I have my doubts.  This training plan is so much different than what I did before.  Training for an Ironman in the winter in Colorado is less than ideal also.
