Havin'Fun - 2010-04-09 2:44 PM Thanks everyone for your kind words.  We really appreciate them.

On a positive note, last Thursday Connor's Neurosurgeon gave him a 100% release.  Then, last night while I was at my daughters soccer practice a lady hands me this local kids magazine that is coming out today (turns out it is her magazine).  Connor is in one of the pictures on the cover and in a story in the magazine.  The picture was taken during the last game he played (two days before the accident).  He is #22, carrying the ball........

Wonderful news.  Looks like quite an active kid.  Glad he is doing well.

he needs to get those shoulders squared though.  i don't see any tulips so why tip toe????

someone need to teach #2 on the green team a few things about taking an angle too.

how about some mouth pieces that actually fit.

whats a running back doing wearing #22?

same color flags for both teams???????

Linda---I am so happy for you and your family...what a great shot of Connor! Amazing what the human body and spirit can do!

I do have a question for Linda and the other swimmers...how in the blazes do you keep track of laps?  Today was my practice HIM swim so a 2000 and I started to break them into 4x500s in my head, but then the glaze came over me and I had no clue where I was....I had to ballpark the last 1000....I stopped looked at my watch, knew I couldn't be done that fast and kept going....not very precise!

I can't answer your question.  I am the worst.  I always get lost in my own thoughts on long sets, and many times will loose count.  If I can't figure out how far I've gone I'll just start with the last lap I remember counting....basically I penalize myself and end up swimming longer.  But breaking it up, into say 500's or so, is what I will do most of the time.

pace clock.  or in my case a pace watch.  so for a 2000 i know my 100's should be in done in say 1:45.  so i'll hit start on my watch and go.  i'll hit the lap button every hundred.  the watch shows what lap i'm on so i don't have to count.  it also shows lap time.  so if i space and forget if i'm on a 50 or 100 i'll glance at the watch when i get to the wall.  if the lap time is :52 or close i know i have another 50 to go. if it's 1:45 or close then i hit lap or i'm done.  i have lap time, total time and lap number right in front of you.  as you can tell form the below i can also tell if i need to ease up or hurry up.  works for me.  maybe for you to.

so here is lap 1.

lap 2

the watch does all the work. and its saved for later for you to record.

here's a pace chart i refer to often before a swim cause i can't do the math in my head.  ha!

this is what I do...ready?? Ok ... 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 then 6 then 7 then 8 then 9 then 10. I add 1 number every time I touch the end of the pool. Here in Canada we call than 'counting.' I do that until i reach the desired number I am looking to get to. So if I want 40 lengths which would be 1 km, then I would count to 40. make sense??

Actually I usually break it up into 10's. Its easier that way. And if I goof off and forget, I just add a couple extra lengths for good measure.

swbkrun - 2010-04-09 1:36 PM Good Reads....

Okay, I'm going to open a whole can of worms here, but I'm sure many of the other mom's in this group will back me up. Steve, pay close attention to the things mentioned in that article.  Ever since my girls were born I can not jump on a trampoline or do jumping jacks without peeing myself and for the first 4 months I had to learn to run without peeing on myself.  I am convinced some of the issues I am having with my hips and this injury are from giving birth to 2 thanksgiving turkeys, and  I blame the residual layer of fat over my tummy on them as well.  Not that I would change any of it, but get ready to hear about bodily complaints you would have never thought Kim would have. Wink

Since you opened this can of worms, Tracy, just putting it out there that you do not have to have given birth to have this problem!

Teachers and doctors and other women that hold their bladders for far too long are notorious for developing this "issue".  And that's all I'm gonna say about that!

Darn, I was a teacher in a prior life so I guess the chips are really stacked against me!

Yeah I use a watch and when doing my turns I hit the lap button.

LOL when doing 200's I always forget which 50 I am on, so I would be lost without the watch.

I never even heard the word episiotomy before my wife gave birth to our kids. Our experienes have parallels to yours, although I have never seen Robin on a trampoline and she did not pee herself AFAIK.

Yep, I am pretty sure it's more painful to listen to all the whining they do vs. actually giving birth ; )

It's all meditative for me. I simply say the number the entire time I am swimming the length (1-1-1-1-1-1-1,2-2-2-2-2-2-2, etc.). I think I have done it so much and for so long that I can meditate on a number and also still have fleeting thoughts of other things. I also break things up. Today I did a set of 1000's and I'd sort of think of it is 2x500 or 5x200 or 10x100, and then around 600 yards I'd think about the 400 remaining, 300 remaining, etc.

I keep track of the laps with the alphabet - an animal or a personality trait for lap (alligator or angry, bear or bit**y) or I do 3 laps free, 1 lap stroke to count 100s......or I cheat and watch the pace clock on deck.

Well, day 2 of awesomeness.  So yesterday I rocked a swim and run at paces I was quite happy with.  I am changing offices this weekend so we were told to leave at noon which I figured would happen so I had prepped my bike last night getting it ready to ride outside.  I wanted to do my friday bike workout (4 sets 5 minutes at 85,90,95,100 FTP w/ 5 mins at 80%)  I also wanted to take advantage of the day, so I said why not do the workout and keep going.

I was about 12 minutes into my ride when I see a guy on a bike turn onto the road I am riding, and  I was sitting at a light.  Sticking with my workout I did my wattages, and finally on my last 5 minute rep, I passed him, only to have a few minutes left and then backing off to 80% he rode up on me and said man keep it up you are pushing me, I shoot back that I had been following him for a solid half hour not knowing if I would catch him ever or not.  Turns out we turned around at the same place and road most of the way back.  Fellow tri guy, was a good ride today!

The ride - 35 miles, average wattage 179 (eh), but averaged 19.9 MPH over that distance(including time stopped at lights etc).  Seeing as I have only done this distance once before last fall, I was pretty happy, about a MPH faster than I was last fall, and I have a LOT left in me, either distance or pushing harder, looks like those killer workouts indoors actually paid off.  I have a good feeling about this season

Awwww man, that takes me back. I have vivid memories of the summer I was 11 and I decided I was gonna qualify for Far Westerns in the 400 free. Nobody thought I could do it (but they never told me such). I worked my tail off all summer and qualified by something like 11 seconds. Truly, that was life-changing for me and taught me the value of goal-setting and hard work. I still remember the new suit I got for my qualifying meet. I still see my coach walking up and down the pool cheering me on, waving his clipboard, jumping up and down when I held my pace and crushed my goal. Thanks for the trip down memory lane...!!

And tell us how your speech goes! That is awesome that you are going to talk about that!! And thanks for being a swimming official! My parents did that for years and years -- hard work, and thankless. So thanks.

jvanis - 2010-04-09 4:16 PM Well, day 2 of awesomeness.

DAY 2 of AWESOMENESS!!!!   YOU DA MAN!!!!!   but the question we all want answered is which hydration system did you use?

well,  there's our answer!

Forgot I snapped a pic before heading out.  Speedfil was just water and the Bonty Aero Pack had 1 serving of Infinit.

Hope to have my disc cover, rewrap the bars, and either a Jet 60 or Trispoke front sooner than later.  After riding today, I am thinking the front end could go down a little more.  Felt solid and hardly ever left aero bars. My Look Keo 2 Max's should be in this next week!
