Just be mindful with those 3 and u should be fine IMO. I am following the IronFit plan (book) and that is what they have in the scheduele for the next three weeks; also, most of my friends doing the race are doing the same (or fairly the same) so I'd think that is pretty much standard across the different training plans.

good luck and c u in NC!

Just had my first nightmare about the race last night. I could not find my race number or my bike. I also had forgotten all the items I needed to do the run and all my nutrition.

Only 32 more days to go hope they go fast

Some of you are making this IM newb feel totally inadequate.  My swim vol is down some fighting mild case of swimmer's shoulder, and honestly tired after 15+hrs last 3 wks (& 4 of last 5wks).  Looking forward to 'enforced' rest day tomorrow (16+hr work shift), my last training century this weekend, then tapering a bit.

See ya in Wilmington!!!!

Inadequate? Trust me, you're way more prepared than I was at my first IM - I think I'd averaged around 8 or 9hrs/week! Talk about undertrained.. With the kind of work you've done, I'd say you were ready to have a great day.

Here's a stupid story to make you feel better.  This newbie went out for a 100 mile ride and ran out of water.  The playground I stopped at to refill had turned off their water for the winter.  So I'm out in BFE, Ohio hoping to come across another source.  No luck!  Made it 85 miles before starting to feel a bit disoriented.  Phoned the wife for a ride home.

Embarrassing, but I found it an interesting experience.  That was my first time experiencing the effects of dehydration.  I'm staring at my GU packs wanting more nutrition, but fighting the urge knowing how they'd hit my stomach without a water chaser.

Next ride I'm routing through larger towns and taking a camelback for backup!

Anyone else have tricks for managing water on long rides?  I could do two 50-mile loops and refill at the house, but I find those too challenging mentally.  (My long rides are already mentally challenging enough!)

I enjoy light traffic and rides in BFE, so I always use my Camelbak with 100 oz bladder (it's either a Mule or Hawg) and had room for nutrition, tubes, tools, small pump, etc.  And if I started with arm/leg warmers or worried about getting cool I can carry I have storage room if needed.  I can normally keep the water cold by packing it with as much ice as possible on real hot days and that usually works out well.

I also use Infinit on long rides and carry one or two concentrated bottles I can handle it warm provided I have the cold water chaser.

I only recall a couple of real hot ride last year with someone training for IMKY and riding the Rev 3 full course both were over 6 hour rides with temps in the mid 90's and high humidity, that I needed to stop and get some water and gatorade at a gas station otherwise I'm not stuck looking for water or stores along the way.  I wear it so often that I really don't notice it but I'm sure it may take someone a bit to get used to if you don't normally use one.

Breakaway to the Beach double century over the weekend made me feel better about my bike. Jumped off after the first day and ran for 20 min just to get a good feel and to try and look cool in front of the cyclists!

Hey Kenney,

If I were you, I would focus on getting some solid training in including a long ride and a long run for the next weeks.  At your age, I think you would be much better suits to put in some solid mileage this week and next, and then start tapering as opposed to for 3 more weeks of big volume.  Your long rides are a little shorter than I would recommend, but you still have time and I have definitely seen people do fine with less training than you have already.  Just get to work this week and next week to boost up your confidence and you'll be ready.  However, at the same time, its very important to listen to your body to prevent injury.

Bummer man!  I would highly recommend you carry some money with you at all times on your bike.  I usually keep at least $5 in my bike bag just in case I ever get myself in a situation like you did.  If you hydrate properly, its extremely difficult to carry enough fluids for a full century ride.  Doing a 2 loop route is a good idea or just planning to stop at a convenience store should work.  If have specific sports drink you want to use that they don't carry in stores, you can always put individual servings into plastic bags and mix them with water at a convenience store.

Its important to remember how significant proper hydration is during your workouts.  Yes, you may be able to survive or get through a workout on minimal hydration, but remember that its going to take your body that much longer to recover from the workout if you're very dehydrated at the end.  The recovery process will begin so much faster and be much quicker if you stay on top of your hydration.

Thanks for the ideas, rottieguy and PeakTriCoaching.  This weekend I'll take both my camelback and $10 along just in case.  I do take cold weather gear with me, so it IS nice to have an extra place to stow it.

Never thought of the extra recovery time it might cause.  Not great during peak training!  Thankfully I'm feeling good right now -- quitting was the right choice.

I look forward to finally knocking out this century ride!

I don't know about you all, but I'm getting positively stoked about B2B!

Livestrong191 posted the following in the above mentioned thread:

1) when looking out at the start they say swim right and current will take you . Yes it will but will take longer because to fighting the current just to get to the first big buoy. IGNOUR the first buoy.

Sorry I don't understand this, you are saying ignore the first race buoy off the beach at the swim start, and not go around it?

23) when you get to the right turn swim on the LEFT  towards the GREEN  Channel marker. From there swim straight to seapath . DO not stay right and loop the buoys you can swim anywhere. STAY left and swim straight to seapath. Saves you 5 mins swimming.

Last year, lots of folks cut this corner and swam along the docks in the right hand corner, then swam through the corner on a straight course as you suggest.  Very smart.  I on the otherhand, probably wasted more than 5 minutes by doing the turns.

Good info.  Can  you pls clarify your first point though?

Sorry!  The Wilmington YMCA is a sprint that starts at Blockade Runner.  The swim is 1500m.  I don't remember there being a "first buoy" last year but there *was* a first channel marker.  At any rate, the first buoy/channel marker is not relevant for the B2B Half or Full since neither starts at Blockade Runner.

The main thing to remember here is RED GREEN.

Another clarification on this -- a friend of mine posted on the Beach2Battleship Facebook group:

There are a few buoys early in the full course, IIRC. The hard left is very easy to spot, as they park a boat with the wiggly-man right at the turn. Once you make that left, stay near the red markers to stay in the deep water. After red-18 you'll see the high-rise where we get out and aim for green-19 and green-21 on the way. Aim for the FIRST ladder, or even short of that and the tide will get you there. If you aim for the last one, you'll have to fight the tide to get back to it.

they are channel markers, i.e. numbered red and green signs up on wooden posts to let the boats know where the deep part of the channel is. If you keep the red ones just to your right, and the green ones just to your left, you'll stay in the deep water, which is where it is FAST!

I like the sounds of about an 18-21 day taper.  However, I don't recommend a 60/10 brick (assuming you mean a 60 mile ride with a 10 mile run).  That's too long of a brick run.  In could be a difference in philosophy, but I actually never have had any of my athletes ever do a 10 mile brick run, especially not a someone going for their first IM distance.  You want to make your run taper the longest of the 3 sports.  I don't want to mess with your strategy too much and 10 mile stand alone 10 mile run that far out sounds fine, but not as part of a brick...

x2

Most of the literature out there says the same thing. Your endurance work is done on the bike, the run is just to get your body used to run off the bike (IMO).

Sounds like you might also frown upon the 3.5k/37m/10k S/B/R workout this IM newb did a couple days ago.  I didn't really plan it as a brick, just scheduling thing to keep progressing towards my week's target volume.  Yesterday was rest day (due to long work shift).  Swam 4.1k this AM (straight sc pool swim) & feel pretty decent (inc. my L swimmer's shoulder).  I plan a short (20mi/10k) easy brick for this PM.  Been trying to follow Fink Intermediate, but due to complex work schedules I've resorted to a few 3-sport days each month to hit weekly training volumes.  Prob not the best approach, but hasn't killed me yet Tongue out

Hopefully the map I attach will be at a decent viewable size.

I read everyone's comments regarding the swim and created the attached map (just of the HIM - the full is a straight shot down the channel to the HIM start) based upon those comments. I am a visual person so a map is worth a thousand words to me.

The Legend is as follows:

yellow dots - channel markers   orange triangles - turn buoys   red dots - start finish   blue line - swim path

So... If I understand correctly, this map shows the path I should follow (assuming the turn buoys are placed as shown) to get the most benefit from the currents. Will I get DQ'd if I cut the corner (dashed blue line) as shown? Is the pink sight line what everyone means by "aim for the dock and allow the current to carry you"?

P.S. I am a master clyde in the last wave at 9:00am for the HIM and swim slowly. I will be one of the last 25 out of the water most likely.

Just got back in from my last century before B2B.  Rode the tri bike (with new wheels!) on suburban route with 10-20mph winds.  Riding aero for hours in traffic strains my neck, & all those stops & starts take it out of the legs. No wonder cars get better MPG on highway vs city.

Hope this trusty steed helps me to the finish line at B2B....
