Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Body Composition Challenge Round 2: The Holidays Up 2 pounds to 143 even though I was down a few ounces on my weight loss goal for Wednesday. I blame McDonalds and Winchells on Thursday. Yes. Had both that day and little calorie burning. So busy with Christmas and soccer association stuff. Today we had the FIFA (World governing body of soccer) president on island and I was on the team parade crew. Can you imagine how stressful it was to herd and control a kabillion kids?! Yeah. At the buffet afterwards I consoled myself, and I only got my mile Runner's World Run Streak mile in. Plenty calories in, little calories out. Hopefully a more chilling week to come. |

Ain't that the truth but I have done really well...no beer for over a week. Tonight I will be very bad though as it is my wife's holiday party and I am the official photographer. In order to perform I have to exist my introvert self---best way for me is to have a few libations! |

I'm back from a ton of traveling, and will be leaving again on Friday. The scale once again confirmed that I cannot just eat what I want... up 4 lbs since my weigh in 2 weeks ago. Exactly my case. I didn't do much of anything sweaty last week, except maybe eat a few dishes that were too spicy, but I ate like I was training for something big. Gained 4 pounds too. Oi! Last night was my first night of swim team. Dang! Didn't know swimming hurt like that! 1350 yards of drill, drill, drills. My calves were threatening to cramp, and my shoulders and neck were aching towards the end. Arms are sore today. Back it this week though after a busy last week/weekend. |

Master 1480 Southwest Chicago 'burbs | Subject: RE: Body Composition Challenge Round 2: The Holidays Back to being incredibly anal about calorie tracking... while it's a PITA, if I'm honest with myself I know it's the sure-fire way for me to stay accountable. And to go beyond that -- I'll be reporting calorie intake/burned/net to my roommate (who is also my personal trainer) on a daily basis and she's got full license to give me hell if things go awry. I've been HUNGRY these past few days, but there's a certain satisfaction in denying myself the stuff I know isn't good for me. Or simply not eating when I know that I've have more than enough calories for one day. It's been a good reminder that it's OKAY to be hungry. Just because my stomach is rumbling doesn't mean I necessarily need to eat. |

Just because my stomach is rumbling doesn't mean I necessarily need to eat. Sadly I haven't been hungry!! I'm doing brutal this month. There's just SO much going on that my plan of attack is to just keep the balls in the air and do what I can to get through it. Unfortunately the result is that I'm gaining like 1/2 a pound PER DAY!! When I'm not at someone's house eating what they give me and drinking like a fish - I'm at some work function where the choices SUCK. And then at home - when I could throw something healthy together - I'm too tired and lacking patience to listen to my family's resistance, so I make something I know they will all like... often creamy pasta of some sort. No resistance aside from my tightening pants. I'm really really hoping that this isn't permanent gain - perhaps salt from eating out? Maybe water retention given the time of the month? please please please! |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Body Composition Challenge Round 2: The Holidays There was another list on thedailyplate.com yesterday about diets that don't work. It was dismissing the paleo diet because of the foods eliminated .....ZI have never done paleo, nor even researched it that much. Has anyone done the paleo diet and what are your general evaluations from it?
I did South Beach which was not listed specifically, but Atkins was also listed and the big difference between them is South Beach is less restrictive after the initial 2 weeks with lower fat meats in general. There were diets I never heard of that were ridiculous,. Like the chewing diet where you chew all food 80X but spit it out after that. Ummmm, GROSS and let's just go bulemic? Right, sooooo *healthy* glad that one was panned! |

Has anyone done the paleo diet and what are your general evaluations from it? I did Paleo for about 6 weeks. And was pretty "eh" afterwards. I didn't lose a bunch of weight, I didn't notice any miraculous surge of energy, nor have any nagging injuries/health issues disappear. It didn't have any bad side effects as far as I could tell, but also didn't do too much for me either. Perhaps I was eating too much fruit? I guess my $0.02 on all this... I think I feel best when I'm simply eating clean. No processed food. Low sugar. Not too many grains, and try to stay away from the processed ones when I do. |

I agree, I have not heard much good, or bad, about the paleo diet. I have not been very good lately on sticking to it but what makes me feel the best is similar to you Laura. 6 +3+1 that is six veggie servings, three fruit and a handful of nuts or seeds. Minimizing grains and making sure the foods are whole. That with a lean protein with each meal. The fruits and veggies fill you up and give good energy. Now that the thyroid meds are kicking in, I am looking forward to a steady decline in the restrictive clothing! |

Right, sooooo *healthy* glad that one was panned! After the birth of my child I lost quite a bit of weight and did the South Beach diet to get rid of the last little bit. Basically you are limiting carbs for 2 weeks. Meat, eggs, low fat cheese etc are okay. Nuts in a reasonable amount. I lost 10 pounds in 14 days and managed to keep it off even after slowly incorporating other foods back in. I've heard of Atkins but never tried it. I did some reading on paleo but it would require me giving up too many things that make up a regular part of my day (rice, beans, dairy etc) and whenever something is soooo restrictive - personally - I don't think it's all that good for you. I've heard people have done it and feel great but maybe it's not so much the diet but just a change to healthier eating. My .02 |

Right, sooooo *healthy* glad that one was panned! For the most part I do follow Paleo, mostly due to my stomach issues/acid reflux. I find eating grains, rice, pasta, potatoes, heavy starches, etc just throws my gut into a tailspin. Although I can tolerate sushi. I go back and forth on dairy and right now I am not eating it. However, I don't eat cheese at all (gave it up in '96), so for me diary is yogurt and cottage cheese. When I don't eat dairy my skin is much better and I have read some not so great things about the hormones in US dairy products. Sugar is my downfall and I do enjoy my alcohol, but based on the above I should be a stick-figure!! LOL Currently, I'm getting closer to being a Pescatarian by default. I'm eating lots of tuna and talapia along with egg whites for breakfast. |
