Whoa. Nobody else includes condoms, cash, and razor blades?

Other than what everyone else listed, I also take a couple short zip ties and a small length of duct tape.

What do you guys and gals carry with you on the bike for long distance racing with respect to repairs?

I have a Bontrager speed bottle that is awful for drinking out of so I use it as storage instead.  For IMMT I will have two tubes, one CO2 cartridge, C02 chuck and a multi-tool in the bottle and then another CO2 cartridge and the tire levers tucked under my saddle.  I will have extra tubes and CO2 in my special needs bag as well.

Anything else I should think about including?

1 tube under my seat.  1 tube, 2 C02 cartridges, chuck, 2 levers, small patch kit, multi tool in my saddle bag.  The patch kit is more for putting it over a small hole in the tire if necessary just so the tube doesn't try to escape.  May be a waste of space but it's no larger than a matchbook.

I'm not currently planning to use a special needs bag but if I change my mind, maybe another tube, CO2, body glide.

make sure to have a special needs run bag. I'm giving them out :-)

I'll make sure to have condoms, cash and razor blades if needed. Not sure what the razor blades are for ...but whatever.

I think the razor blades are for finely grating up your salt tabs for easy consumption.

I carry a razor blade when racing.  I race tubular’s.  If I need to change a tire and I can not remove it.  I use the razor blade to cut the bad tire diagonal across the rim to remove it.

This is my tubular bag/repair kit I carry for races.

http://ravx.com/site/1211/mini-x/

I can get the following in it.  It is tight but I am great at packing.  Folding the tubular just right is the key and it is pre-glued as well.

1 Tubular Vittoria Corsa EVO CX-II tire
2 C02 with injector
1 “crack pipe” (only with disk cover on)
1 razor blade
1 handy wipe
2 pennies (only with disk cover on)
1 Valve stem removal tool (smaller than a dime)

I have 1 can of pit stop strapped under the bag with Velcro.

EDIT

This set up is for Half Iron and Full.

So do you care about your USAT ranking?

I usually do, but won't get a ranking this year as not enough races.

I made All American the last 3 years and was proud of that. Always wanted to be in the top 100 in the M40-44 AG, but I think only came like 127ish or so.

You care?

Yep I track it made HM trying to make AA............

Maybe next year.

Watching some Olympics and I just watched the semi finals of the 200 IM.  When did they start doing the funky touch-flip turn when switching from back to breaststroke?

I'm probably 10 years late noticing this...  Embarassed

Nope. I don't remember seeing them in Beijing, but that could just be me. Also, not everybody does them.

Finally saw what you were referring to in the 200IM tonight. We called them "suicide turns" when I was racing. Don't really feel they are any faster than the bucket turn...They just kind of look cool. Haha.

That's pretty much all I carry for HIM/IM. Only carry one of everything though and have extra in my special needs bag. So far I have been pretty lucky in my races, and training rides, and haven't had to deal with a flat. *knock on wood*

Holy Crap that's a tough ride. 4:40 up. 1:20 down. Record is 2:32 up by Ryder H. Unbelievable. Couple times I had serious doubts about making it. About 7k feet when the hamstring cramps started, but worked through it. Can't recommend Maui cyclery in paia enough

Congrats Chris.  Definately an accomplishment.  7k feet is just past the Ranger Station, so yeah, that's where it gets a little challenging.  Not to mention the last quarter mile before the summit where it gets really steep.

Pictures?

Went for a 30 min run this morning and have a 90 min ride scheduled for after work.  Thinking about going out for a group ride on my road bike for the first time this year.

Of course, as soon as I typed that I had this voice pop up in the back of my head asking why I would risk something like that this late in the game.

Half Iron and longer i carry a spare tube, multi tool, co2 and chuck, tire levers and a long valve extender. Sprints and Oly's i carry nothing, if i flat i walk it in.  I use clinchers for racing.  If i was racing an IM, i would probably carry extra stuff.

Fred D - 2012-08-02 5:08 AM Slept in and had coffee with my wife this am. One thing I have learned over the years is that missing a few workouts is better than getting them all in when you are really tired. Of course if I didn't have the job I do and my wonderful family I would have more time to recover and train better....but considering how wonderful a family and intense of a job I have, I'm pretty pleased I even have time to train for an IM despite it being low on volume.

I don't know how you do it in the field you are in. I think you do a pretty good job of fitting it all in. Obs/gyne is HCORE.

USAT:  I like to follow it.  It is about the only thing USAT offers that I actually feel offers any value...at least from the surface.

Fred: I am in a similar boat as far as time constraints although my job is not near as stressful.

I had a great run yesterday, especially considering I was up half the night with a sick daughter.  I ran about 10 miles at HIM race pace (7:10 m/mi) with quite a few hills included and felt good with just a little bit of change in RPE towards the end.  Felt really steady and solid.

I have not been able to get to the pool much this week which has been common this year.  I just hate spending 2 hours out of my day for a :40 minute swim.  20 minute drive each way; 10 minutes to get ready/get out BLAH.  I would rather go run or bike for 2 hours then waste my time.  I need to find a solution for that!

Bryan wanted me to post the following for everyone, this is copied from a PM regarding USAT ranking

Tell the group " 'ya I follow them!"

2011 Final National USAT Rank: 98.10807 14th in M40-44 All American
2010 Final National USAT Rank: 95.9948, 20th in M40-44 All American
2009 Final National USAT Rank: 95.5610, 14th in M40-44 All American
2008 Final National USAT Rank: 94.4435, 27th in M40-44 All American
2007 Final National USAT Rank: 93.6301, 22nd in M35-39 All American
2006 Final National USAT Rank: 89.1228, 120th in M35-39 All American

Because I have been in the top 30 since 2007, the ranking system has provided me with a decent analysis of my season relative to the other top 30 guys. Would love to crack the top 10 this year. I scored HUGE points for IMSG, like 105, so if I can have a great Kona I should be in there.
