Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swam the 1.2 miles at Jordan Lake. It was definitely choppy out there. Then rode the bike course after. There was definitely a ton of traffic on basically every single rode. More than when I rode it 3 weeks ago. I hope race day will be better. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hope it's not choppy on race day, chickTSW! for you folks who have swum in the lake recently...how does the water temperature feel? The army site says it's 67 degrees, but does it feel that cold? If I recall correctly in past years, that site always reported lower than what the temperature actually felt like. Once I even brought a thermometer and measured it higher (I think 5 degrees, but can't remember exactly). main question: could I go swim for training without a wetsuit without freezing my a$$ off? I loaned mine out to a friend doing Over the Mountain, so won't get it back until right before race. To be honest, I didn't think Raleigh 70.3 would be wetsuit legal, so did not think this would be an issue, lol! Edited by keyone 2013-05-12 8:57 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The water feels warmer than 67, but I'm kind of jaded........I'm used to the 54 that was reported at White Lake Half!!!!! I feel like yesterday could have been done without wetsuit no problem. Also, I agree that traffic shouldn't be as much of an issue on race day......early morning on a Sunday should be much better than a Saturday at High Noon!!!!! |

Carol I'd happily return the one you let me use for IOS100, I picked up a sleeveless last week. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did the OWS this Saturday and rode the first 26mi of the course (out and back from the swim start) on Sunday the 5th from about 10am - 1pm. the 1.2 swim... (56mins - woohoo!!) to me it was cold and felt cold. My body didn't warm up until just before the first turn buoy. I wear a sleeveless wetsuit and found that my hands never warmed up and were kinda numb the whole time. The chop wasn't fun and I did take a bit of water in but not too bad. However, I will have to take Dramamine before the swim because I was just starting to get a bit of motion sickness. I have discovered the older I get the more this is becoming an issue. imho... i do have my reservations about the water jumping 10d in 3 weeks. the highs over the next 10 days will average low 80's with a couple of rain days forecast. alas, wetsuit or not - my butt will be in the water trudging along. the bike... traffic was light the Sunday i did the course. 55 wasn't a whole lot of fun but cars doing 70mph while i am doing 18mph do tend to have that effect on me. This past Saturday the traffic seemed to be at least 4 times heavier than when i rode the course on Sunday about the same time when we will be on the bike course race day. i think we will be ok. it is almost TAPER time. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, my weekend ended poorly. I sprained my ankle yesterday training... three weeks before the race. I've been training a lot for... to say I'm frustrated is putting it lightly. Yesterday after the injury, I barely walked on it. I've been icing the heck out of it, keeping it elevated, and been applying Arnica frequently. Today, I'm on crutches today and am babying the heck out of it. I feel like I could walk "normally" (forward, but not side-stepping) but wanted to let it rest fully today. I'll be icing it when I can. I can point my foot/toes forward and down, but it's the lateral movements that I feel acute pain. I know it would have been a lot worse it I didn't practice yoga. So my question for the BTers.... Do I have any chance of recovering in time? I'm conservative when it comes to recovery and I'm pretty sure I'm not letting my hard-work blind me, but I do feel better a little since yesterday...

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you'll have time to recover. You are taking all the right precautions. Just think of it as a bit of an early taper. Take a look at your log from when you started training for the race. Seeing all of those training miles should tell you that taking a week off or a couple if lighter weeks won't derail the entire race. Remain positive and continue taking care of the injury. |

I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet; got some cool nights coming up, and not too hot days. We may see that trickle back down. More specifically, here is the trend recently:

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mon and Tue cool, then highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s for the rest of the 7-day on WRAL. At least the mid 80s will give us NC residents some time to get used to training in the warmer weather... So what is the WTC cutoff for wetsuits? 76.1 right? This week should be very interesting if the sun shines bright and it doesnt cool off that much overnight. |

So sorry to hear this. Think 'healing vibes'. I know that sounds silly, but do it. It can't hurt and it just might help. Mind over matter type stuff. Also, do the usual rest and ice of course, but as soon as it feels okay, a little light activity. Don't stop swimming or cycling (unless the cycling hurts it more). Walking, maybe a little jogging if it feels okay. How about finding out how to use sports tape to wrap it for extra support? These are the things I am doing to get to the start line in three weeks. I found as soon as I started doing some activities after my injury, I felt tons better. Sitting around causes everything to stiffen up. Good luck! Edited by keyone 2013-05-13 2:53 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, water temp has been 70 for the past two days. Weatherdotcom has highs over 80 every day for the next 10 days and the lowest overnight low is 62. 10 Day forecast gets us to May 24....still 8 days before the race. I would feel confident betting that this race will not be wetsuit legal. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The only guarantee with the weather is that the 10 day forecast is wrong Actually with a lake that size I wonder how fast water temps will rise. I guess we will be able to plot it over the next few days and get a sense of that eh. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just posted over on the official thread but wasn't sure if folks were monitoring both - can anyone tell me how the hills on the bike route compare to Ebeneezer Church Rd over by Umstead Park - My bike route usually involves a few out and backs from NCSU area to the end Ebeneezer Church Rd. Am I am totally planning on at least a 90 degree day - that way I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's any cooler. |
