I noticed that there have been a lot of recent wetsuit purchases in the pod.  I think that it's important to have some background on how wetsuits work.  Sure they add buoyancy and that's handy (especially for certain adult onset swimmers) and the keep you warm but how exactly?

Wetsuits works by keeping an insulating layer of water next to your skin. So wetsuit has to first get wet and you have to warm up the water before it protects you from the cold water.

So, while they do keep you warm, you do still have that initial shock. It also means that if you have a chance to do a warm up swim, that it really helps to fully submerge and dooo eeet!

Thanks, Janyne. I did some more poking around, and I found an OWS clinic about 70 miles from here this Saturday afternoon. I am seriously considering it even though I'll probably spend about three times as long in the car as in the water. lol

Absolutely worth it. I mention it being worth it for a day or even weekend trip here ... and yes I'm trotting out this old tired bag (AND the article ... ) because folks are getting into the first open-water swims of the season, and I need reminding too.

Open-Water Swimming (OWS): MAPS to Get Ready

Hey! I knew swimming with my six year old on Sunday afternoons was good for something.

"Bring friends or family members or children.
This can be during open pool time or if you can get a free lane during lap swimming). Take a couple strokes and as you turn for a breath, have someone do a big splash of water in your face. Try to do this so you are taking a number of strokes and don't know on which breath someone will send a big splash or wave your way." . . . or cannon ball you . . . or pull your leg . . . or jump on your back . . . or throw a ball at you and hit you in the head . . .

Hey! That's just a regular day at my Indonesian-style pool--much like Indonesian-style traffic.

I have, however, listened to that one thing a few times. Hawt. Laughing

Ohhhhh yeah, you guys should 3-way uh, call me Smile

She's British, right? Or does she sound more like an Aussie? Both rank very high in my book. When I am on conference calls with the AUS team I just smile the whole time.

Hi everyone! Wow, I love the fact that this is a chatty group! I do have a question (again, remember for real NOOB here)... I did a spin class yesterday and now my knees hurt. Like my actual patella (front of knee). I'm sitting at my desk at the day job and they have a little throb.Frown I've done spin classes before and have never had this. I did start the 16-week sprint training plan from the site last week, and I did just get back into running (jogging) last month. My settings on the spin bike were good (or so I thought). Could it just be I need to adjust my set-up? Is it just because I'm old and pushing my body right now? I guess I just would like to know is it normal?

Well my sprint for this weekend is cancelled. Terrorism wins this one Cry

Oh no! What happened/who got afraid?

JAY BENSON CANCELLED

Regrettably, due to the Boston Marathon incident and the resulting heightened security at Kirtland AFB, last minute security requirements for civilian entry to the Base have left us no alternative but to cancel the Jay Benson Triathlon.

I would have had an issue with this until I saw that it was on an AFB. I hate to say it, but I gotta agree. I'm sorry TJ, were you doing this one with DS1?

I don't disagree with the decision but it makes me sad. This is one of my faves because it's on the base the run and ride are closed to traffic, part of the ride is along the airport runway (super cool), and it's a serpantine swim in a 50m pool. I also like it because it's Mothers Day so DH and the kid(s) come to spectate then we go do Mother's Day-ish things.

No... DS1 isn't doing tri's... yet.

Agreed. OK, so is the other son, ah man, I can't keep this straight. Which one is Yanti stalking?

I think you are referring to DS2. Do you need a play bill? (I was going to say "dance card," but that didn't seem quite right.)

Mostly I need a fully functioning brain

Sure. Could be all those things. Have you ever actually been fitted to an indoor cycling bike by a knowledgeable instructor? If you go early to a class, they should be able to do that (or arrange in advance to do it). If they look at you like you're from Mars, find a knowledgeable instructor to help you (or we can do a pretty decent descriptive job here). Then remember your settings (either by that specific model of bike or by body landmarks).

The other maxim to remember is try not to do anything on an indoor bike that you wouldn't do on an outdoor one.

And that includes trying to spin at 140 RPM.  Some of those spin classes are crazy on that.

It sounds like the saddle wasn't quite right for you.  See if the instructor can help you adjust your setup.

That being said, I have noticed that if I use the spin bikes at the gym too many days a week, I get aches and pains that I do not get when riding my bike outside.

+1  There are spin instructors and there are aerobics instructors who lead spin classes.  The second group tends to have you do weird things on the bike.  That is where this rule comes in!

Very generally speaking, with an indoor-cycle-knee-issue, the seat is usually too low.

Somewhere in those nearly 50,000allblather posts, there's actually a few about indoor bike fitting. Lemme see if I can dig one up, easier than rewriting it.

So yeah.  We have mentioned it a few times and there is a link in the roster that I created (which you can feel free to copy and paste into your training log) but Chris has kindly set up a Manatee Bike Gallery for all of our bike pjorn.

So, if you have a bike that you want added to the gallery, post it or somehow get a link to Chris and if you are nice, he'll probably add it to the gallery ;-

Ah! Here's a golden oldie!

Here's a shotgun way to fit yourself on the bike

Saddle height -- try hip height first and go from there. With the pedals at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, there should be just a bit of bend in the knee. (almost everybody has their saddle way too low in my experience, and to be frank, my experience is significant as I used to write manuals for and teach Spinning classes at the World Spinning Headquarters.)

Saddle fore/aft -- Knee Over Pedal Spindle (KOPS, that's front of kneecap vertically over the centre of the pedal when your front pedal is at 3 o'clock and the back is at 9 o'clock).

handlebar height -- for you, feel free to try handlebars at saddle height. that's pretty 'aggressive' and if your wrists/elbows/shoulders/neck are okay with it, cool. if not, of course, adjust handlebar height to comfort. remember your elbows should be relaxed.

as for the actual classes--don't be afraid to do your own thing, though you may want to explain to the instructor that while you'll follow the class as much as possible, you're training for endurance races. again, nothing that you wouldn't do on the road. don't crank the resistance so much that your rpm are dropping much below 60, and don't have it so light that you're bouncing in the saddle. good way to ruin your knees either way.

TriAya - 2013-05-06 11:50 AM And just because I get to throw the first furry cuddle pics into this brand-spankin' new thread ...

She looks like she might have some oriental breed in her.  The cat I mean.  Siamese maybe with that pointy face.

Anything's possible. She's straight-up throwaway street cat. Many street kitties here have the pointy face, oversized pointy ears and it seems to me extra-large but almond-shaped eyes, too.

melbo55 - 2013-05-06 2:31 PM And here is the one and only sexeh Rico!!

Oh, another entrant into the Bike Gallery. Man I am backlogged for Tuesday.

My pretty Blue T17 has a cracked frame and I am on a waiting list for a new Triad SL frame.  Was told about 6 weeks (that was a couple weeks ago so maybe a month??)  In the meantime I ride my pretty Sweet Mama road bike a Fuji Roubaix.
