Had another awesome week of training. My plan is starting to ramp up the intensity and in the coming weeks the volume will drop a bit as the intensity continues to increase. I am entering the race prep phase and for the remaining 2 weeks of training, it is going to be all about specificity and intensity.

Swim:  10000.00 M  3h 07m 57s
Bike:  174.00 Mi  9h 09m 33s
Run:  80.00 Mi  10h 20m 49s
Spin: 4h

Total:  26h 39m 19s

A key workout for me was yesterday, where I did a 1 hour swim in the ocean, followed by a 2 hour spin class and then transitioned into a 16 mile run with the last 10 @ IM Pace. I was easily able to hold the pace even with the hills I was running. Training down at the beach just seems to put some great mojo into everything.

Last week was pretty awesome for me:

S: 5050.00 Yd
2h 09m 48s

B: 176.60 Mi
11h 44m 03s

R: 25.43 Mi
5h 15m 44s

I went into the week fairly fatigued as last week was my 4th week of really high volume in a row and I made it through all of my key workouts including an awesome weekend on the course in CDA. This is a rest week for me and I couldn't be happier!

Cantucan - 2011-05-29 8:08 PM I'm having a really really really bad weekend.  Still in the hospital (wrecked my bike on Saturday - entirely my fault, no other vehicles involved).  Broken rib, broken collar bone, collapsed lung, road rash.  At this point the only thing I know for sure is that I won't be doing IMCdA...........Not happy.

I am soooooo very sorry to hear this -- always makes me sad and turns my stomach when I hear about people crashing and crashing badly. I'm VERY GLAD YOU ARE ALIVE and able to communicate with us!! There will always be other years to race, let's hope. Focus on healing your body. Again, really sorry to read this.

Awesome running conditions today for my long run:

87 degrees with full sun

52% humidity

22 mph winds

30 seconds off marathon pace

Knocked out 21 miles.  Terrible conditions.  It felt like I was dying a slow death after mile 17.  Going to run to the gym for a swim and spin class after lunch.

One nasty week left as of today.  I'm looking forward to the taper more than the race.  That's sad.

I think I'm ready for Kona, weather wise.  Today was 5:30 in the seat.  It was 92 degrees with 50% humidity and 24mph sustained winds with 40mph gusts.  WTF is up with this weather?  I had to totally mash the pedals the whole time to hold my target pace.  So much for a Z2/Z3 ride.

Over the last 30 hours I've consumed 800 ounces of water and gatorade.  Only peed twice.  Seems healthy, right?

Our weather in Dallas, SUCKS!!!!

I feel better now.  Party on.

Awesome week!!!!  Jealous.  I'm getting in around 20-22 each week and the weather seems like it is killing my training.  The heat index was 100 today.  You just can train the same in the that kind of weather.  I need to move to Cali.

same conditions as you in ga 3aims. from my blog today:

"Hilly windy 90 degree solo ride from hell. This was the hardest (and slowest) ride I have ever had for the distance. Just roasted even going slow and tending to hydration."

Yesterday was a sweatfest. Pee'd like twice all day despite drinking a keg of water.

Pop-quiz, for those not training with power meters. Let's say you have a Garmin or similar bike computer, and you can only have 2 fields showing while riding, which 2 fields are show going to choose for race day?

HR and Power are the most important -- the rest is data (interesting though).

No power for me, so if only 2 fields total mileage and MPH. Not a slave to HR, prefer RPE on race day, and just like to know how far I've been and what pace I'm going at any given moment. Can keep total time on the watch if necessary.

I'm bummed. We've had super hot, humid weather with 20-50 mph (wtf?) winds every weekend since April. Feb was the last time I did a long weekend ride where the winds were under 20 mph. For three weeks we've had 90-100 degree index temps. I'm not getting the muscle workout I need to do well in CdA. I'm literally going through mild forms of heat stroke during my weekend workouts. My legs feel fine, but my head and heart rate are all jacked. Forecast is the same next weekend. Index near 100 degrees and winds over 20 mph. I give up. Run seems good. Swim is ok. Bike sucks.

HEY SLAYER AND 3 AIMS - GOOD NEWS OUT THERE, i HOPE.  We have been 95-99 here with @ 60% humidity.  I have been having a terrible time on runs as I have posted on Georgia's site and got some help on from Slayer.  However, ran in Lavonia, GA (5 hours north from me) this weekend in temps in the high 80's and had a great day.  21 miles and around 3/4 min faster per mile and ran the whole run.  Felt freaking great after.  So suffer it up guys in training.  If we can be blessed on race day with cooler temps than we have now - we should rock it - if we can manage all the other 1000 mental, physical, and nutritional requirements.  I am hoping the heat will be our "altitude training".

Current HR and Avg. MPH is what I monitor on bike computer.

Today it warmed up to 60. It will probably be 90 on race day and it will be hard to adjust after riding in the 40's and 50's all spring.

I had a pretty good week and ended up taking both saturday and sunday completely off to take my son camping with the cubscouts.   Friday though I was able to take a longer  than usual afternoon run and knocked out a really easy 13 miles at a pace I am pretty proud of these days.  That run actually gave me a total of 53 miles in 6 days.  Whoa.

Today was my birthday, so I did a really nice oly distance brick.  Wore my race gear and everything is working as it should.  Best part was that I was a good 20 minutes faster than my last oly race.

Here's last weeks breakdown:

Swim:  8000 yards

Bike:  80 miles (no long ride, which was a nice change)

Run:  32.5 miles

Current speed and cadence.  Current speed just because I'm constantly curious how fast I'm going.  Cadence because I find if I shift as necessary to keep the cadence around 90, I can take the what the course gives me through the uphills, downhills and flats to maintain a fairly even effort.  If I can show a third on there (which mine does), it would be HR.

Got way behind on the thread back in early April when I had a really sad day... went on a super-duper easy run with my dog and my 11-year-old son on the trails and took a fall, into a lunge position. Felt a pop and a shooting pain in my hamstring. Ouch. Long story short is that I tore my hamstring (split it) and started a nice, slow road of re-hab and recovery. Took about 10 days off from running, worked with a PT, then built back up starting with 2 min run/1 min walk for :30. I have been super duper patient and am thrilled that my long run this week was 2:15. Not quite where I want to be time-wise and speed-wise, but darn it, I'm still healing and getting better and I'll be able to race. Happy that I had a solid run base this winter (200 miles in December) -- that has helped with mental confidence if nothing else.

Ouch! Sorry that happened.  I'm sure your CdA plans were flashing before your eyes.  Glad to hear you've been able to make your way back while bringing the great attitude along for the ride!

Hi all,Thanks for the many kind words and well-wishes. I'm still in the hospital but hope to get out later today......and begin the long road to recovery.. In the meantime, I'd like to see if anyone would be interested in taking over the condo lease that I have lined up. It's a great deal and a great location (<1/2 mile to the start). I've already paid the deposit, so if I can get someone to reimburse me for that the owner would let you have it on the same conditions. To make a long story short, here is her original description (below). Let me know if you are interested as soon as possible. Thanks, Randy Cantu excuse the lack of formatting, I'm on my iPad and i haven't quite figured out how to format text yet.... "It is really a townhouse, in a small complex  (40 units) in about 8 separate buildings, with lots of grass and trees between.  There is a small pool and hot tub.   The complex is fenced and gated; it is safe and quiet, yet very close to downtown (walking distance to city park and beach). The unit itself has 2 large bedrooms (both have queen beds) upstairs along with shower bathroom.  Washer and dryer are upstairs as well.  Main floor is very open, with kitchen, eating area and living room.  There is a gas fireplace and small deck off the living room, also a half bath on this main floor. The basement is in process of being finished....there is another shower bath and another large room.  The unit has central air conditioning.  There are 2 assigned parking spaces, one covered, and plenty of guest parking available throughout the complex.Rental rate for one or two people is $200 per night with a minimum of 5 nights.  Up to 2 additional people could be accommodated for an additional amount,  I would like a deposit of $250 as soon as possible and then another $250 by March first.  The rest would be collected when you arrive.  I would also take a security deposit check at that time of $500, which will not be cashed and returned to you within a week of your departure."

I like the looks of this!! I am starting my long runs at 4 in the morning and it is already about 90degrees with 50-60% humidity. By the time we finish it is usually getting close to 100 degrees!
Training is great here through the winter but this time of year it's a killer!

Had an interesting weeekend.  Saturday went and cleaned up tornado damage for 4 hours.  Mostly moving cut down trees into trucks. Very sad to see how much damage some people have suffered.  Glad I could help in a very small way.

Yesterday, ran a very tough 10k that I've been trying to break 50 min on for about 2 years.  There's about 400-500 foot climbing and it was hot.  Was thinking I could do about 47, but ended up at 49 flat.  So I was pretty happy.

But to really cap off the weekeend, my 6 year old and I ran the subsequent 5k in 37 min.  I was stoked, she was stoked.  She has run them before but always was pretty whiny.  This time, it was nose down, cranking the miles out.  I had set my garmin to do intervals of 1/4 mile run, 1 min walk.  That, plus the jelly beans during the rest intervals, worked perfectly.

Then my 4 year old and I ran the 1 mile fun run.  She busted out a 10:57 mile.  She was smiling the entire way and only asked to walk twice.

Very proud of both of my daughters.

Had an ok week of training. I just really wanted to sleep all the time, and didn't have motivation, so I did back off a bit more than I had planned, but it's better to be under trained than over trained. I leave on Wednesday for a tri camp down in AK. It will be some good open water swims, and hills and some fun times with other IMCdA people!

Swim- 6,000 yards 2h20m

Bike-100 miles 5h45m

Run- 15 miles 3h

11h 5m total hours of training

Have about 13 hours scheduled with this camp this week, so that should be good! 26 days!!! OMG!
