Sounds like a 2 hour trainer ride is the thing to do today.  I took yesterday as my off day and did a 2 hour ride this morning after a very poor night of sleep.  I cannot believe how much benefit I got from shifting my seat forward around an inch and adjusting the angle.  I still had moments of discomfort, but could adjust out of it.  The ride went well.

Question 1: Powertap vs Garmin distances seem to be very off.  My Garmin was set to 2100 circumference not the standard 2094 or whatever it normally is.  I changed it to that value after the workout.  My 310 said 31.62 miles, PT said  36.25.  This seems like quite the difference.

I held 205 average watts over the entire ride, so not quite the 260 FTP I had calculated, but it was a long ride that said z2-z3 which would have taken me up to 220 watts.

I will probably hop on the treadmill for a short recovery run this evening during the game.  We bought some Papa Murpheys cheese bread along with some poppers and cheese sticks to root on the Vikings tonight.

Finally my weight this morning without working out yesterday was the lowest it has been since starting to keep track this spring, and I felt amazing.  165 lbs, hopefully can trim down a few more before the season starts.

Nutrition/hydration question:

I did my weekly winter indoor tri workout today -- 22 min in the pool, 45 min on a spinning bike, 35 min run on the treadmill.  One thing I was testing today was my sweat rate for purposes of calculating my hydration/nutrition plan for the longer races.

I weighed myself before the workout holding my waterbottle with the fluid that I intended to consume.  I then weighed myself on the same scale after the workout also holding the waterbottle, which was empty at that point.  Difference:  4.25 lbs.  This surprised me.  I expected 2 or 3 lbs, not 4.25.

In terms of calculating sweat rate and therefore hydration needs, I assume that I calculate this workout as a about 1.70 hours - i.e. 1 hour 42 minutes, which is the cumulative total of all three pieces.

If so, that would suggest that I sweat 2.5 lbs per hour.  (2.5 lbs per hour times 1.7 hours equals 4.25 lbs)  Assuming that 16oz=1lb., that means that I lose 40oz of water in sweat per hour.

Am I doing this calculation correctly?  Do I include the swim portion, as I have in the above calculation?  Does this seem high (at least it does to me)?  Any other thoughts/reactions?

Thanks as always for the input.

Hey William--My advice, get naked.....start with no clothes on, weigh in, do a one hour run or bike taking into consideration how much fluid you ingest, get naked again and weigh in...your sweat rate for running is probably different from biking.  The whole no clothes thing is to make sure you get rid of those sweaty clothes which probably weigh more.    I don't think your sweat rate is all that outrageous, but over 2% will affect your performance.

The rest of you look like you had great training weeks...way to go!!!

Kim--load up on gels!

Doug--make sure you keep the work up on that adductor.  I am traveling with a guy who strained his playing tennis and he is hobbling around alot.

Getting ready to head to cocktails and dinner after a good day at the pool!

i'm a beat up sob!  58 mile ride.  ~75% of the ride was into the wind or it was coming across me.  it better not be like this at lone star or i will throw my bike in the ocean.  from my logs....

wind sustained 20 gusting to 30. i was pretty much on my own past 17 miles. at one point i was going down a slight incline HR was 160 (huge for me) and i was doing 8 mph. but then at the turnaround i was busting out 25 and HR was around 115.

John, there is ALWAYS wind for Lonestar.  Hopefully though it will start in the afternoon.    Nice job getting out there today it's been WINDY all day.

thanks!  i know i know.  freakin' g-town.  at least last year it waited until the run.

Hey now...No one said anything to me about WIND down there.

Suzy:  thanks.  I actually had done it naked.  I neglected to put that fact in my post because I assumed that somone arond here might ask for pics.  And let me assure you, non of you guys actually wants to see such a pic.

Assuming that my sweat rate is different on teh bike and the run, what rate should I use for a half-iron?

Thanks.

Sounds great! My tri club is supposed to have an indoor tri but I don't know when yet. Beware of donuts and chocolate bagels.
Suzy don't worry too much about us, have fun in the sun! Thanks for the infinit code guys!

This weekend I moved my tri bike onto the trainer (had my roadie there all season). I signed up for a 5K Feb 7, got acceptance letter for NYC 1/2 Mary March 21. Yesterday I did a fun crossfit class (which I find to be really fun strength training) and a run, today 20 miles on the trainer. I hope everyone had a good weekend.

kickitinok - 2010-01-24 5:22 PM

I'm excited. I'm signing-up for my first mini-sprint tomorrow. Downtown Oklahoma City YMCA is having their "Chili Day Multisport Festival" in the beginning of March - the 6th to be exact. 300m swim, 8 mile upright stationary bike, and 2 mile run. I could do that right now.

I told my husband no more chocolate donuts are to be brought into the house. I ate two. I had horrible self-loathing afterwards.

I'm thinking that I need to start strength training...for multiple reasons, the biggest being that I need to lose some fat. Next is having some add'l strength will surely help me in my swim and bike....and probably run.

Is your Garmin using gps for distance or do you have some sort of magnet like a regular bike computer?Did you do the wheel measurement thingy? I would guess that is the culprit, also make sure you set it in your powertap as well.Though I would personally have the garmin use gps for distance. How did you set up your PT to collect data, the default isn't 1 second but that is what you should do from what I have read. There are a few other settings that you should change also but not sure what they are off the top of my head, might be in the coggan/hunter book.If you export your ride from the PT to csv you can look through it and see the entire ride, look for how many 0's you have in the watts column, coasting will hurt your average watts, since no power.

Hey William--I would figure out your sweat rate for the run and the bike and then estimate how long you think it will take you to do each for the HIM.  I usually don't even think about sweat rate for a swim.  You will need to adjust this some depending on temperature et al.  From what I have read it is really hard to ingest any more than 80% of the loss. In case your liquid has calories, from what i have read you are really only able to ingest 30-50% of what you lose to the blood shunting away from gut to your working muscles.

In case anyone is interested, I just finished reading an interesting book by Bob Seebohar regarding teaching your body to more readily burn fat for fuel.  I did some of that as a marathoner, but Steve turned me away from it for triathlon.  Going to test it out again as a way to reduce GI issues associated with ingesting a lot of calories for long distance events which are hard for this old body to digest.

Had another really fun dinner.  Always good when you pick the right end of the table for a long meal.  Happy Monday everyone!

Way to go. Signing up for that first race is a big step. I know you will do awesome as long as that evil huhsband of yours doesn't start bringing in boston cream donuts.

I hav added strength training through the boot camop slasses I am taking. One important thing to note about boot training instructors... They are sadists I'm sure of it. I had a new instructor on Saturday and I still can't get a cup of coffe to my mouth or even scratch my nose with my right arm. The tricep is so tight and sore its all but impossible. If you think that's funny try brushing your teeth or shaving with your opposite hand. Very uncomfortable and dangerous when youdon't use and electric razor.

Outside of the difference in the wheel value they should be setup the same.  I had set the PT to the proper size, 1 second recording etc.

The garmin uses a magnet on the rear wheel.  Unfortunately I was on the trainer so it should have been fully computing from the speed/cadence sensor. It looks like the 310 can just read info from the PT hub as well, so I may just remove the garmin unit, then I could put the Garmin sensor back on my wifes bike, although she has not noticed its gone.  I assume the LYC is computing cadence based on the hub, at most I have only noticed it being 1 rpm different and that is very rare.

Good morning everyone.  Glad to see so many successful training weekends.  I was even able to sneak out there.  Okay, feedback time.....

Glen - flip turns - I can't seem to NOT get water up my nose so I don't do them!   Personally I enjoy the extra breath that open turns allow me. And unless you are a very accomplished swimmer ( meaning you'll be one of the first ones in the water) I don't think a flip turn in a pool sprint will help that much.  Mainly b/c people get very congested in the pool and most of the time people are waiting at the walls for others to pass them or to move under the rope into the next lane.  Also,  most of my races are open water.  Don't worry about it. Learn them if you want to but don't feel you have to by any means.

Kyla - here is a link with instructions on cleaning the chain/bike.  I use the CM cyclone chain srubber unit and it works great.  http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=85

Trina - super excited about your YMCA sprint.  Can't wait to hear all about it!!!

William - My first reaction is caution in making comparisions between sweating rates indoors and outdoors.  Are you usually a heavy sweater?  Will your races be very hot?  Be sure to factor in electrolyte intake along with the fluids.  And you should stop ingesting calories in the last 30 minutes of the bike - only water.  This helps your body absorb the calories and aides your GI track for the run.

Rob - Cry

So yesterday I went to a *gasp* public pool, where Sam normally swims.

It was as bad as I have read.

I got in a lane there were already 2 people in it so had to circle swim, 2 more people joined in, then I got out,  5 is too many in a lane for me, impossible to do drills with that many people in the lane, it was supposed to be a "fast" lane, I was catching everyone and I am far from fast.

So I go play with the kids in the other pool while sam does her laps.

Before we leave the lap swim area somewhat clears up, so I can split a lane with someone, we are good.  He gets out and various randoms keep joining.  One guy swam a few laps with his what appeared to be 3 year old on his back...

At one point I had a basketball floating in my lane, swim instructors sending students walking across my lane.

Got kicked 3-4 times by someone in my lane.

I am going back to my nice quiet, lap swimmer only pool at work this week....

Hey I always view swimming at the public pool like a contact sport.  it's good prep for OWS.  Our mistake yesterday was hitting the pool at free senior swim time.  I had my a$s smacked, temple whacked, arm grapped and repeated kicked in the leg.  But so you hear me complaining.  Suck it up buttercup.

Evil husband made brownies last night!

I was sitting at my computer when I heard sinister laughter coming from the kitchen. Minutes later the smell of brownies was wafting throughout the house. I had a tiny corner piece. Husband is now banned from bringing any sugar into the house, or risks being sent upstairs to sleep.

Seriously though....I think he's feeling a bit insecure. He keeps telling me my body is looking good (he's nearly blind), and he doesn't want to be alone in his moderate obesity. I feel sorry for him Anyone have advice on how they've handled a similar situation with their spouse? Training for a Tri is out for him as his knees are blown from basketball when he was younger.

Trina,  Can he ride a bike still?  Perhaps train for a bike ride or aqua bike?  Your larger races sometimes have this option.  May get him involved in a cool down walk with you after your runs.  It would help him get out of the house and be a part of your training.

Good Luck!

Trina,  Can he ride a bike still?  Perhaps train for a bike ride or aqua bike?  Your larger races sometimes have this option.  May get him involved in a cool down walk with you after your runs.  It would help him get out of the house and be a part of your training.

Good Luck!

Yeah I was going to suggest bike or swim also.

Sam and I are pretty lucky that we both do this, not sure how you all work it out with spouses/significant others.

For me when I started to loose some weight( from training and food control) my wife got on board with the 'eating better as a family.' So she started to do that as well, but stayed away from the physical activity side of it.
Eventually, she got on board. Nothing I could say or do would get her on board until she was ready......
I do think once she started to see how chiseled her husband's body was becoming, she had no choice...

It is a hard situation no doubt.

Trina-I think my dad used to do the same thing to my mom if she started losing weight...is it possible that you could do some relays together?  Maybe you swim and run let him bike just so he has some fun as you continue to progress.  You could also do bike events together.  I got Paul to do a few of those....he would never swim and hates to run more than a couple of miles.

Doug--why did Tracy say poor Doug? You aren't injured, right?  I thought your long run went really well.....say it did!

Rob--Tracy told me to have sex on the beach so perhaps she wins the naughty crown of the day .  Of course, I had to tell her that was sooooo yesterday .

Think of the most mind numbing thing you did this morning....for me it was 95 minutes on an elliptical machine trying to get my HR into Z2 while sweating way more than William's 4lbs.  Blech......cannot wait to be able to run.

Off to the pool.

Relays are an option at almost all events as well...
