Is it Wednesday???  Then it must be "LAY OUT YOUR RACE PLANS" day!  Who's ready to rock a run or a tri????

For the rest of us yearning to do something fun, tell us about your favorite S, B or R drill..why do you like it and what do you think it has done for you?

No racing this weekend.

Favorite drills are track workouts.  I like Yasso's 800s - start w/ 4 800s w/ a 400 recovery then build up to 12 800s over a few months.  I think this is a great way to gauge progress and build speed/stamina.  I did a lot of these when I was getting ready for one of my marathons.  I also love picking out the various workouts from Runner's World.  They also have speed workouts in each issue and it is fun to mix things up.  I don't do that so much now since I have a coach but I used then all the time before.

No racing for me either!  Streets are like an ice rink around here.

My least favorite, but most productive drill is high cadence spin ups (slowl increasing my cadence over 1 minute to maximum effort and then holding it there for as long as possible).  I believe doing those increased my spinscan numbers into the mid 70s for my left leg and low 80s for my right which is all about pedaling efficiency.  It has also taught me how to have even weight distribution between my left and right leg...before my right leg was the lazy one, carrying about 47% of the load.

SoccerGK - 2011-02-22 5:31 PM I had the worst run in a LONG time this morning.  I did a swim right before it.  Is this the reason?  Nothing else different today besides the timing of my workouts.

Do you swallow air when you swim?  Last year I tended to gulp air and a lot went into my stomach which caused a lot of pain post swim.  I cannot imagine running after it.

This is definitely possible, but I have no idea if I do or not.  My swimming still is giving me a hard time.  I truly do think I need at least one session with a coach to see what I'm doing wrong.

How do I know if I'm swallowing air?

No racing!  It's probably as icy here as in Madison!

I don't really do drills at all.  I don't really know many!  But I did like Jorge's maintenance plan, it works wonders!

No racing here. One of my new favorite drills is the one arm swim drill. It has finally made bi-lateral breathing a real possibility for me!

I just thought of 2 other drills that I hate but they are awesome for progress.

B - Single leg drills - suck a*s - but they are good for identifying holes in your pedal stroke and buidling leg strength.  When that happens to me, I'll let you know.  ;-)

S - head long drill - great for balance.  Float face down, arms at your side.  Kick very gently down and back.  Without moving your arms, bring your head up for air and sink then float back to the surface.  45 min of this and one arm out kicking on your side (again no strokes) and I am swimming like a champ.  I just have to figure out a way to keep that balance after 100m of swimming.  After that and it all falls apart.

No racing for me. Good luck to anyone who does get to race this weekend!

My favorite drill is the catch-up drill for swimming. It's great for learning or practicing a long reach and good side roll for a strong, smooth stroke. I do catch-up drill during all my cool-downs because my right arm gets lazy and drops on the reach when I'm tired, and catch-up helps me focus on fixing that.

No racing for me.

And I would have to say that my favorite drill is the Makita 18V cordless with a Lithium battery.
It is lightweight, very strong and hold a charge well.

No racing... But I do have my second PT appointment this morning.

Did swim last night and will see but probably a light spin tonight. Pain is gone in my leg. But the Patellra area is still tight. I am supposed to learn how to tape that today.

Well Second PT appointment done. More work for me to do. But Sadly I am NOT allowed to run for a while. The term a while is yet to be determined... could be 2 weeks could be 2 months. The more time he spent with me today the more he realized my MCL has cause a lot of weakness in certain areas and also made other muscle groups over work to compensate.

I have a lot of balancing work to do as well as Obliques, and Glutes. I have to strenghen these areas so that my weak MCL does not allow my left leg to rotate inward and cause issues with my tendons in my knee. These are stress items due to the over rotation of my weak hip, weak knee and inside quad.

Just have to put my head down do my exercises, Add some P90X core work and some light spinning. IE steady pace spinning, no interval work on spinning for now. I have to make the most out of swim nights I guess. Maybe slide in for an extra swim at the YMCA and pay the 10 bucks each Sat to swim a third day and keep my work outs up.

I have been told NO aqua jogging even for now because my IT, Patellra and calf are still a bit tight.

Keep at it.  You will not regret making the changes or stepping back a bit.  in 09/10 I was off running for 5 straight months with a stress fracture and I lived to see a pretty good '10 season.  You will too.

No race this weekend.  As for the drills,  someone give me something good for the bike.  I am new at this and only average about 15mph on a 20 mile ride.  I look at all of these other times and you are all up arounnd 18 to 20.  What can I do to increse speed?

My advise on this is learn how to use your gears to their maximum efficiency and just keep riding.  As with all other sports speed takes time but remember this is triathlon, not bike racing.  A smoking fast bike ride and bonked run doesn't = a successful race.  Learn how to maximize your speed while conserving your energy and it will all fall into place.

As far as favorite drills - I'm with Sam on this one.  Single leg drills are awful but have a large payoff.  (at least that is what I tell myself when I am suffering through them).    Also found short speed drills to be surprisingly helpful on the run.  They remind my body that it can run faster than my endurance speed without bursting.

First of all, don't look at other people's speed.   Some of us are inside riding CTs or trainers and those numbers can be misleading.  I can push 90W and show a speed of 20mph.  If I did that outside, it would be a very different story.

Second, it's kind of hard to answer the question.  I looked at your logs, but because your new it's tough to see what you've been doing and for how long.   For me, it was a combination of consistently longer rides and then as I became more comfortable with those, I began to add "some" intensity (z3).  Flash forward a couple of years and now intensity (z3/4/5) is an equally important part of my plan.  Like running or swimming, I think you need to build a level of endurance before you can really focus on speed.

I agree completely.  Some of my highest MPH rides are my recovery rides since I ride with almost no resistance.  Hill workouts are the toughest but probably the slowest speeds.

As far as gettting faster, get on your bike more, put in the miles.  As suzy said, work in the harder rides, those will help get you there faster.

No races.  My current favorite swim drill is the hip rotation drill -- first half of this video.  I like it because after I do it, everything else seems to click, i.e., my rotation, my pull, my breathing.  Unfortunately, it only clicks for a couple laps.

Who's racing? Me! Although I'm not feeling very confident with all the holes in my training this last month. As for strategy, just find a groove and hold it as long as possible.

Re drills; what are they? Jk, sort of. Like Suzy mentioned needing a good base before doing z4/z5 work I feel like I am still working on my base. Actually, this leads me to a question, if you are following a plan for a particular A race, do you integrate drills into the plan or just follow the plan religiously?

oh, and brief update after my Drs appt, I'm getting a renal and pelvic ultrasound. Fingers crossed.

Hi all!

Back to reality.  But happy to be home and reunited with the pooch...and hopefully back to a normal sleep schedule!  Goodness, I have not stayed up past midnite 3 days in a row since pulling late nites back in college.  Four days with no workouts felt kind of nice, but I feel re-energized and ready to get right back at it.

Good luck to you, Christina!  Hope the race goes well for you.

Sorry to hear about your setback, Chris, but it sounds like you've got a handle on things.

Erica, so glad you are going to run the 5k with your mom.  What a terrific opportunity for the both of you!  Chances like these are so special.

Drills?  I love our Makita 18V cordless, too, Barry.

But I loveeeeeee  single leg drills for cycling.  Last year around this time I was hating that drill and remember asking on this group about the dead spots in my left leg compared to my right leg with that drill.  I used to only last about 30 seconds before hitting the dead spot with my left leg whereas my right leg could go for the full minute or more.  Nowadays, I am pretty even with both legs. And no more dead spots.   I try to keep the same cadence throughout the full minute on both legs without adjusting the gearing or tension or load on the trainer.

For running, two of my favorite warm up drills that are really good before any of my track or fartlek type workouts are the kick butt drill and exaggerated skipping.  I am not exactly sure why they are so good for us, but for me, I feel like it really warms up my hip flexors and gets me ready for faster leg turnover and staying on the ground for as little time as possible.
