I personally haven't found these to be all that helpful. When I started them I did have a dead spot around 6 o'clock, but it was consistent riding and thinking about pushing forward and pulling back that helped me, not the drill itself. I am lucky to have a CT and use spinscan. I have been pretty religious on working to improve those numbers, but using both my left and right leg at the same time. If I look at my single leg SS#s they are still poor, but I have no dead spots. And since I ride with two legs, not one, I say heh! Yes, I do them on the plan, but only because someone told me to. As a beginning rider, I am not sure the value would be worth the time spent. That's why I defer to those with more experience. Make sense? Is that your dream home and one of your GA home boys? MY 2 cents: I think for those of us without the CT, single leg drills are essentially the equivalent of what you get on the CT. The info you can pull off the CT Spinspan tells you leg power, balance, etc doesn't it? Without a CT, you have to rely on the deadspots to learn where you are losing power, etc. Not disagreeing. All I can say is from my experience I was not able to improve my spinscan numbers doing SLDs. I was able to improve the numbers by consciously making small tweaks and then watching the numbers to see if they improved. For me, getting the two legs was the most important, but now that I have that nailed, I'm working on getting that circular pedal stroke perfected. I will tell you that I have no dead spots and my single leg SS #s still SUCK! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Masters today and of course we did the 3/5/7/9 drill AND our coach is incorporating more butterfly (why?why?why?). I'm still dying by 7... how do you all manage your exhale on the longer sets (7 or 9)? slowely exhale throughout or hold your breath until you're about 2-3 strokes from breathing and then exhale? I tried both and it seems the latter is more managable for me, but still freakin hard!@! |

I tried both and it seems the latter is more managable for me, but still freakin hard!@! I for one don't push it. If I was doing a fast set, I wouldn't do the 7/9 breath stroke. When I start, I exhale slowly, then stop for a few strokes, then exhale again slowly, then stop until the 7th/9th stroke. I'm able to do 25m without taking in a breath. It's the matter of how much you're exhaling. If you exhale too much, it won't work. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Friday Peeps. Been AWOL this week. Spent last weekend and the beginning of the week skiing with the family. Then flew to Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon for work. Now sitting in an airport in Lexington waiting for a flight to Detroit where I will likely have to spend the night since there is lots of snow at home and it is still snowing. Hopefully if I do get stuck, I will be able to get home tomorrow. Training took a hit this week...just a couple of short runs on the crappy treadmill at the hotel. Sounds like to I will get to get some exercise shoveling snow this weekend! Congrats to all those getting new bikes and new jobs! Is there some Nike discounts in the MG future?!?!? If anyone is racing this weekend, good luck! |

I tried both and it seems the latter is more managable for me, but still freakin hard!@! Slowly exhale and then hold your breath for the last 2-3 strokes. MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT KICKING TOO MUCH!!! You will never be able to sustain that breathing pattern if you are using your legs a ton. My college coach ALWAYS had us doing those drills during pull sets, and that is how I continue to do them. Yes, they are hard. At least when you are on 9, you can do a cheater breath in and out of the turns so usually you only have to do 9 strokes once per lap... Or that's how this slacker sees it, ha ha!! Flying home from Arizona today, boo. Been a nice visit, kids have been good, been able to have a decent week of training (missed my intensity with the trainer and the track, but it's all good). Can't wait to sit on the plane with my book!!! Oh, and looking forward to seeing the hubs, dog, and cat, in that order. Happy to get back to my shower, too, cuz my shower ROCKS. Happy Friday to all!! |

Happy trails, Kyla! Oddly, I had that 3,5,7,9 thing today at masters....weird coincidence. It was only for 25 at a time with rest so it was doable. I could not do 7 or 9 last year for the life of me, but today, even though it was hard, I focused on not kicking and just taking it easy and I was able to do it without dying at the end. I did little exhales along the way and then a big exhale before taking my breath. Made 3 and 5 feel easy. Also noticed I could work on my rotation when not turning for a breath every stroke! Have a great day, MGer's. |

Hahaha, if I could, I would! Cool thing is that the woman I interviewed with is in the "emerging markets" contract area, so I'm certainly going to talk to her about the possibility of getting into the tri world! And I don't know yet if Nadie will even be coming with me out there. We have to see what our housing situations will be, first. Ryan will be staying in Wisconsin and moving to Fond du Lac so he'll be closer to work, and then when I come back to Wisconsin for my last (!) semester of law school next spring, I will have to commute 1.5 hours each way from FdL, but only for a few months. The rest is still up in the air! |

What is the purpose behind this drill? Is it to teach you to relax your stroke more or to be able to hold your breath longer under difficult conditions (like the turn buoy points in a race)? |

![]() | ![]() Well doing all my physio work outs. Missed swimming due to work... GRRRR I did get out cross country skiing for a tiny bit today. Mostly to get out, no impact on my knee. I kept it braced just incase. I have to keep working on my physio. Hoping to get into some other stuff might try some P90X yoga or stretching this weekend... to keep it light or hit just my upper body on my weight bench. Pools won't allow one lane this weekend for lane swim. ![]() But it has only been 5 days since I buggered my knee. Who knew sitting around would drive me nuts but it is. A year ago I would have begged to sit around and do nothing.... Now I am not sure how I did it for so many years.....LOL |

![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Holy wow! I just swam in a 25 meter pool for the first time, and it was so weird compared to my 25 yard pool! I got to swim with Ryan at the Y here in town for the first time in a LONG time, and it's cool to see how far each of us has come on our own, but it was REALLY nice to have him around to encourage me and tell me what I should work on. I felt pretty good overall, but I still haven't perfected rotation. My bilateral breathing is FINALLY doing pretty well, so I'm excited! I need to find a pool in Portland for the fall because I do not want to lose any swim fitness while I'm there! |

Back to the pool on Monday. Plan has me coming off a really light week, which has felt great on the body and legs, backing off a little in B & R, just a little, and into the pool 3 times next week. Should be interesting to see how fast the swim form returns, coaches are telling me less than 3 weeks! Need to get ready to rock Knoxville...11 weeks and counting Peeps!!! Congrats on the new bike....we need bike porn when it arrives! Congrats on the new job..... Enjoy the weekend. It can stop snowing any time now.....really....we have enough.... really...it can stop...we all know how to shovel....really....PLEASE!!! |

Knee was just a bit stiff at the end... Advil and Ice now. Not for pain as much as precaution. hope everyone is having a GREAT weekend. |
