when I first looked at this graph it got me worried but the elevation numbers looked better than the graph or at least less intimadating.
Since your avg speed is what my goal is, how fast were you going on the (true) flats and how much the climb slowed you down.
I am trying to find a similar elevation gain around here to train on with no luck.

Don't want to step on your question.  My average speed?   To answer the question, I honestly don't know because I only had HR and elapsed time, no speed on any computer.  Coming "downhill" back into town is much faster than going out.  So you sort of work it going out, hammer it coming back

One thing I noticed, I dropped to the small ring going out even on the first loop on the Beeline.   Lots of folks were still in the big ring.  Each of my loops were within a few minutes of eachother so I moderated effort pretty well I thought

I was just wondering if it is a constant slight incline or are there a number of flats along the way.  Just the thought of 10 miles of constant uphill makes me a little nervous.  I am a pretty decent cyclist but the long uphills can get to my asthma after a while.

Looking forward to an awesome experience.  Less than 8 weeks to go!

I have done IMAZ 2 times now and the climb is very gradual.  I think I was between 16-18 mph on the way up and much faster coming back.  Now, what is the news on the dams?  Lastly, what has everyone been doing training wise!

I will go first, last week my big swim was 4100 straight in open water, 14 mile long run, and an 80 mile bike followed by 6 miles running at race pace.  Chime in here!

You won't even notice you are ging uphill untill halfway up the Beeline going out of town.  Most of the "in town" streets are basically flat.

Nice job! I did a 2.4 open water swim in Saguaro Lake (about 25 mi north of Tempe), a tough 12 mile trail run, and a 100 mile ride w/ ~11,000 ft of climbing   I live about 2 miles away from Tempe Town Lake and I drive past it every day.  It looks like they are making great progress on in it.  I heard from a friend that they are right on schedule

@markdills38- I see that you are trying to qualify this year at IMAZ. I wish you luck! You had a great race in 08.

I have to say, I'm not sure I like the direction of this thread....you're starting to freak me out a bit. In combination with the "It is harder than you think" thread in the IM Distance forum, I'm beginning to lose my mental edge here. Is a 100 mile bike with 11,000 feet of climbing in 105 degree heat "normal?" Please PLEASE say no. If that is what it takes to do this race, I'm toast...will call the airlines now and see if I can salvage any residual value on my canceled ticket! Seriously.....

:-)

Hope everyone is having a good "peak month" before heading into taper mode here in several weeks.

Keep on keeping on.

HAHA... NO WAY is this normal. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do something like this It's also my 2nd IM.  Last year my goal was just to have fun and finish, but I really want to put up a good time this year.

as far as my training goes...
The swim is a little behind, i am doing about  3K twice a week but I don't worry too much about the swim leg.  I should be doing closer to 4 K
The bike:  126 miles weekend rides at faster than race pace, and 60 mile wednesday rides at top speed.  I feel good on the bike
The run: i am behind on this.  i am doing 11 miles fairly easy at 10 minute/mile.  I would like to at least do 15 miles once a week but time is getting to be an issue.

I feel good,  I just have to stay healhty for a few more weeks

Nice for you as well!   hills in Phoenix?  JK I don't know how you and Briancd run in that damn heat out there.  My brick was in 95 degree heat and it about killed me.  You are a stud..  Yeah, let's see how the next few weeks shape up to see if I can come close to under 10 hours.  Last year the last spot was 9:37  I will not be there for sure.  Anyway, nice training! And thanks!

This weekend I have a 90 or so mile ride followed by a 45 minute run on Sat and then Sunday is a 45 minute spin followed by a 2 hour run, probably around 14 miles on the run.  The following weekend I have a HIM In New Jersey as a practice race.  Hoping to do pretty well there.

I am following the program from the book BeIronFit and it seems to be working out fairly well.  My only complaint is that it seems like they moved pretty slow building during the first half of the program and now they are really bumping things up a bit too quickly.  I know the beginning is base building but I think they took it a little too slow and now they are killing me.  Too many little annoying injuries popping up.

Just need to stay healthy for the next 8 weeks to Rock and Roll

Then ease up alittle bit on the intensity so as not to get hurt....  You are getting to that point that you are "set" already and pushing harder and longer only risks injury and fatigue....

Training is going well.  No nagging injuries (knock, knock).  My "big" rides/runs are still around the corner.

My longest bike to date is 78 miles. I plan to hit 85-90 this weekend.

My longest run was 15 miles with around 2500 ft elevation gain.  I plan to do a flat 16 miler this weekend.

My swim's have been consistent of 4000-4100 at master's swim three times a week.

Haha... There ARE hills in AZ I actually just hired the same coach as bryancd (last May) so Bryan and I have become good friends this year and he's helped me out a great deal with my training.  9:37 will be tough, but I believe you are fully capable seeing your 10:06 finish in '08.  As for me, I still have a few more years of solid training to get there  I'm definitely stronger than last year but I need a 9:35 and I'm a good 45 minutes away  Wishing you the best of luck in the final weeks of your training.

I was just in Arizona this weekend to train on the course.  I did this race in 2008.  The lake is still pretty empty.  Three of the bladders looked like they where install but not inflated.  The lake did have more water in it that all of the picture I have been seeing online.  I heard that they started letting some water in to test the bladder's and there was leak...not confirmed, this is just what I heard.  I was told that they are still on track to get in done and filled by 11/1.

Although there aren't any hills in this race the small incline combined with the head wind going up Bee Line Hwy makes it much harder than you would think.

I agree, the headwinds going north on the Beeline can be tough. The wind has been calm the past two November races.  I heard some of the April races were real windy though.  I train on the Beeline regularly and it seems to be hit or miss with the wind.  It can be especially windy during monsoon season.

I did this race in April 2008 when the wind and temperature made Beeline going out a challenge. It became more of a mental game than anything knowing you had to do it 3 times. Hopefully wind and heat will not be a factor this November. Other than going up Beeline the rest of the course is cake.

What has been your experience on the run course? Is it a fairly challenging course? Hilly?  Is it run mostly on ashphalt?

Mostly concrete, bike path type stuff.  A little bit of crushed rock trail, some grass to the side you can run on.  Only "hills" are those on bridges going over the lake, and one fairly decent hill on the backside (of course, right before the photog.)  The bridges wouldn't be considered hills on any day other than IM day, but they add up, little by little

Yep, it's flat as you can see on the course profile.

It's funny that you mention the photographer at the top of Curry (the "hill").  I see a lot of people walking this section and then begin to run again to look good for the camera

You must have been following me.  I walked up that hill every lap...  once with a guy talking to his 90 year old mom on his cell, said he called her every Sunday and couldn't miss one.....
