I'm staying at TownePlace Suites in Carlsbad/Vista.  Waking up early is half the fun.

Who all is coming to the meet up Saturday? Chris? Brittany? I know you both said you were considering it.  It looks like clear skies for the preview ride.

straight shot across the base on I-5 should be no more than 20 minutes.

I've reached the point where I'm really putting in a mental effort to get my workouts started.  I'm fine once I'm going, but I have to push myself to start.

Looking at those wave starts... well... you all wave to me as you go by on the bike.  This will be my first start at the front of the pack.  (M40-44)  I'm usually starting in the back in the Clydes.  Then I can pass the slower slower riders in the waves in front of me.  There really aren't any waves before me this time.  Oh well I'll get to see all the cool bikes as they whiz by!

I won't have to worry (much) about the cut offs I guess.  Tongue out

Won't be making it down for the preview ride -- I've got company in town over the weekend.  Looks like the local weather is going to be getting ugly for the last little bit of training.  I see rain on Sunday and rain next weekend, too, according the the long-term forecast.  I sure hope we have dry conditions on race day.

According to google maps, about 23 minutes.  Give yourself an extra 10-15 just in case, though there shouldn't be too heavy traffic in the early hours of the morning.  You never know, though.  If something happens on the I-5, your kind of stuck.  After you park in one of the big lots that they'll direct you into, you will have to ride your bike down and then walk it a ways as you approach the transition area.  That's another 10 minutes.

Right now weather shows 30% rain chance from 11- 3 or so, of course...   I am playing it by ear and will make a decision tonight.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.

My turn to run the kids around.

So far so good on the taper which officially started on Tuesday.  Was going to start on Monday, but went for an "easy" 15 miler with halfironmike, which slightly modified things. Smile

Had a great bike/run race sim workout on Thursday.

Looking foward to shedding some of this fatigue over the coming weeks.

Accuweather shows mostly cloudy with temps around 60° for our preview.  Of course, that means it'll probably dump on us all day haha.

Okay, seriously...I have a couple of people from down here that have said they're in for the brick.  We'll see what actually happens when the time rolls around.

I'll be down at Fiesta Island for the TCSD club race in the morning and then I'll head up to Oside.  I should have a good idea of conditions if anyone wants to call / shoot me a text in the morning.  I should be out on the island by 6:00 a.m.

jodavis21 - too bad you can't join us, but I know you don't need the workout / preview.  Hopefully, we'll see you on Sunday for a swim?

Triheado, TexasMPGal and all the locals - hope you can make it!

The silver lining as I justify it is, given rain this weekend, and forecast for next weekend, what are the odds of rain 3 weekends in a row????

FYI: Just noticed that the Bulldog Bike Race is tomorrow on base.  It starts at 8:30 and it's only 26 miles, so even if the last wave starts at 9:30 and it takes them an hour and a half, they should be clear of the course by 11:00.  I wouldn't expect us to be out on that part of the course until 11:30 at the earliest, so there should be no problem.  Worst case, I would expect there to be a lot of traffic filing out of the Las Pulgas Area 43, but at least (I hope) they'll be sympathetic of those riding through on bikes.  FWIW, the race web page notes that it is an open course and I think I recall passing recreational cyclists when racing the duathlon and sprint tri last year.

Hey guys, wish I could make tomorrow, but it looks like I'm going to need to get started at first light on my ride for the day due some activities that have come up for the afternoon.  Sorry it doesn't work out, but definitely hope to run into some of y'all come race day. If you see me (short with red hair, most likely wearing something that says "Team RWB") please say hi!

Have fun tomorrow and hoping the rain stays away from our weekends!

Going for my last long ride (60+ miles) and run (13 Miles) today.  I hope to really test my nutrition plan today with no stomach problems.  I have a long swim tomorrow then its tapper time.  I wish I could go with those of you who are going to ride the course this weekend.  I guess I’ll have to wait until Friday before the race to drive it.  I’m going to make sure I have my Army stuff on just to screw with the Jar Heads.  Don’t get me wrong I love my Marines, but I have to sport my Branch.    Cool

Does anyone know when they'll put up the bib numbers? I don't know why I care, I guess I'm just ready to get out of here and enjoy my vacation.

Looking at all the blog entries i really feel as though i am in trouble.  Tomorrow is my first ride outside prior to the race.  I have not run outside yet and will do that about 4 times before the race my longest run was only 9 miles.  Hmmm and I have been sick for the past 2 weeks.  Wish me luck!!

Will yesterday’s 60 mile bike ride and 13.2 run went great. I got to test my nutrition plan and feel pretty confident about it now.  Today will be a long swim then it's time for taper.  Hope everyone else has a good week and take it easy.  No injuries we’re less than 2 weeks out now.

Starting to pack up my stuff for the trip out to CA. All of HIM have been in very hot weather (90+ degree) so I am wondering if I need any addtional stuff I may need  to pack for this race.

I am really looking forward to the race I have had to do all of my outdoor long rides in 40 degree or less temps.

13 days and counting

You might want some warm clothes for race morning.  The air temperature will most likely be lower than the water temperature and it could be very chilly in the morning.  A sweatshirt and warmups should be enough.  Depending on your tolerance for cold water, you may want to pack a neoprene swim cap.  I might also bring a pair of old throwaway socks to wear for the long wait at swim start staging.  Not sure if arm warmers are necessary.  I won't wear them as I'm usually plenty warm by the time I crest the first hill on base (just after the left turn onto Stuart Mesa Road, around mile 5).

Mirrored goggles are also helpful as the sun can be brutal at the swim turnaround if it's a clear day.

Good preview brick yesterday.  Fast group.  I was hanging on for dear life on the way up the coast and got dropped on the way back through base.  Same thing for the run - cruised out to the turnaround w/Destroyer before he started to pull away.  Good to finally meet him and Chris M.

Swam in the Cove this morning.  Water temp was 57 degrees.  It definitely felt chilly at first, but we got used to it.  I didn't wear a neoprene cap and it wasn't too bad.  Swam about 3/4 mile at a nice pace, taking breaks at each buoy.  Need to do more of that before race day!

I was thinking about wearing a neoprene cap - do you wear it under a regular swim hat? That seems very tight.

I wore a neoprene cap for this morning swim.  I have the one made by BlueSeventy.  The way i like to do it is to put the neoprene cap on first, then my goggles, and the race issue cap on top.  I've only worn the cap twice but haven't had any issues with chaffing or chocking.  It's easy to pull everything off by grabbing the chin strap and pulling it over my head.

Thanks for the weekend training camp Mike!

Chris, you on saturday that you went out a little hard on your run and pulled yourself back in.  Are you just doing that to be in top shape for the race or will you also hold yourself back on race day even if you're feeling well?
