My strategy is to do what's best because I don't know.... after listening to all the good advice it seems to be the best idea to separate those last 2 workouts 17-18 days out so that's what I'll do thanks again. Long bike and long run both went well this week nothing to long but I still felt good when I finished.

Last 100+ bike ride

Last "long run"

All went better than I thought! Feeling good, nothing hurt "that" much, and in good spirit!

Hope everybody had a productive training weekend Laughing

Century ride on SAT, and 20 miler on Sunday.  What kind of volume do you folks have planned for the remaining time?

I'm thinking (note swimming is way off due to shoulder issue)

week of 10/2:  S 2-3X, B 200 miles (Long Ride 100) , R 45 Miles (Long Run 20)

week of 10/9:  S 2-3X, B 150 miles (Long Ride 75) , R 40 Miles (Long Run 18)

week of 10/16:  S 2x, B 100 miles (Long Ride 55) , R 30 Miles (Long Run 12)

week of 10/23:  S 1X , B 2X - 50 miles (Long Ride 25) , R 12 Miles

Probably another 100+ bike ride and 2.30hr run or so. I will try to keep the same volume on the swim until the week before.

then:

week of 10/16: 3hr bike (fast pace), run 2hr

week of 10/23:  2hr bike (fast pace), run 1.30hr

I was planning on having this week be my last big week of training, with Saturday likely my last big day, then backing down.  Looking at another run of 2.5 hours, bike of at least 100 as the big workouts, then backing down from there.  Can't wait

Wow, that was some week you had last week.  Don't know if its typical for you but two long bricks ending an almost 250 mile bike week and 60+ mile run week.  I feel very undertrained now!  Hope your not in the 45-49 AG!

edit --- looked at your logs, some impressive training.  you should smoke B2B!

yellow dots - channel markers   orange triangles - turn buoys   red dots - start finish   blue line - swim path

So... If I understand correctly, this map shows the path I should follow (assuming the turn buoys are placed as shown) to get the most benefit from the currents. Will I get DQ'd if I cut the corner (dashed blue line) as shown? Is the pink sight line what everyone means by "aim for the dock and allow the current to carry you"?

Unless something has changed, once you get into the channel and get around the squiqqly man boat taking the straightest path to the marina will be the quickest.  There were no buoys to worry about.  The full only had  one buoy at the start which was easy to get around and the squiggly man boat.  I assume the half is of a similar set up, get into the channel then turn at the boat. Your dotted line is probably the path I took.  There were some other buoys marking the course but that's what they were there for marking, not going around so I didn't pay much attention to them since the RD said they weren't important in the meeting.

This is an easy swim course to follow, don't turn it into anything else.  It is the shortest part of the day and there's plenty of elbow room once you get going.  go to the pre race meeting and they will cover everything.  In 2009 people were all over the course and the directions couldn't have been more easy to follow.  Go around first buoy, around boat, go to marina.  Getting to the ladders was easy too, your not going to get flushed into the intercoastal waterway never to be heard from again.  There will be a line of people to lead you the way since your in one of the later half waves.  If you swim to the beginning of the dock you might find yourself in a mass of folks trying to climb the ladders, assess as your getting closer, I swam around the outside to the furthest ladder and waited for one person while others were waiting at the closer ladders for several people.

Just another fyi, high tide is at 10:06 (Masonboro Inlet) so the current may not be noticeable by the time you get to the ladders.

I hope you're referring to the HIM swim.  Tide should still be incoming as the full swimmers (7AM start) are reaching the dock.

Just got back in from my last century before B2B.  Rode the tri bike (with new wheels!) on suburban route with 10-20mph winds.  Riding aero for hours in traffic strains my neck, & all those stops & starts take it out of the legs. No wonder cars get better MPG on highway vs city.

Hope this trusty steed helps me to the finish line at B2B....

Sweet ride! How do you like the Hed Wheels?
I love bike pron.

Low tide is at 3:32 so yeah the current will be cruising for the full, though I believe they delayed the start a few minutes in 2008 due to the lack of light which may happen since you guys will still be on daylight savings time, but that shouldn't mess with the full.  I was responding to the posters question regarding the half, with a wave start at 9 and being within an hour of high tide, the current may be slowing down and then slack prior to making it to the ladders.  You'll be on your bike by that time riding along interstate 140

thanks for the info... not to worried about the swim (or bike or run) I will finish (baring something bad happens - fingers crossed). Just not thrilled about 1690 people in front of me... I hate being one of the last out of the water. Although, it does make finding my bike in T1 rather easy.

Worst for me is the swim (always BOP), next bike (MOP), and best is run (MOP+)... so I will be playing catch up all morning.

Thanks!

Posted the pic so fellow BTers could say Hi if/when they see me in transition or out on the bike course.

Was planning to go with my Neuvation R28aeros (great all-around wheels, BTW) but ran across a sweet deal on these near-mint 2009 Jet 6's.  Only have a few rides on 'em, although that includes a century yesterday in 10-20mph winds.  Really like 'em so far- stiff, aero, & smooth riding with that wide 23 rim.  Not the lightest (~1800g), but that's no prob for flat tri.

As an adult onset swimmer, I find myself BOP on the swim as well.  I was grousing about this to a friend of mine and she said something like, "You think that's bad!  Try coming out of the water third and having the Entire Field pass you on the bike and run!"

I was just looking at it.  It looks like T1 and T2 may have both been reconfigured from last year.

Starting to feel excited/nervous!

You're right, the transition areas are different...The run into T1 is shorter and that's a good thing for numb feet.

+1

The cover photo of the swim start is awesome- even a little intimidating in black & white.  Almost like a pre-battle scene from an old war movie.

thats right, I remember now that I could feel my toes & fingers for awhile.   I remember fumbling around in T1 because my hands were so cold. I think they finally thawed out about 45 min's into the bike ride.

My heart rate comes up 10 BPM every time I open this thread. Can't believe we are getting so close.
This is my last big week and will do my last big day on Saturday.

On another note...anyone shipping their bike? If so, what company to use?

B2B swim course report...Lvis and I just got back from swimming the course Monday & Tuesday. We were looking over the Finish first and we were lucky to bump into Kristen http://www.withoutlimitscoaching.org/kristen-smith/  she was giving an on course swim lesson with  Tara who is is priming for the full. Very Knowledgeable and gracious with her time in sharing tips and pointers and explaining the course. Good luck to her student Tara and Kristen has a lot of folks in the race who I am sure will do well. Thanks for the help

We started on the beach day one and hugged the docks, during the race of course we will go middle channel. Lots of sighting and we had a decent current not real fast just enough to keep you from never being still. We tried to make the turn where Kristen said the squigly man boat will be and this is the area you gain  or lose time...The current will still try and float you right, pick a channel marker out and go then another channel marker, then another the extra sighting will make up for any lost time taking a poor route which is very possible remember the dotted line on the map and you will be fine.

Me 1:15 lots of sighting hugging docks ect...I am not a good swimmer 46 minute Half at OBX

Lvis 55 minutes he is a good swimmer I think he was 36 at OBX

Day 2...wow what a difference a day makes , The wind was north west  and we swam into a full foot of chop...keep your googles under your cap we were bouncing. With the big chop Jon decided to swim easy and stay next to me...my plan then was to swim hard almost race like, it seemed like we had stonger current but also we were getting slapped with some nice chop and getting bounced around . I Loved it! It felt like an ocean swim. Thank God we knew the course well by now as sighting was tougher and I was grinding out a good hard swim.

I swam 1:02 which is amazingly fast for me.

At all cost either swim the last half of the half course the day before the race or if you can't...make your way to the finish so you can see the last few turns and angles if you don't know the course.

I swam the Half last year and those last few turns and angle are a little tricky especialy if your seeing it for the first time on Race Morning. Good Luck Kenney

Thanks for the report. And that last bit gets even trickier if that big PPD boat is in the middle of the channel (like last year) and you have to swim around it. I hope they really keep that thing out of the way this year.
