Scott:

I was poking around your race listing and saw that you had done Big Fish back in 2009.  That was the last tri I did before my now 2 year old shook up my world for a bit.  In fact, we found out we were having her I think just a couple days before the race.  I woke up with vertigo that morning but got to the race regardless.  I finished a hair behind you...small world!

Big Fish in 2009 was my very first tri.  Hated that swim the water was so black!  learned a lot since then about how to ride a bike.

I am running the full Martian. Looks like it could to be a wet one.

dangremond - 2012-04-11 9:23 AM  I think if you want to run a marathon you should begin working toward running 5 to 6 days a week (preferably 6)...all easy and then slide into an appropriate training plan that has a similar # of days of running.  How much are you currently running per week (total miles, total days, how are the runs broken down)?  Also, your training log is restricted to friends for viewing - no issues with that - but wondering if you'd open it up to the mentor group?

I have to both agree and disagree with Mitch. You CAN do a marathon on less than 6 days (I did my first last year on 3 days at 3:45:00). However, I failed to meet my goal of 3:40:00 because I undertrained and did not put in enough miles. Running fewer miles trains you, well, to run fewer miles. I did a couple of 20 milers and had felt good about my training. However, the marathon really starts at mile 20 and that's where I felt the lack of mileage. More easy miles is probably he best way to go.

Being new to the group and all the discussion about the MAF training I can't wait to get home and order the book. I'm wondering if there is much difference in the methods vs Most Ironman training schedules.  All the workouts I'm doing seems to be zone 1 and 2 training.

Joe,

You mentioned your marathon so I hit your races button to check out your race report, but you didn't fill it out.

Filling out race reports is a good idea, not just so I can be nosy, but it is good for yourself. I go back and read my race reports so I can remember what I ate that morning, how I felt, what I felt I did right and wrong and so forth. One thing I wished I had done (and will do in the future) is record what I weighed the morning of the race. (I would really like to remember what I weighed last fall, but I don't).

Adding format for Lynne, Question for the cleverer folks amongst the group - why are the rows I add twice as deep as the originals? In my edit view they appear the same!

It's because when you add the row it puts in a paragraph marker which you can only see in the html version.  It's the same reason some of us had trouble with big gaps on the listing for the previous challenge.  I think it's something to do with how your settings are, but mine does the same and I still haven't figured out how to fix it, other than going into the html and doing it directly.  If you look at the html version there's quite a lot of crud in there, so I've been clearing it out whenever I can.  I guess it's just what happens when a lot of different people are copying and pasting the same data over and over.  But it's ok, I'm a closet geek, so I'm happy to play around a little Wink

Happy Birthday Marcia!  Hope it's been a good one.

I decided to make today another rest day after I woke up with a sore throat, yet again.  I'm still feeling run down, and work's been a little mad.  Despite not doing any training today, I still spent over 4 hours on foot patrol and we think the kit that we carry is at least 14lb, so that's a fair bit of exertion right there...

I have a couple of days off from work now, and I'm hoping I'll start feeling a little better.

Ran 4+ miles at my MAF pace today. Wow, really had to concentrate on keeping my pace down. I don't have a HRM yet so I used my watch to check my HR at each mile so I'm not sure of the pace but it felt a good 2 minutes slower than my typical training pace. Also did 1/2 hr on the spin bike at MAF but that felt much closer to my natural training effort.

cheekymonkeys1 - 2012-04-10 1:06 PMHas anybody else read this article -> http://members.rachelcosgrove.com/public/The_Final_Nail_in_the_Card... ? Any thoughts on it? I am having THE hardest time with my weight and STILL gaining. I'm watching what I eat, but my belly has a baby elephant in there, it just refuses to shift even with long workouts.
I tried to read it but it wouldn't open. The only thing that has worked for me was weight watchers. I began in mid January at 182 and am hoping to be under 160 when I weigh in this week. 25 more to go to goal.Sharon

Do you "diet" or have you changed your entire nutrition plan?  Many of us did the Maffatone 2-week test and afterwards slowly reintroduced GOOD CARBS back into our diet.  I have never struggled with weight but I try to drop pounds after the holidays.  I bought the book THE THRIVE Diet, I am not vegan but I have incorporated a good deal of the nutrition ideas into my own meals.  I have a great deal of energy as long as I'm eating right.  The second I start slacking, I'm dragging.

New shoes came in the mail today.  Good run in them, just wish the wind was a bit more cooperative.  44:17 3.5miles HR 153.  Even though the first mile is downhill I think it was the fastest with the lowest HR since I moved here.  Overall average wasn't to bad considering...  I hadn't been running around the house on runs longer than 30 minutes for over a month.  When the sun is out..it is blazing and those hills seem twice as tough but I'm up for them this spring and summer!

This week has been trying to squeeze training around life.  Yesterday was a quick 30 minutes on the trainer.  Today was a 4.87 mile run in 39:16.  Tomorrow will be my last day of training this week thanks to going on a camping trip this weekend to get trained to be an Assistant Scoutmaster for my son's Boy Scout troop.  Fortunately, there are only about 3 weeks and a half weeks left in the semester.  Then it'll be much easier to get in training during the day, at least for a few months.

I've been reading the discussion on MAF training.  It's important to remember that not every training method works for 100% of the people out there.

Happy Birthday Marcia!

Work seems to be taking the best of me these days, hope to spend some more time hare in the future. Another thing, this site seems to be exceptionally slow and is always 'eating' letters as I type. This is  really frustrating. I have to type on the note pad, copy it and paste here. It is really testing my patience...
