Veteran 513 Coeur d'Alene, Idaho | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread SnowVols - 2013-01-14 2:58 PM I just found this forum. I am in for CDA. Pretty excited as it will be my first full. Training started for me last week as well and unfortunately looks like long rides will be indoors for awhile due to ice and snow. Welcome! My first full also, and am also locked into the trainer until at least April - at least I can run outside, but today did it in 15 degrees and freezing rain... still beats the heck out of a treadmill. |

do you swim at the north y? I had thought to swim this morning but had other things going that prevented me from going in the morning. I swim at the downtown Y at 5am during the week, it works well for my work schedule. I have been up at the North Y, and think I may move my Sunday swims to there in hopes of it not being as crowded with it being a bigger pool. Plus the North Y is a bit over 6 miles from my house the shortest route, so I could just start running home after my swim and just keep adding distance. One of those people that love to swim at 5am j/k. I swim at downtown Y at lunch usually as that fits my schedule pretty well. If I recall Sunday mornings are not super crowded at the North Y I think Saturday they have swim team practice that takes up two lanes. |

I really have no other choice if I am going to get in a swim, my schedule isn't allowing for much else plus, it is a great start to my day. I will definitely check out the North Y this Sunday morning and see how it goes. I did manage to get in a solid 2200 in this morning, lane to myself, it was pretty great. Tomorrow morning I am going to try and get in a 5 mile run before work, which means hitting the road around 0445, yuck. Edited by smithe68 2013-01-15 9:23 AM |

I've been outside most days except for my speedwork day which I do on the treadmill more for safety than anything else. I was on my trainer at 4:45 this morning for 1:15 ride. Just in case hours are different for the Y's but I believe 9am is open time on Sunday for North Y. |

Thanks, I rarely run inside, and plan on trying not to do it again after last Friday's 49 laps around a 1/8th mile indoor track. Nice on the early ride, pedaling is something that I am struggling to find time to do with my current work schedule but have got to get in. Thanks for the heads up, same as the downtown location, so that is perfect. |

Member 41 Grant, MI | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I'm not sure I'll get a half in before CDA. I do however foolishly have a 126 mile bike tour Michigan Mountain Mayhem to do on the 8th of June. Not a ton of hills in southern Michigan so I picked this tour to get me mentally ready for the CDA bike course. The tour covers 10,000 ft of rise in the 126 miles. I am thinking of it as a great end to my training and then it's all taper to get to CDA.
We will also be riding in the MMM on June 8 and there will be 3 of us who also plan to do Coeur d'Alene IM a couple of weeks later. We do the MMM to find some hills and because we really enjoy it. This will be our 4th time riding this. If you see a family on Cervelo bikes, please introduce yourself. Edited by ckunst 2013-01-18 9:14 PM |

Gets a bit windy out towards the turnaround but not much in the way of flat. If you're not going up, you're going down. I used a 12/28 on my P2 and had no issues spinning up the 1.7mi 6% grade. Just my $.02... |

Can we get a bit more details on this? How steep, how long, how hard? thanks

If I remember correctly, and it's the hill you are talking about, it's approx a 6% grade. |

The bike course is 2 loops so you'd have that hill 2 times not 4. Once at mile 18 and once again at mile ~76. |

As i can see, again refering to the bike profile, we climb it at mile 19 - there, 45 - back, 78 - there and 104 - back. There and back are a bit different but still alike |

There and back are a bit different but still alike The hill you're referring to is called the "Mica Grade". From some analysis made by the folks on last year's IMCDA thread: heading South away from town, the hill is 1.7 miles at 6% (maybe slightly more). Heading North back into town, the hill is 2.1 miles at 6% (maybe slightly less). |

thats a good link to look at. I was looking at the times and power output by the people. So I'm going to think about the climb more in terms of minutes it takes to climb vs the distance and grade . maybe that will not make it so miserable. |

I'm pretty sure nothing is even 10% grade. This is a fairly busy highway, much of it newly built in the last ten years with a 65 mph speed limit. |

Expert 1535 Coeur D'alene, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Yep, what Ron said. Nowhere on that climb is remotely close to 30%. Looking at the Strava profile, there are some inconsistencies with reality. Once you cross the little bridge at the bottom and start up, there are no short downhills like the profile shows. The climb up this side of the Grade is very consistent. Also, the total distance from bottom to where you actually stop climbing and head into a very shallow descent, is nearly 2 miles. Climbing up the opposite direction coming back into town, the climb starts fairly abruptly and is steepest at the beginning, then gets a little less steep as you get to toward the top. Even when you feel like you're done with that climb though, you're still climbing slightly right up until you roll over into the downhill. Hope this helps and everyone's training is going well! |
