Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread chevy57 - 2012-07-08 8:09 AM I feel like I am between a rock and a hard place. My bike has not been shifting right and I could not get it dialed in so I took it to my favorite Bike Shop for service. They after multiple test rides tracked the problem to the read derailleur. They changed it and got me on my way. My wife thought this was my strategy to buy a new bike. Anyway I got it back and it shifted like a dream. I got back from my ride yesterday and had a message on the machine from the service manager of the bike shop. His message was for me to call him he had some information for me. Now my wife is convinced of the new bike conspiracy. When i called him back he said that in the process of troubleshooting my shifting problem they noticed what they thought was a crack in the frame. They called Cervelo and determined that this really was a crack and that the frame needs to be replaced. The new frame will be here Tuesday however I am out of town all week on business so I wont be able to get it back till Saturday. That leaves 7 taper days to shake it out before LP. I am torn between waiting till after the race, but it seems more risky to ride on a cracked frame than to swap it out one week before the event. What do you think? Kevin DO NOT RIDE A CARBON BIKE WITH A CRACKED FRAME. Unlike other materials, when carbon fails it is "catastrophic" meaning it will and can simply break entirely apart without warning. This I am certain of and this information is from engineers who work with carbon. "Catastrophic" is a term engineers at Easton use to describe when carbon fails. |

Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread What carbon fiber absolutely doesn’t do is stretch. Elongation is a quality belonging to other materials. While carbon fiber structures can be built to flex, they won’t bend… ever. What they do instead of bending is break. It’s called catastrophic failure and has been the bike industry’s great reservation where carbon fiber is concerned. Steel and titanium will generally bend before failing, but carbon fiber snaps like a suddenly angry dog. http://pelotonmagazine.com/Filter/content/3/838/Materials-and-Construction-Part-III I played ice hockey for about 10 years and we used carbon sticks reinforced with kevlar. Unlike a wooden stick or even aluminum, whe the carbon stick breaks - IT BREAKS. I've had dozens just literally snap or explode, and once when I got ridden into the boards and my stick was about to impale my stomach, it folded and broke into 4 pieces. And I used a 110 flex, STIFF stick. |

Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread chevy57 - 2012-07-08 12:20 PM OK thanks for the responses. I said I was between a rock and a hard place for this reason. It is not desirable to make this change now, but better than a catastrophic fail on the course. I will be easy to spot I will be the guy riding the brand new p2. Kevin You'll be easy to spot going into transition wearing crocks, too |

Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread IRONMAN NEWBIE ADVICE: Okay, so the focus for the last YEAR has been Ironman Lake Placid. LP. Ironman USA. Placid Baby!! Keene descent! Da Bears!! River Road rollers. The temperature of Mirror Lake!! Aero helmet or no aero helmet? Well, chances are you're going to toe the start line, have a great day, suffer on the Run like a wounded animal in the gutter , but you'll cross through those arches and here Mike Reilly salute, "YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!" You'll bask in the glow. Trade war stories. But then... after a few days past... sitting in your office or bedroom - alone, and you will feel lost. Perhaps depressed as the dopamine levels drop, the Ironman cloud evaporates, and you think, "Huh, now what?" It's SUPER-COMMON. It's called: POST IRONMAN DEPRESSION SYNDROME. And it sucks. One of the great ways to combat Post Ironman Depression Syndrome, or PIDS, is... with ...another Ironman!! Or, at the very least, a 70.3, half or full marathon. Even an autumn Olympic distance race will help. The next two weeks when you're going NUTS during your taper, it's a good time to scout out and sign up for another race. It will help to alleviate some of PIDS and it will give you some structure back to your training, and life. For me, I'll likely sign up for IMUSA 2013 on the Saturday before... and I've already signed up for the Poconos 70.3. So my broad-stroke training schedule is already set for the next year RULE of THUMB: Give yourself at least two weeks off from training post Ironman. Sure you can Swim, Bike or Run - but keep your workouts between 20 and 45 minutes, go as easy as you lilke, no speedwork, and just enjoy. But yeah, the "take home message is" be aware that within days after your Ironman, you will feel a drop in feel-good brain chemicals, the pink cloud does evaporate (ALTHOUGH THE FEELING OF ACCOMPLISHMENT DOES NOT, just the school-girl giddyness of it all ) and you will find yourself in this awkward spot of "NOW WHAT?" |

Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread XXXXX222222 Dream Chaser, this is Ironman #6 for me, and I remember that feeling after my first IM was done. Totally felt lost with nothing to focus on. Now I have a 1/2 marathon RNR Va Beach in Sep and 1/2 IM Beach to Battleship in Oct to focus on. 2 months to chill and back for IM 2013 training. It's hard to explain the empty feeling after IM, but it is real, and you can gain 10-15 LBS before you know what hit you, so watch after IM eating! Jim |

I'm thinking I'll do a bunch of local events. I keep thinking about LP 2013 and think how newbies decide to sign up the next year without ever having done one yet. Me I have to do the race and then afterwards decide if I want to do it again. It's tough because by then it's too late for that race because it normally sells out. I have enough keeping me up at night these next to weeks. I'm going to enjoy the ride and go from there. Thanks for the advice regarding post IM depression. I can almost feel it coming on already!! I was posed with the same question by my family this past weekend. after a long talk, we came to the conclusion that I am not where I would like to be physically to finish this years race in the time I would like. because of that, I am using this year for experience and to learn as much as I can, I will be signing up for next year with the plan of racing and getting as close as I can to a KQ(my agegroup is pretty easy... if I am allowed to say that) Sure is a lot to think about though but having decided has taken a lot of pressure off me right now! |

I think Id have a 2 word answer for them... |

Even with all the training there is still uncertainty. Not only will I will be doing all the distances for the first time, I'll be doing them back to back nonstop. I'll feel better after a repack the van this morning. Extreme Veteran 567 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Is anybody doing the Welcome Dinner Friday night before the Mandatory Race Briefing?, or has done it in the past. Is it more for just athletes or does everybody bring the family? I'll be coming up early and the rest of the family will be up sometime Friday (not sure if they will be LP by 5:30). Also does anybody know what's on the menu? If the family does make it in time, one of my little ones has a selective pallet, and can only eat about 5 things on the planet, so I'll have to make sure I make arrangements for him. |

Member 75 Huntley, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread A bit of a dilemma here: My husband and I have reservations at a place in Saranac Lake Thur-Sunday night; total cost around $800 bucks. We also will be staying in Schroon Lake (about 1 hr away) after the race Mon-Wed. Problem is, we are REALLY strapped for money right now (we decided to build a house too; moving in in late August!! Talk about adding expense to expense). So my question is this. We could cancel our reservations in Saranac Lake (maybe....have to see what their policy is) and stay in Schroon Lake the whole time. This would probably save us around $500 bucks. Only problem is, Schroon Lake is an hour away on race morning. Is this too far? Does traffic into town get bad? Please advise |

This is how the American teams do it at the TdF with the team car. Every once in a while the television coverage will pick up the impeccable Brits Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin commenting on the style and panache of a French or Italian team and how the director sportif manages to administer first aid, mechanicals, nutrition and race strategy from the cars or vans while the race is in motion. The Americans however, can make duct tape do it all. It is really quite amazing. JMoney, after IMLP you should consider IM Nice to show them how we do it in style.
