So what is everyone driving to move bikes and kids around.

We really don't want a minivan but that seems to be the best vehicle for transporting everything comfortably.  I'd rather not have an external rack on the vehicle so bikes would need to be stored inside the vehicle.

I have a GMC Yukon XL and a Ford F150

Showing your age Doug!?!?!   Laughing

So I am sharing the lane with another regular at the pool this AM (we seem to swim together at least 2 times a week) and we start talking between sets, which is unusual for her.  I always knew she was a competitive OW swimmer because she will throw me a tip every know and then, but she starts telling me about her 25K OWS race the previous weekend.  I'll be honest that I didn't really hear a lot of what she said after that because I couldn't get past the 25k part ......  I am doing the math in my head thinking that's over 15 miles ..... SWIMMING?

And I always thought the triathlete group was a little off center!

15 miles ......  swimming  .......  all at the same time .......  Really?  Copa####, are you familiar with this insanity?

Roni -- sending healing thoughts to your sister. She sounds so incredibly stoic.

Our washer/dryer are off limits to everyone but me!!! (OK, Dave occasionally gets to wash blankets or undies if he has a biz trip coming up and it's not laundry day, which is only one day a week in this house.

Tech clothes get washed (with baking soda if extra stinky) and then line-dried. They dry on our heated towel racks or hanging over heat vents in the winter, out on the deck when/if it's warm and dry. The amount of tech laundry for IM training is out of control. I do wear some things 2x before washing, as I'm not a super-duper sweater. So a jog bra or tech t might get 2 short runs before washing. Bike shorts, only one wearing. Bike jerseys, depends on the weather and conditions and how much I spit or snotted all over myself.

Trying to get out of town, but stalled by hubby's work. That's OK, as I get to procrastinate more, check in more, and try not to forget anything for awhile longer. Bags are almost packed. Almost, but not quite! Ha!! Updating iphone apps now, which is why I have time to be here online. You know, I'm taking care of the important stuff!!!! Really, when I go anywhere anymore I'm of the mind of "If I forget it, I can buy it there." So as long as I have bike/shoes/helmet/shades/wetsuit/goggles/running shoes/hat/tri shorts/tri tank, what more do I need????

IT'S ALL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SPORTS BRA!

Bike people, I have  real question!!

What difference does it make if you have a 52/39 or a 53/39?  What does that extra tooth do for you?

Here you go Suzy.

http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/bikegears/CompareBicycleGearing

Not much difference really at all.  Where would you find a 52/39?  If you're thinking about switching out your crank I wouldn't do it just for 1 tooth, much more to be gained by switching out the cassette (and cheaper also.)

Let me know if the chart makes sense at all.  Basically it shows you how fast you would be going in each gear at 90rpm.  I am assuming this is on a pure flat road with 0 wind, but you can see how little one tooth would make, we're talking tenth of a mph difference.

Home from the wonderful, quick trip to the PNW.  I think I brought the good weather!

Kyla - can't WAIT to track you.  Sent you an e-mail with the IM essay.

Sam - concussions?  We're pros, here.    Here's a link to the article about my daughter.  Don't mess with it, really.  Second-hit syndrome is real.  http://www.thehawkeye.com/Story/Concussions_090407

Roni - so sorry about your sister.  Sending prayers.

Ryan - WHERE WERE YOU?!?

Laundry - I do it, all.  About 568 loads a week.  Laundry is  going EVERY DAY, so stinky stuff doesn't wait long.  It's lazy of me, but I do throw the clothes into the dryer, too.  When they're really stinky, I throw some Borax into the wash.  My count will go way down this summer, when kid #1 and kid #2 move out.

Side note, anybody have experience with Zipps and Specialized Transition?  First try, they don't fit.

I hadn't heard of anyone with issues Linda.  I went over to ST and there were specific posts where people talk about using 404's in a transition.  The only ones I saw about having issues were with a wheelcover.  Where is it not fitting?

To make it 3 in a row (thats how I have almost 8k posts...)

Very excited, just about done with my cross bike, I should be able to post pictures this weekend.  Pedals and new tubulars should be here on Saturday.  Have to buy someone on the team a 6 pack to sit down and show me how to glue them up correctly.

Also, if anyone is interested Kat is running the 5th annual Tour de France Challenge this year.  Basically it's a challenge where you are assigned to a team that are based on teams racing in the TdF.  Challenge is you set a goal for the 3 weeks of either time, distance or sessions ridden.  Team that wins is the one closest to 100% meeting their goals.

We also root for the teams we get aligned with and make fun of the other teams along the way.  It's a good way to follow the tour when you have a team to root for.

What do you mean save it?  As in grab the performance file to analyze? Or to view the after report (bug doesn't work if you end a course early), or something else?

The front wheel won't slid in between the brakes.  the brake release is different than my other bike, or Jeff's, and we're scratching our heads on this one.  I'm sure it's just  a 'duh' thing, but I can't see it.

Oh you can't open the front brake?  Ok, I'll look at Sam's when I get home, I know it's different since the put the center pull brake on that bike (which is a very nice touch for aerodynamics), so I'm not sure how it works.

What brand/model brakes? I have SRAM Red and no problem at all. If it is tight, release the brake completely so that it is opened all the way. Put the wheel on and the reattach the brake. I have never heard of this problem for a front wheel.

For the SRAM red you can detach the cross cable from one side to open the brake all the way.

I think she must have drunk the latest Velo SF kool-aid about riding indoors:

http://triathlon.competitor.com/2011/06/training/the-endangered-outdoor-ride_31264

What are peoples' views on this trend?  I, for one, would go crazy.  I love the outdoor rides, even though I know that I could probably get a better workout inside.  For example when I am outside I know (looking at my TP data) that about 16%-18% of the time I am not pedaling at all and therefore producing zero power because I am stopped at a light or going down hill too fast to pedal or whatever.  Although that would be eliminated on indoor rides, I could not stand it.

Others' reactions?

The new Transitions have a center pull brake made by specialized, they're not SRAM, Shimano, etc.

I am assumnig there is a lever somewhere, if not you will have to undo the brake cable so it opens up all the way.

I do think a good mix of outdoor and indoor riding is the way to go.  When I have specific intervals I almost always do them on the trainer, even in the summer.  It's just impossible to ride 4 min @250%FTP, 1 minute, this, one minute that outside when you have to stop.

But even on a CT you can't simulate the accelerations needed to get up hills, or the handling skills you need to take corners at speed.

Ironman CDA Water Temperature Sits At 56 Degrees Fahrenheit

Updated: Jun 24th 2011 12:45 AM UTC by Hunter Reed

On Sunday, June 26 athletes will take on Ironman Coeur D’alene in Idaho. As many competitors start to gather their last minute items, one thing that seems to be on everyone’s mind is ‘how cold is the lake going to be this year?’The water temperature at Coeur d’Alene Lake is currently 56.3 F. Below is a link to a site that is updated daily to help you decide if you need to pack that extra swim cap.

Ryan - WHERE WERE YOU?!?

I'm so sad I missed the run!  I was at home in bed, feeling nauseated and running a temp.  No bueno!  I hope you had a good time in Seattle!

Fatty, love the cartoon!  Good find!  So this post has some tri-related content, the background to the picture is that I told John that coming out of T2, he should go slow, and ease into the run at a speed that he thought was a "glacial pace."  Since the tendency is to vastly underestimate how fast you're going, it's easy to get in a hole right off the bat.

I think it's super important to create a solid platform on which to build the run portion of the race, and that actually starts well before T2, when you've taken your last bit of nutrition on board so that your stomach can be somewhat settled before you transition from a mostly stable upper body on the bike to a dynamic motion on the run.  As you hop off the bike, your heart rate will increase and you'll be pumped up from seeing family and friends again.  These few minutes in T2 can really make or break your race.  As you start the run, think: glacial pace.  Take the time in the first few minutes of the run to go through a mental checklist of how you're feeling: proper turnover, relaxed shoulders and jaw, controlled breathing, etc.  Keep the pace EASY.  As your heart rate comes down and you get into the rhythm of the run... then you start building up to your target pace.

NO S#!#!!!!! Just swam in it!! Rumor has it the temp was close to 60 yesterday, but down to 56 today. A (seasoned triathlete) friend speculated that they opened up the dam yesterday that lets in the fresh snow run-off. I will say, it was, um, chilly. Choppy, too -- much more fun to swim with the wind than against it! We are hoping to gain a degree or two by tomorrow. But really, it wasn't awful. I'd say it took me about 5 minutes for my face to stop hurting. Speech was a little impaired when I finished, and hand/foot mobility a little limited. Nothing that a 112-mile bike ride can't fix!!

We are lucky to have these opportunities. These gifts. These dreams and desires. I'm not gonna let a little cold water rain in my parade!!!!!!!!
