tahrens - 2010-01-29 1:41 PM Thanks to everyone on the feedback for volunteering.  I never thought about being a finishing chute catcher but that sounds wonderful.  What a motivation for racing the following year.  I told my husband about the pee comments from being a wetsuit stripper and  - well let's just say that particular duty is no longer on the table.  That's something I never thought of.   And I realize coming from me that is surprising Wink  (For the new people I have a bit of a reputation of encouraging people to pee in their wetsuits when it's cold.  I figure everyone does it whether they admit it or not - so why not let new folks in on the tip.

We are suppose to get real snow in NC this weekend.  Almost a foot!!   I know you northerners and Canucks don't think much of that.  Hopefully it'll just be snow and not ice.  If I fall off the boards for a while that means the power lines are broken from the ice storm. Wish me luck.

Trina - how did you survive this winter blast?  It hit you yesterday correct?

Tracy:

I was one of the first to volunteer for the Duke 1/2 last year so I got my choice. I was the finish chute guy for the first 1 hr of finishers and thus got to see the top men and women. It was VERY cool, and there was only one a$$-hole in the bunch.

I then was switched to T2 guard duty. That was no fun. Repeat after me "only triathletes in the transition area!" One lady kept coming in. I wanted to tell her I was going to disqualify her husband because she was an idiot. (of course I had no power to do that.)

Totally not tri related, but... my daughter (who's in basic training) got her orders yesterday. She'll be stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana and deployed to Afghanistan in April or August. We knew this was a reality when she joined, but I still worry about her. Maybe if it's not til August she'll be able to come down to Lonestar.

I have a survey question....I'm so use to aches and pains I don't know what's normal anymore.

Do your feet hurt in the morning when you get up? Not a specific painful spot like PF but just a general ache till you take a few steps?

Trying to decide what pains are from running and what is just getting older.

Funny, I posed this question to Suzy when I first started ramping up the running mileage in the fall.  I had gotten so used to achy, sore, stiff ankles and feet for the first few minutes upon awakening, that I thought it was normal!  to be honest, my ankles were kind of sore throughout the day, too!  btw, i am 44, so older than you, i think.
At the time, she said, she never had this problem, maybe I needed to do deep tissue massage or at the very least get into a regular stretching, foam rolling/or trigger point (myofascial release).

I took her advice and invested in the trigger point quadroller and footballer?(the one for calves) and it has made a world of difference!  http://store.tptherapy.com/Trigger_Point_Total_Body_Package_U6_Book_p/tpt-ttlb.htm
for some reason, i don't remember it being that expensive, I think I went on amazon.

The one for the calves is wonderful!  You can get alot of release from foam rollers for the quads, but for the calves, this is the best!  I have not had a re-inflammation of my old pf, my ankles are much stronger (less random ankle sprains, etc).

Compression socks are good, too, however, it sounds like what you are describing is pretty close to what I experienced...now, I was going from about 15-18 mi/week to about 20-25 at the time, so I don't know where you are at right now, I remember you are coming back from an injury?

pm me if you have any questions

I screwed up. I planned on going to the talk by Chris McDougall, the author of Born to Run, but just realized it is in a high school over two hours away. Even if I still wanted to go that far, I would by a 1/2 hour late. Frown

I need to pay more attention to the details in these email I get.

I don't even think I have to be part of the MG anymore...Kim and most of you know me too well!  Totally agree with below.  If you are feeling stiff getting up it is because you either are pushing yourself too hard or are not actively stretching enough to stay flexible. Other than my foot rehab, the bod feels like a million bucks!

Thanks John.  I bought two suits and the paddles Tracy always recommends (shhhh-dont tell coach Steve).  My only complaint is they totally screw you on the shipping. I really hate companies that make their money this way.

TOTALLY. Roni, I don't know how one can endure that as a mother. Wow. Hugs comin' at ya.

Kim -- 360K yards in your Speedo endurance suit? Awesome!! So I have about 160K to go in mine, I guess. They didn't make suits like that when I was a youngster, and I LOVE my suit and how long it has lasted w/o stretching out and disintigrating. I thought it felt so weird when I first got it. I've been wanting to buy a new one (just cuz, not cuz I NEED it!!)...

Happy Friday to all!! I'm looking forward to my evening -- baking a pineapple upside-down cake with the kids. Odd, I know, but there was one in a book I'm reading to them and they've never had one and I've never made one, so we thought it would be fun. Can't bring myself to allow maraschino cherries in my house, though, so we'll use REAL cherries (frozen) in our pineapple circles.

Tomorrow I'll bike it off...

Yes, Roni, I totally meant to X3 on that sentiment.

Now, where is that recipe share for our group, again??? Kyla, that sounds yummy!

I made a delicious soup called "winter ribollita" (tomato based with cannelini beans, chard, pancetta/bacon) from a recipe in the newspaper earlier this week that we have been enjoying almost every night (except for homemade pizza last night).  Would love to share it with all of you!

Figured the big THANK YOU was worth posting yet again for Roni.

That soup sounds yum!!! I'd love the recipe!! My cake recipe that I choise is just out of the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. If it turns out well I'll post the recipe. How can cake not turn out well, though? Anytime there is butter and sugar in something it's bound to be good, right!? I made a chocolate cake last week to take to my book club; made it in a bundt pan. To my family's pleasure, it broke coming out and I didn't want to take it out in public, so they got to nosh on chocolate cake crumbles for a few days. Tasted just fine, though!

WELL CRAP!!!  I NEED ADVICE!!!!

I just finished my first three weeks of Base training, then I changed my race schedule!  Now, based on my HIM date in September, I am not supposed to start my base training until the last week of March/first week of April.

I guess I need to back my training down until to prevent burnout/overtraining/injury.

How would you approach the extra 8 weeks I have before I have to start my base training all over?

For Reference:  I have been working out 1-2 times/day and running alot (25+mi/week), swimming moderately (2-3 times/wk), and just starting my cycling (mostly on the trainer).  I would say the bike is definately my biggest limiter.

Thanks for the help.

I am no coach, but if biking if your self admitted limiter, I would spend the time on that.   Do a 20 minute TT, figure out your FTP and work had to get it up before you start your real training.

pm me if you have any questions

Thank you all for your input.  This issue has been on going even when I was resting over the last year.  I use to get up trying to pin point the pain which was in my heels but has now moved to a general tightness.  It's not sharp and doesn't even really hurt I just step lighter for the first couple of steps and it's just not suppose to be there.   Does that make any sense?   My achilles and calves are beyond tight and have been forever.  I have been doing 10 minutes of stretching/rolling on the foam roller everyday + yoga twice a week for the last two months and massages about once a month with little change in flexibility which is very fustrating.  My running time is only up to 30 min and then it's a run/walk.  I am trying out the barefoot running because I think it will ultimately help my achilles issues and that takes a lot of slow building.    Found a local store that carries the Trigger Point tools today and will try and get by this weekend and add that to the arsenal.    ...Oh and the compression socks.  Hadn't thought of that.  I'll give it a whirl while it's still cool.

Thanks for letting me vent.  Sounds like I need to keep doing what I'm doing.  Back up from 3-4/1 run/walks to maybe 2/1 or 2/2.  Oh, and stay patient.  Grrrr....

On my favorite subject of food...that soup sounds yummy.  Finally got a cool spell here this weekend and made another yummy EASY Potato and Corn Chowder.  Good Stuff!

Before the kids come home???  90 minute RUN with the wife?  Sound like you might need to throw a little extra sumth'n sumth'n in that long list of things to do    Log them as sports minutes.

Kelly--Have you ever had any ART or Graston performed on those legs?  If it is adhesions that is causing some of that tightness either would be extremely beneficial.

Trevor-Sounds like a fun, adult weekend!

Did my 20' off season TT this morning which we have had on hold due to my foot rehab.  Those suckers hurt-lost it with 1:07 to go, but fortunately I was smart enough to bring the trash can close by.  Saw a 10W improvement versus October at a lower HR so pretty happy with that outcome. Factoring it down to compare to my August hour long TT, I have seen about a 15W improvement.  Can any of your bike officianados tell me whether this is a reasonable improvement?

Today: 172W, 167 AVGHR, W/KG: 3.76

We'll see what boss man has to say...he is very light on the praise front so I am guessing it will be something like "ok, now we need you to start working harder"
