Do I just go to my GP? X2 on what Nicole said.. You should see one before you workout again. Depending on your insurance, you may need to see your GP before sports doc or pt. You should definitely go to a sports doc or a good PT. A good one will help diagnose your problem and look at your deficiencies in your form (if you have any) and make some suggestions. I got shin splints last year, but not nearly as bad as yours. Mine was due to increasing milage too soon and doing hill workouts too soon (i'm told down hill running is worse on the shins). I hope you feel better soon. |

Master 1318![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Houston | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!Glad you like the bars, aero makes a huge difference especially in steady state efforts like triathlons. You sacrifice some power to the pedals from the road position but you'll end up faster. gavisk - 2010-04-05 1:12 PM Thanks to everyone who gave recommendations for clip-on aerobars. I couldn't decide between the T2 Cobra and Jammer GT, so I decided to go with whichever I could find cheap on Ebay. Got a great deal on a brand new set of Carbon T2 Cobras. Mounted them up yesterday morning and went for a ride. It's AMAZING how different my bike feels. Not only faster (especially in a headwind), but I was surprised to find that my lower back feels better when I'm on the bars. I feel like I can relax and support my upper body with my bones instead of the muscles in my back. I also noticed that having extra swing weight around the headtube makes my bike much less twitchy at high speed--a good thing, as it used to kind of freak me out a little bit above 35mph. Now it's really solid feeling. In all, a great purchase that I think will serve me well until my wife and I get settled with our house buying and selling and I can focus on finding a TT bike. It's funny to think I was skeptical about the aero benefit of simply adding bars, because I see it every time I go skiing: if I'm with a friend going fast down a cat track (not turning), and one of us bends at the waist and tucks the poles, that person will very quickly pull away from the person standing upright. I somehow didn't realize that aerobars on a bike would have such a similar effect. |

Too much chocolate, red wine and good laughs, not enough training (Too muddy on the road for the shoes I brought and I am too slow in Rubber boots). NO BEARS!!! We saw about 30 Elk, a small herd of Cariboo (that far north). The Cariboo are a unique gene group of about 30 animals separated from all other herds when the valley was flooded for a hydro dam. We have never seen signs of them before but they were moving upto thier summer grazing. It was pretty cool to hear them going through the oldgrowth and calling to each other in the dark. Shin splints SUK. I have had them since I played HS football and never thought they would get any better. I would run for a week or two then the pain would be so bad I would have to stop for a month+. Ice and stretching helps but the best I found was time and resting them. After I joined this site I did some reading and decided to go for a proper fitting at the running store. My splints have just about disappeared after getting the first pair of properly fit shoes I have ever owned. I can not reccomend getting a proper fit done enough. |

Triathlete Nation ~ Texas! | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!A little late, but my $.02 on the shin splints... Kel, what you describe doesn't sound like shin splints to me. I have suffered from them several times (years ago). Yes - downhills are very tough on your legs/joints and can contribute to shin splints. Another major cause is simply shoe size. If your shoes are 1/2 size too small, they can cause shin splints. Have you changed shoes recently? Maybe same Make (ie Brooks) but the model is newer... the size can vary as they make stupid unnecessary changes simply to sell more shoes, when in fact the shoe was fine the way it was... *SORRY - rant tangent!* Anyways, if you changed shoes that may be a cause. I changed size in my shoes in 2003 (10.5 from a 10) and have not suffered shin splints since. |

Master 1209![]() ![]() ![]() New York, NY | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!Thanks for all the advice, suggestions and well wishes. All very much appreciated. So, I had an ART appt scheduled for this morning, and ended up going last night instead, thinking that this pain could possibly be the result of the muscle inbalance already going on in that leg. Or at least, I wanted to rule that out. I left there feeling really no better, but also no worse. Walking home from the subway to my apartment last night was slow and painful, and is even more painful today. Went to an orthopedic/sports med doc this morning. I was pretty sure it wasn't shin splints, which he confirmed. Xray ruled out an obvious stress fracture. Going for an MRI tomorrow to rule out an early stress fracture, or anything bone related. Otherwise it's likely bad tendinitis. I'm sporting a pretty hot boot. I really wish I had even the slightest idea as to how this happened....haven't changed shoes in a while, my sneakers aren't worn out, I haven't ramped up volume/intensity dramatically, haven't tripped/stumbled/lost footing while I was running. Absolutely nothing rings any bells. So, here's where it leaves me....short of a miracle, it's really unlikely I'll be running Nashville. Tri at the end of May is on the fence, Mooseman is June could maybe happen but there would be minimal training beforehand. It's not clear when I can run again. How I feel will determine when I can ride again. I'm crushed and just really sad right now |

It is a setback, and will require some patience and work once you get back to feeling no pain. It sucks - no doubt - but you will bounce back from this. You will not lose as much fitness as you may think. Stay positive, try and smile as often as possible, we got your back and will encourage, listen and send healing thoughts and prayers for our KD to be back in action in no time! Hang in there kiddo - you can whoop this - keep the faith! |

Master 1623![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!X3! Injuries are always frustrating. i feel off a horse several years ago broke my wrist and couldn't ride for 7 weeks. For me at the time it was the absolute worst thing in the world, and for the first couple days I was pretty upset, but I tried to focus on getting better and still went out to the barn every week to help my friends before and after lessons. I know it's hard especially with all the hard work you've done these past months, but you need to focus on getting your leg better and unfortunately that may mean missing a race but you definitely don't want to aggravate it more by running on it. Keep you chin up you'll get through this. Like Betsy said it's still early. you have plenty of time to focus on recovery and then race. Focus on the stuff you can do and not what you can't and this will be easier to deal with such as strength training for upper body and core. Hopefully you can bike soon even if you can't run. Sorry you have to go through this but I know you'll make it through and be racing and training soon enough! Betsy0706 - 2010-04-06 5:49 PM What Justin said times two. Like everyone else, sending good healing vibes your way... but I also want to point out- since you still don't know EXACTLY what the injury is, it might heal a lot faster than you might think. Stress fractures are a bummer, but tendonitis is one of those things that is different for everyone. I get it in my foot from time to time, but usually after a week or so of rest and ice it stops flaring and I can go back to life like a normal person. |

The anxiety replaced with excitement and I am really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, this morning I woke up hurting. I am sore and achy all over. I've done less this week to begin my 'taper' and haven't really pushed myself and am sore places like my elbows. Last night I noticed before my trainer ride my throat was a bit swollen and it hurt a little to swallow. I get sick like every 2 years so this is rare for me. I already took some Emergen'C and will take some again soon and some probiotics as well. The girls have PE today and I planned an easy 3 mile run but I think I just might skip that. Maybe I can pop in a movie and try to cop a nap. |

Takes a lot for me to resist that work computer but I will try. Hoping some rest will put me to normal. Lacking sleep lately. I should have known it would be a bad day when I forgot my swimcap. Thankfully I have short hair. |
