Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread jonmetz - 2009-07-09 3:56 PM So I just walked the run course out of T2 up to the top of the "hill". I am not an expert but I say attack the “hill”. It is only three city blocks long. The first section is about 120 steps. The second section (two city blocks) is about 150 steps. It looks bad. Climbing this hill is more mental than physical. Don't get me wrong it will get your heart rate up but you have a few things working in your favor. First, coming out of T2 is a downhill and then a flat. Use this to get your cadence up and running legs back after the bike. Second, after the "hill" you have a downhill so you will have an opportunity to recover and get you heart rate back down. Don't take this the wrong way, but whatever you do - on Race Day - do not attack the hill. You feel great right now, come race morning after swimming 1.2 miles and biking up 56 rolling hills, the last thing you will want to do is attack that hill. Please trust me. Read usernames TH3 FRB's advice... from earlier in this thread. Last year he ran this run course in an amazing 1:27 -- AND HE DID NOT ATTACK THE HILL. His overall time was 4:27. He said to take this hill easy ; the pro's have commented how tough this hill was and they also took it easy. If you attack this hill your gonna blow up hard. If by some amazing reason you go up it the first time and it's easy, then by all means the second time attack it. But I highly, highly doubt that will happen. I am not trying to play devil's advocate or stir the pot... I am trying to be a genuine Beginner Triathlete friend to you and everyone when I say that attacking the hill would be a terrible, terrible mistake.

Expert 1158 A Husker stuck in VA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Someone else just offered me theirs, thanks though. If you need anything give me a call. I might be willing to do a bike run to the beach on Saturday for a few people, however because I know how touchy some people are with their bikes you must realize that your bikes will have to lay in the back of my truck as that is how I transport mine and I don't have a bike rack. If it is only one person I can bring the wife's Beemer, it has my bike rack on it. Scott |

Master 1485 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Dream Chaser - 2009-07-10 7:31 AM Maybe I should clarify...Everyone seems to be afraid of this hill. By "attacking" it I suggest that you dig in and run not walk up the hill. I am not suggesting a sprint up the hill but I think all the negative talk about the hill has people worried. If people go into the run thinking the hill is doable (which it is) they will be more likely to get up it and finish the race strong.jonmetz - 2009-07-09 3:56 PM So I just walked the run course out of T2 up to the top of the "hill". Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Dream Chaser - 2009-07-10 6:31 AM That's the plan for myself and the athletes I have racing @ RI70.3, there is no need to attack the hill (or any hill for that matter not even on the bike course) and blow up precious energy on 1/4 of mile when you could use that energy for 6 other miles. Basically just get into a rhythm in which you get up the hill as 'easy' as possible (which still be pretty hard) and then get back into your race pace.jonmetz - 2009-07-09 3:56 PM So I just walked the run course out of T2 up to the top of the "hill". Elite 2423 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread Picked up my stuff early this morning. No lines ran in to VM354 on my way out. Nothing too exciting inside, good selection of clothes. T2 is located across the road from where it was last year. Run finish seems to be the same...I think. Fixed my rear flat, did laundry and even threw most of my junk into my bags. |

Elite 2423 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island : Official Thread The hill is pretty big. I run some that are similar just in training, but yes I will be taking it easy on the hill. I did walk it today, half of it with my daughter on my shoulders. No reason to attack it, unless of course you are going for an OA or AG win. |

TMI!! I'll look for your race # instead of any other "identifying characteristics" Looking forward to a great race day. I for one am not attacking the hill. I've done hill repeats and run in a fairly hilly area but that hill is just a bit much. Plan is to walk the first time and see how I feel second time around. No qualms about walking 2x. Off to finish laundry, start packing and get the kids ready for their weekend at grandma's! Oh, and to pray that there's no traffic tomorrow on 95 thru Conneticut! |

I'll pray for you, I sat in parking lot hell on 95 today, over 5 hours from NYC!!! It was the longest, slowest drive I've had in awhile. There were times I was driving 5mph. I could have run faster! But maybe it was the Friday crazies all trying to get to the beach. Good luck and we'll see you here! |
