I had a solid race that I'm happy with. I'll post a report today or tomorrow. Short version - 11th overall, 2nd in my age group and beat one of my running rivals that prompted my offseason run training. |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Worlds are in Edmonton and its a big military town. After 13 years we just pulled our last troops from Afghanistan so a Support the Troops theme makes sense. Its also the 100th aniversary of the PPCLI which are based in Edmonton. (Princess Patricia's Cdn Light Infantry) they were the first Canadian unit to see action in WWI in late 1914 early 1915. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Made my 50 miles! (I think.) 2500m today for a total of 81,200m. Wasn't that easy as I had to swim while both HS swim practice and a middle school part involving giant inflatable balls with kids inside was going on around me (really). The swim coach nicely gave me a lane to myself since not many kids were at practice. Mostly an 1800m continuous swim to work on pacing for my first race (that's the distance--kind of random!), plus some 50's and warmup/cooldown Did it at 1:44/100m pace in water that felt like OWS! Just feeling really tired the last few days from a combo of training, work, and cat craziness at night. Starting taper tomorrow--can't wait! |

I am thinking I am NOT going to make it. UGH!!! Annoyed, but going to keep plugging away in hopes that something miraculous happens! Training for Half Marathon and Olympic Tri so we'll see how it all fits in. Way to go! |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 What's the meet? Curious how big it is, and how much spacing you'll have between those. Tough schedule regardless! Another 4000 today. Included a few 400's to get more used to going longer again. First was tough, as I figured it'd be, but second wasn't so bad. Rather tired from the start after the double yesterday, but think I did ok. That had a main set of 2 x (10 x 50) fairly quick, but not killer effort in the morning, and then ~3,000 at masters that evening. Got through with the 1:30 interval group, but it was rough. |

Veteran 2297 Great White North | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Its in Medicine Hat. The pool is a decent 8 lane 50 m pool with bulkhead. The meet runs SCM and should have 100-150 masters swimmers. Lots of rest after the 1500 and 800 as they are first event both days and there is a 2nd warm up hour after each. After 100 Fly is 400 free and then a short break so a decent rest period. Like almost all masters meets its timed finals so no 2nd swims in any races. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 40 minutes of OWS in Singapore. Logging it as 2000m (total 83,200m), but most likely more than that. I wasn't swimming a simple back and forth route so hard to check on google earth--kind of going in a figure 8 around two connected beaches. Mostly freestyle with a bit of other strokes. Testing some new goggles and a speedsuit I got on sale. Just couldn't resist 100m or so of open water butterfly! it's much easier in salt water due to added buoyancy, at least for scrawny people like me. Also noticed I don't have any of the breathing issues that plague me in the pool when I'm in open water. it doesn't matter if I breathe every 2, 3, 4, 5, or even, swimming easy, 6--I don't feel like I'm short of breath, even at race pace. The air isn't pristine here either so most likely reason is the chlorine is triggering my issues in the pool. Grrrr. Need to live near a tropical ocean. Edited by Hot Runner 2014-03-23 9:00 AM |

I haven't been swimming in an ocean since I started doing my tri swimming. It feels that different than fresh water? How does it compare to the buoyancy from a wetsuit?

I am jealous. I've only swam in the ocean a couple of times on vacation just to get something in. Didn't pay much attention to the feel...I am a little nervous that the next time I see salt water will be when I get to Florida for IMFL in November. GULP... |
