The highlight of my weekend was my daughter learning to ride her bike without training wheels.  I told my wife that I'm not sure which day I was more proud, yesterday or the day she was born

My little rider in action:

That's a scream of delight, she was pretty proud of herself too.

AWESOME!!!!!

Check this out from Saturday!!!!!

and then here I am tony'ing it,  except i actually won!!!!

SWEET!!!!

And congrats on the victory!  I hope you enjoyed a beer in the bathroom post-race.

John and Matt - How old are your kids that are learning to ride without training wheels?  I have been working on my recently turned 5 year old and he seems to want no part of it.  Not sure if I should push him a little more or let him tell me when he is ready.

edit - for some reason, I can't see Matts pic on either my home computer or my work computer.  Saw the vids though and they are great!

Great pictures and videos!!!

My kids seemed to be ready to get rid of the trainer wheels at around 6. My youngest 2 have just got new bikes, a Trek and a Giant so that's my upgrade money spent again...

My son refused to get rid of his trainer wheels until we went on holiday with friends and one of the dad's taught him in one afternoon, I think sometimes they trust someone else more than their stupid dadEmbarassed

jack is 5, he'll be 6 in a few months.    i took the training wheels and pedals off at the same time a couple weeks ago.  he's been playing around on it figuring out the balancing and all that.  he asked for the pedals on saturday.  that was that.

Question for the group; if you plan your long run for late afternoon, how do you plan your eating leading up to the run?  I typically do my workouts first thing in the am, mostly on an empty stomach, and yesterday's 8 mile 3pm run did not go well.  Felt like I was going to vomit from mile 2 on.

Christina, I suffer, too, on afternoon runs. (no jokes from the peanut gallery!). What did you eat yesterday? I find I have to eat lightly, seems like a turkey sandwich or something like that works for lunch and I have to have 2 hours between lunch and run...I don't do well with salads or too much fiber (or Ramen noodles!). And drink enough water during the day, but nothing for at least an hour pre-run. So far it's trial and error! Oh and no cheese or dairy for me. As an aside, how long was long and do you always do empty stomach? I have forced myself to eat in the morning for anything 90 minutes or more...has helped me maintain energy.

Lunch was grilled chicken with homemade tabouleh around 12:30.  I might have hurt myself with some cheese and wheat crackers about an hr before my run.  It was the kids snack and I just grabbed some.  I am constantly having a hard time keeping my water intake up too.  For am long runs, I try to have a 1/2 whole wheat eng muffin with peanut butter or a banana about an hr before and eat a gel or 2 along my run.  My tummy feels fine there but I do think I start dragging towards the end.  I might need to try upping my intake maybe with liquid calories. Figuring this stuff out is tough!

I'm a little embarrassed to type this, but my 10 yr old just learned to ride without training wheels.  At 6 he was learning but took a fall and ever since then he had no desire.  I've encouraged him, but never pushed, so he has not learned.  He now has a desire to do tri's (doing a relay next month) so he decided to learn.  My younger two (8 & 7) will probably learn in the next few weeks since the oldest has done it, and they never let him get too far ahead.  They also want to do tris.

My oldest two were on the older side too...either 6 and 8 or 7 and 9...I can't recall now.  I think I expect the youngest one to do everything early because that is usually what happens with him...

I've got a 14y/o daughter that did sort of the same thing... At 4 and 5 she was burning up the t-wheels.  Took them off she took a good spill and has never gotten back on.  She's a stubborn little cuss too... the more I pushed and begged the more she dug in her heels (just like her momma!).   I let it go for a while, asked her again a few months back - now that she's a teenager she says, "No way!  'I' can't be seen riding a bicycle with 'YOU'!  GROSS!"  -- Kinda hurt my feeliings...

Got her back a few days later when I dropped her off at school.  In front of all the her class mates,as she walked away, I yell out the passenger window, "LOVE YOU KENZIE!  HAVE A GREAT DAY AT SCHOOL BOOGER BEAR!"

The death glare was priceless then she took off running - I drove away LMAO!!

Warning: Long post... covering a few things... have some extra time since I'm not squeezing in workouts (YEAH!!)...

My son learned to ride a bike not by us teaching and teaching (which we did), but by watching a younger neighborhood kid ride around and around one day. He said he wanted to try again, got on and that was that. Daughter was harder to teach, but we went the take-the-pedals-off route and she caught on quickly. If you take off the pedals and just let 'em tool around they really figure out the balance thing quickly.

So no one got a video of my IM finish. No worries, I did finish and that's what counts. But Dave did get some sniblets throughout the day and he strung them together here. Bike vids are around miles 70 and 100. Note the funny guy in his skivvies after I pass my fam. There were 2 of them and they totally cracked me up! Run vids are around mile 12 and 14. At the end where I ask my daughter where her brother is and everyone says they don't know? Well, he really was lost for quite awhile and my dad ended up talking to a police officer and giving him details, and said police officer eventually found Keller and called my dad and reunited everyone. I guess Keller was running off all day long -- hard on everyone!!

Almost done with my RR, but wanted to share a quick story about the woman I met before the race. We were sitting next to each other before we suited up, just hanging out. We started chatting -- her first IM, she's a strong swimmer, from Portland, etc. I told her my swim story from last year (super physical) and talked races with her. She told me about her mom who raced Kona in 1988 -- SO COOL!!! We realized we read the same blogs and laughed about stories and things, about expecting 4 things to go wrong in an IM (a la Beth Walsh), about Bree Wee running CDA last year and doing REV3 Portland this year, etc. This woman (in my age group, too) was really nice and a great person to talk to. We get suited up and are about to walk down to the water, and she tells me that her mom who raced Kona, died 3 weeks ago of breast cancer. My heart just sank and my eyes filled with tears and I gave her a big hug. What a burden to carry for 140.6 miles, yet what a gift to have had her mother. It really touched me and I never let it go throughout the day. I can't imagine racing with a heart so raw. When I saw her on the run I gave her a huge shout-out and high five -- I was so glad to see her. I've since found her on FB and we've exchanged notes. Apparently she was interviewed for IMLive, but I can't find the video. I've asked her for the URL but haven't heard back.

Things like that really put IM and life in perspective. I was so thankful to have met her that morning.

RR almost done, but requires some proofreading. Trying so hard not to George it!! Ha!!

Carry on...

Great story.  I wonder if it was a tough decision for her to do the race so soon after or if she just knew it was the right thing for her to do.

Ok real question.

I have a 1/2 Iron this weekend. And then IM end of Aug. Only 2 races left.

A girl on my team offered her 404 and 808 for me to use in both the races. And training rides, etc.

They are tubular. I have no clue how to change one right now.

I did buy the Reynolds 32mm clinchers and use them currently.

On one hand I think they would be great to use. I would be sooooo super fast on them.

But, I think I would always be thinking in the back of my head, "please don't flat" and "please don't crash and wreck Tara's wheels."

What are your thoughts on using them?
