Well guess who is hanging out in my office this afternoon? (hmm, guess she needs a name)

I'd narrowed my search down to 4 bikes, one of which I eliminated before test rides based on components at that price point.  I rode the other 3 at lunch, might have gone a little long, but who cares.  Anyway, I actually found all three in my size to test ride and liked this baby the best.  I'm still amazed I was able to ride all the finalists and walk out of the store w/ a bike today.  I lucked out big time.  Let's just say I am more than stoked - I'm even using the word stoked.

So, I am the proud new owner of a.............. nah, I think I'll wait until I can throw up some pics with it.

You can't leave us hanging like that, tease.

Alright Ladies and Gents.... I am leaving today for a nice 10 day vaca at the Lake (Chelan- Google it if your bored... The place rocks).... Remember no internet connection yet at the house(although I think we are buying a verizon card).  I will try to get on somewhere, somehow (maybe on my phone) to check in now and again, but you guys are doing awesome!

I hope everyone has a safe, smart, hard training/racing weekend this weekend, and a nice fun, relaxing, cocktail drinkin' 4th of July next weekend!  Hugs, and Kisses to you all!

Still one big happy family right?!

So I haven't done a darn bit of trainin g this week except some ab work on the train once it empties out. Sure do get funny looks running up and down the cars. Just kidding. I actually was doing legs raises and crunches. Oh and I had to run  for the train on Wednesday. That was an experience I could almost hear my quads screaming when I started to jog. . Way too much work this week. Very long days and to top it off I felt like a bag of smashed butt holes today. (pardon my French). I am starting to feel better so I hope I can do a short ride and run brick tomorrow. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Guy on my bike team sent out for sale, Blackwell Research 50MM clincher for 325... Debating on pulling the trigger, that is such a great price.

Also, I am still trying to figure out which Infinit mix I want.  Thought is to use concentrated bottles for MCM nutrition.  I made my own, just need to compare it to their Marathon mix and Triathlon mix to see if it is something I can use for each, don't really want to buy 2-3 different formulas yet.

Too bad . I heard about the bad storm you guys had out there. How many holes did you actually get in? Tongue out

Great round man. Didn't know you were a golfer. I got to a 10 when I was in high school, but total bogey golfer now.

haha, BK (before kids) golf was what my wife and I did together, we were members at a few country clubs, travelled all around the country and a few other countries playing.  I actually worked for the PGA Tour down in Jacksonville for a year, at my best I was down to a 7.

Now I am lucky if I get in 2 rounds a year, there just aren't many convenient courses and with kids + training not enough time.  Though now my son seems to really like playing maybe will get some more in.  My dad, brother and I are going down to Alabama in September to play for a week so need to get a few rounds in to see if I remember how to hit them.

I hate to ignore a bunch of good posts and go straight to a question, but I need some input...

I am really starting to feel good in the water.  However, while flopping around with the kids this afternoon in the neighbors pool, I realized something...

I don't ever get a good breath IN.  I exhale while under water, but when I turn to breath I don't ever really get a good breath in.  It almost feels like I am just churning air in my mouse and throat rather than getting it to my lungs.

Back to exhaling under water...I came to my realization based on the fact that at some point I have a hard time exhaling.  It's because I'm not inhaling.

HELP!!!

I'm pretty confident, based on this past week, that my swimming will take off if I get this solved.
Thanks.

That was the exact opposite problem I was having, I wasn't exhaling enough under water, I was just exhaling out my nose for some reason, not my mouth.  Now I exhale out both and when I turn I make sure I get a deep breath in.

Is your mouth coming out of the water?  Silly question but is it?  Sometimes people seem to not roll enough to get a breath.

One TI drill I did awhile back was one arm out in front, one arm tight at your side, hand on hip.  When you want to breathe roll.  Pay special attention to when your mouth comes out of the water.  When you go back to regular stroke, turn your head first then roll and your mouth should be at air pretty quickly.

I also used to have the problem where I was only rolling to breath, one of those TI things I either didn't hear or they didn't tell me, my head was stuck to my body, I wasn't turning my head first then rolling, I was just rolling to breathe.

LOL, trying to explain to you how they taught us to breath in my Martial Arts classes, I know how to do it but I can't think of how to explain it, basically breathing with your diaphram (sp?) not just sucking wind through your nose and mouth, that is how I breath in when swimming to make sure I get a full breath.  Maybe Rob can explain that better.

Ironic - I sent that to a dozen or so people at work about 6 months ago, saying it was from one of my co-workers family album... I guess karma isn't very original.

So without further ado, my new ride.  I picked up a Cannondale Synapse 5.  I took it out on an easy paced 39 mile ride today with some friends, my longest ride ever.  The three biggest differences over my old ride:

1 - it's the right size, my old bike was much too large

2 - it's super responsive.  It accelerates quickly, almost feels like the bike is going to scoot out from under me when I step on it.  It is also very nimble.

3 - I'm completely surpised at the vibration dampening.  It's carbon in the fork and seat post and the seat stays have a vibration eliminating design.  Night and day difference from my old tank.

Quickly checking in before my hill workout today......

Reuben--I definitely HAD that problem.  I don't most of the time now for a few reasons 1) you need to stay on your side longer to get enough air, make sure your opposite hand stays extended in the water for you to do it, 2) rotate--are you rotating enough to get air?  and 3)  slow down -exhale evenly and give yourself enough time to get the air you need.  The most important for me was staying on my side longer.  The way I got over it is using the catch up drill.  In fact, I use that as my stroke right now.  My only issue is I take in too much air.....not a good scenario burping at the pool!

Matt--love the bike!!!

Steve--if you are still around have fun.  We will make Ryan fill in for you while you are away.  He does check in, right?

Racers--don't forget to check in post race and have fun.

later,
Suzy

I'm always available! Anyone should feel free to email me as well: ryan at fpasset dot com. I will gladly answer anything to the best of my abilities... and good luck to everyone who's racing this weekend! My girlfriend (= Steve's wife's sister) and Steve's sister Michelle are both toeing the line at the Seattle Rock 'n Roll half mary this morning as we speak, so I'm heading out the door to watch.

I believe someone on here (John?) is doing the Buffalo Spring 70.3, so best of luck there! Be mindful of the heat; take on enough fluids so that you're not dehydrated (which can really put you in a world of pain on the run); and remember my #1 favorite race-day thought:

Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast

Don't sprint the swim, don't rush the transitions, don't mash the bike, don't overstride the run. Keep it loose. It's just a long, well-supported training day... knock it out!

Reub-  Just a thought, but I was having similar problems a couple of months ago and got someone on the swim team to take a look.  I was rotating my head to get air AFTER i rotated my body, thus causing me to have a short window of time to get air.  She instructed me to turn my head BEFORE i rotated.  Something to try anyway.

Steve- Thanks for the hugs and kisses dude!

Matt...I like the bike.  I know how you feel when you got one that is making some noise. I just went on a long ride and mine started sounding like it was going to fall apart.  Got to take it in and see what is happening.

Everyone have a good weekend.  Off to the lake for a couple days.
