Question on race day logistics for spectators:

We're staying at the La Quinta Inn on Sherman...about a mile and a half away from transition.  My wife, mom, and my 3 kids will be our cheering section.    Is there a place near the run/bike turnaround where they can set up camp for the day?   The older kids will have their scooters to get around,  but with the baby (22 months) I was thinking of bringing the wagon to load her, chairs, and all the other junk that our family carts around so they can get down there easily, then just stake a claim to a spot for the whole day...and walk back to the hotel if need be.

Thoughts suggestions?

That hotel is right on the bike course. They could watch the bike from there and then the corner of 23rd and Mullan (3 blocks south) is a good place to watch the run from. Then as you are heading out from there on your last loop of the run, they could make their way to the finish line.
Awesome.

Okay for those familiar with the town and the course, we are staying at the Super 8 on West Appleway I believe?? is that anywhere near the course? Have the crew head down to the hot corner?? In laws, wife, 5 and 2 yr old boys. Sure if it is a hot day they will want to scoot back to the hotel for a while.

Hey neighbor, we're staying there too.  I'll keep an eye out for you and your little ones.  I'll be there on Friday then my wife and kids will get there Saturday.  If you see us walking around with a red-headed teenage girl, that's us.

Unfortunately Super 8 is a ways from the course and parking in the downtown area on race day is a bear as well. Should definately have the crew plan on walking a ways - definately going to need a wagon/stroller. The nice thing is there is a huge shady park with a great play area for the kiddos where the transition area is and it's pretty close to hot corner so with the right gear your family could hang out there all day and be comfortable. It's pretty tough to drive anywhere in CDA on race day.

I have a post-race question/help request for any CdA or Spokane locals.  I am driving up from San Diego.  Since I made all my plans, my brother got engaged and his wedding is on 2 July. I absolutely didn't want to do some quick, post-race drive back to SD and then to TX for the wedding. So, Wed morning, post race, I'm flying out of Spokane to TX for the wedding, and then flying back on Sunday (July 3rd).  I found a good parking garage and all, but at the same time, I'm really wary about leaving my bike/race wheels and stuff in my car at parking garage, regardless of how "secure" it is.  So, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to let me store my bike at their place until I come back on the 3rd and head back to California.  I would probably need to drop it off on Tuesday as I have a Wed. morning flight.....so, if anyone has any garage space they'd be interested in sharing to keep my steed safe, I'd be most grateful.

You Clydes!

I'll be the captain of the teensies.  5'4" 125 here!

Also, I've decided that I will be wearing my favorite running tutu.  That should make the marathon less painful.

I'm part of the little crowd, not quite as thin but with some power--5'3 and 138ish here (now we're a dating service it seems--I'm single, will take applications--haha, careful, it could be the taper crazies talking).

Oh, but NO tutu's for me...couldn't pay me, but sure love seeing others doing it!

I see a friendly rivalry developing here.  Count me in on team teensie.  5'4" on a good day and 125 as well!  Maybe we should take bets on whether team clydes fares better than team teensie

Hi all,

I have been following this thread and not posting (now, i dont seem to know why) but I would like to say thanks for this thread and all of the info.  This is my first full IM and it's nice to see that others are going through what I am.

Also wanted to say train safely out there.  There just was a news report about a kid who was training for an Ironman sometime next month (dont know which one) and was hit by a truck in Pierce County Wa and has had brain sugery etc since yesterday.  I know I felt safer on my trainer today than I do on my usual outside rides.

Hope to see you all out there.

Okay thanks. We are bringing a sit and stand stroller with us figuring they will wear out before days end but the park will be nice. So any parking suggestions on where they should shoot for? And also will it be possible for some but not all of them to come down to the swim start and then head back to the hotel or is it a complete pain and they should all pack up and head down and plan on being there all day?

The past two years, the crew I've been with has been able to get good parking over near the baseball field that is located near the park where transition is.  This is very close to everything, including one of the most amazing playgrounds ever--you'll wish you were 6 and could go play on it. The ball park sells a few concessions too at decent prices.

Did someone call out the Coeur d'Alene clydes? I forced myself to stop weighing a while back, but at 5-foot-8 and 230ish pounds I'm pretty dang certain I'm still in that category.

That, by the way, is my weight minus the melons.

And I'm not sure I could buy enough Body Glide to prevent significant chafing and/or to avoid perma-melon marks, so it's unlikely I'll be sporting this getup on race day. Sorry!

Hmmm... would honey badger wear a tutu?  I think he may be too nasty for that.

Although the idea of doing the Ironman marathon in a tutu is amazing!

There is good parking by the baseball field, as mentioned, but it gets filled pretty early by athletes getting there to get ready for the day.  If you can't find parking there,  you should be able to a couple blocks away at the college.  From there it's about a 10 minute walk back over to transition and the park.

Being a clyde at ironman is definitly a double edged sword.

Pros:

1) clydes love the swim...much like the humpback gracefully cuts through the water.

2) Nobody confuses our manly physique for the fairer sex before, during, or after IM.

3) Gotta love the downhills.

Cons:

1) OMG, why is this hill so frickin' steep?  Wonder how much lighter I would be if I amputated a leg below the knee?

2) Marathon, Marathon, Marathon.

3) Finding finishers gear in XXL is hella tough.

On another note, my experiment to lose weight be eliminating beer from my diet was a complete bust.  I have been dry for better part of 6 weeks.  Not only did I not lose weight, but I gained weight...during the peak of IM training.  Was at 200 lbs at the start of the 6 week cycle, finished at ~205.  All I can figure is that instead of nursing ice cold 100 calorie light beer, I was throwing spoonfuls of PB down the old hatch.  So, broke my self-imposed sobriety last night and killed a couple of beers.  I hope to employ this strategy to get back down to race weight of 200 lbs.

For locals as well, I am eyeing the weather there every day....  The 10 day forecast out has Saturday 06/24 at partly sunny and 71 for a high....   How accurate are the weather guys??   Partly sunny and 71 works perfect for me, but in Kansas City they rarely get it right the night before let alone 10 days out.....  Thoughts?

I have to ask, why are we so worried about our race numbers?  Is it a confirmation?  "Oh Yah I'm in this thing for real!"  I feel like a little kid waiting for something cool.  When in fact it's just associating a number to my name.  You would think just seeing my name on the participant list would be good enough.

CDA weather can literally change overnight. Case in point, we went up to ride and run over Memorial Day weekend. Friday night when we went to sleep in CDA the forecast for a high of 54 and 60% chance of rain We woke up 8 hours later to 20% chance of rain (never rained) and a high of 60

When you leave for CDA next week (less than 5 days out or so) is when the weather *might* be close to accurate.

In other news the water temp went from 56.6 to 54.1
