I did not refuse!!!! There was no refusal. I can show you the texting transcript. Geeeeez. In fact, RP never told me what time to run (all I said was I was due somewhere at 11am). Let's call a spade a spade, buddy.

Harumph.

I might refuse your most recent invitation you sent me...

I don't get it.  Is the implication you put your bike into hibernation or on a trainer?

John, those pix are hilarious!!

Congrats to the racers this weekend. Sounds like everyone had good days especially Kim with a 4th place AG, while stopping for character pix!

Serious question! I'm running my first marathon this October. I've never run more than 14 miles before, but after the long runs my heels hurt so dang bad for the rest of the day and my ankle and heel flexibility is pretty low. I'm a heel striker. Is this something that just comes with being unconditioned to long runs or am I using the wrong pair of shoes?

How much are you stretching?  I have a lot of heel pain in my left foot that comes from my left leg being so tight, despite the stretching I had been doing.  I'm trying to work through it now with a PT.

Just a thought.

Are you really a heel striker? Maybe your shoes make you heel strike. Why not try some shoes with a lower heel and try to land on your mid foot. It's a bit too close to your race to make too many changes though so be careful.

Does it hurt in the morning when you get up?  Typically heel pain comes from a tight soleus/gastroc and not from the strike itself.  The goal is to really get rid of that tightness before you do your long runs to prevent damage.  You can then work on it post run to keep it that way.  I use a TP massage ball and the small roller/foam block to do mine.  When I keep up with it, I'm golden.  When I don't I can start feeling a bit of pain too.

If you are a heel striker, you could consider shortening your stride and improving your turnover.  Count the number of left elbows that pass by you in 10 seconds and multiple by 6 when you're running.  Your goal should be around 95 or more.   I usually have 16-17x6=98-102.  When I get lazy late in a run that number drops so I go back to thinking about it.  It has helped me mitigate a lot of lower extremity injuries.

Happy September MG! Thought I would post a short update.

My knee is gradually getting better.

I "ran" for the first time since May yesterday. It was a run/walk as I timed my kids on the track as training for their 1 mile run in 2 weeks.

I will not be racing IMFL. But will most likely Sherpa for a friend.

I did sign up for the Raleigh 70.3 Ironman on June 2, 2013. Already has 1500 signed up with a cap of 2250. Anyone looking for a destination race here next year send me a PM.

Melissa- I used to be a big heel striker and usually delevoped pain in my knee bc of it.  I eventually modified my gaite with the help of barefoot running.  Like David, I think a shoe with less of a heel is also beneficial.

? for the MG, what's your favorite motivational sports movie? Need something good for relaxing on Saturday.  So far my list of possibilities include Breaking Away, Run Fatboy Run, Chariots of Fire, and Saint Ralph. Other ideas?

9 Ball Diaries ......  but only because Cyclocross Season finally starts this weekend!

Plus I get to finally meet you on Sunday AM and cheer Minnow on to yet another blazing fast PR.  I will be working at swim bag drop off and most likely will have my team cycling jacket on if it is as chilly as usual.  Make sure you say "Hi" in your state of nervousness!!!
