Redknight - 2009-01-02 2:40 PM Over the past few workouts I have been putting in longer times and find I am very tired about 3-4 hours after I am done. What type of nutrition/fueling would you suggest during my workouts of 1 - 2+ hours. I have generally been using only water but I think I need more. That may be why I am getting tired at the end of my workouts also.

I try to incorporate some fuel anytime my workout is going to be longer than 60 minutes.  Typically I'll just eat gels as I run or ride, about every 30 minutes.  I also try to have a protien shake soon after completing longer workouts because I've found this really helps with recovery.

Of course, the fatigue could be related to your advanced chronological condition :P

Have a good weekend everybody!!

Peace

Well Rob, I am no nutrition expert either, but for runs of more than 1 hour, I will generally use a gu at the 45-50 minute mark and take it with some water. For the bike, I usually sip at an energy drink and alternate with water. 2 bottles usually seems about right for me on a 3 hour ride if not too hot. Trainer rides, I sweat like crazy so end up drinking one bottle or even a little more for one hour. Right now I am using Cytomax, but might switch to Infinit when I run out and once HIM training begins. For swimming, I am not doing longer than one hour workouts but sometimes I will do a gu beforehand if I wake up hungry.

The other important thing to remember is to refuel with some type of recovery drink that has protein in it within 30 minutes of finishing your workout. It is really important to fuel your muscles, because that is what causes not only fatigue but also muscle breakdown.

I'm interested to see what others are doing since I have just been experimenting over the past year and a half.

Sorry been a stranger the last week or so.  Have been at home working out and doing some side work which has been taking up all my time.  LoL it's 10:51ESt and I have a computrainer ride paused on Machine 1, Playing music and typing this on Machine 2 and Compiling some code on Machine 3, can I multitask or what : )

Signed up for my first Mountain bike race, should be interesting, I didn't think they went 23 miles, but looking at the description it is just technical not steep.

Hope everyone had a great new year.

Rob

What are you eating before your work outs? immediately afterwards?

When I first started running longer distances, I found that I was tired later in the day, but I think that is because your body is getting used to pushing for longer periods of time.  While I don't eat/drink on training runs of 1-2 hours, you could certainly try a gel/water or a sports beverage (my choice is Infinit) and see if you feel stronger.  You might also consider what you are eating 1-2 hours before running.  I run in the morning so oatmeal is my standard.

I would also recommend eating within 30 minutes of finishing up.  This will help replace lost glycogen when your body is most willing to accept it.  My choice is usually an apple/peanut butter or an open faced turkey sandwich on Ezekial Bread.  The goal is to get carbs plus some protein into your body quickly.  If your gut really isn't into food after running you could also try chocolate milk, a Slimfast or recovery drink.  Personally, I would rather eat real stuff, but that is just me.

I bought some of the 360 Protein powder from Whole Foods, has great carbs and protein I have seen in a powder, just mix with milk (makes chocolate milk).  I use that as my recovery drink.

Just got back from Gym.....can you say GONG SHOW! I usually am there at opening on the weekend(7am) so I get out of the house beofer the kids are up. And let me tell you-7am on at Saturday morning, there were tons of new faces there. We'll see how many last past February.

Was thining about it this morning.  Only 9 weeks now til my 1st Tri!! And in that time, I've got work trip for 4 days coming up, and my wisdom teeth getting taken out. So I will need to optimize my training for sure.

Hey there - just checking in while I watch some footballSmile.  I'm probably taking a rest day from training today.  My feet are giving me some trouble and we have a basement that is desperately in need of cleaning out.  When the kids clean their rooms, everything they no longer want goes down there so the junk builds up.

I hope I can keep up with my workouts once I go back to work on Monday.  Having the last 2 weeks off was nice - I could hit the gym or do my workout during the day, whenever I had the time.  It's going to be a little more difficult now with work taking up most of my day.

I hope everyone is having a good new year so far!

Have a great day everyone! I am at work...again...but had a great walk with our dog this morning at the beach (36 degrees! yikes that is cold for us) She had soooo much fun...I am told she is sleeping in the sunniest spot in the house right now...wish i were there, too. Today is a rest day, tomorrow, long run.

Trevor. I know hwhat you mean about a gong show at our club too. I was there for about an hour and a half and I saw so many new faces I lost count. And I go to a very small club.

I also currently have a bad case of hives on my torso and cannot run. My hives come up as large welts and not just small bumps. Just putting on a shirt is painful and actually running and having the shirt rub against them and sweat running into them is not nice. I think I may just do a little ab workout today. If all goes as usual they should be gone or at least bearable in a couple of days and then back to heavy workouts. I will probably swim on Monday to keep the training going.

Happy 2009 everyone.  Sorry to have been such a stranger lately. I developed a severe chest cold New Year's Eve and it is just now starting to break.  The hubby has been trying to get me to go to the quick clinic and be checked for bronchitis (sp?) and now that I am shooing the inlaws out (after a 15 day visit, ughCry) maybe things will calm down for me and I'll start to feel better.

 Keep trucking everyone.

Looks like the crud has me for the day too.  I have had a cough for the last couple of days and today is supposed to be my long run day, but I just aint feelin it.  I am not feeling that bad, but coughing and running doesn't sound like much fun.  So, I think I will opt for playing a little ball with my 4 yr old.  Hope everybody is doing well and getting a great start on the year.

Hi All!!

So some great news - I got in the pool today.  First time since about August, I know, that's not good.  After my last tri I had no desire to get back in the water.  I let my Y membership expire and had no other pool access.  Today I went with a co-worker who wants to do his first tri this year.  So I tried to give him some help and keep track of my laps.  I know I was in the water for 50 minutes and really didn't break for long, except a resting after every 100 or 200 yards.  A few moments of instruction for him and I got back on it.

I really felt great in the water, I still have a lot of work to do before my first tri, but I'm ahead of where I was this time last year (I had no stroke and had problems with breathing).

Anyway - here's to a new season with new friends!

Happy New Years!  It's a great day for a run here!

I have a pedal question.  I need some new ones and I think I am going to get these Shimanos:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=24075&subcategory_ID=5245

Has anyone used them??  Opinions??  I know there are as many opinions on pedals as there are on saddles...  Just wondering if anyone has used them?

Karen

Hey Karen. Those look like the ones I just bought. The guy at the bike store said they were very good with no wobble or looseness on the pedal. He said they were the same ones as he was using. Unfortunately up here in the frozen north I won't be able to try them out for a few months.

I just ordered them.  I'll let you know if I like them.  Even though I am not as north as you, I won't be trying them outside for quite some time.  I hate the cold!!  This is the first winter I have run outside (well, as long as it is above about 20 and not raining - I really am a cold weather sissy!), but I am not up for trying my bike in the cold!!  Until then, they will get a workout on the dreaded trainer.

Thanks,

K

Hey All,

Well, after a long 2 week vacation for the holidays, lots of eating, lots of drinking and little training, I am ready to kick it back into gear.  Plan on 45min or so run after the Ravens-Dolphins game.  Not looking forward to seeing the chaos at the gym when I go in tomorrow.  I definitely need to get back in the pool and on the bike though.  I've only got 11 weeks till my first tri of this year, so it's time to focus.

Happy 2009 to all!!!

Well, got my first swim of the year taken care of.  Sunday workouts with my Masters group is usually 90 minutes, but because it is the New Year's swim, they made it 2 hours!!  Workout consisted of 100 meter swims x 109, on the minute.  We broke them up into sets of 10, with 30 seconds rest between sets.  I am happy to find that I was able to keep this pace up throughout the workout.  I did the math in my head and that is over 5K worth of swimming.  I've never thought I could do that!!!  Hopefully that carries over into tri season and I can do a lot better than my BOP swim history last year.

Bad news is that I'm going to be tired the rest of the day..

Nick, Over 3 miles of swimming? holy cow!  That is really all I can say. Surprised  I am dreamin' of the day I can swim 1.2m.

Jeremy, nice job on getting back into the pool today.  It is a great feeling when you know you have improved a lot in a year.  I had a lesson this afternoon and am always so much more committed to getting better after it.

Barry,  it is never bad to take a rest day when you need it.  Tomorrow you will be stronger and up to running one extra mile, maybe even swimming a 5K! Laughing

Scott, great to have you back on the board.  I hope you will do your part to raise us up from the bottom of the page!

Me, I took an aerobic rest day and had an interesting lesson with my swim coach.  I am slower than molasses so we focused on 50s at 90% with the last 25 being faster than the first (can you say breathless and ready to die?).  Also had the pleasure of being introduced to the drag bag (see blog for an explanation if you are interested).

Let's get back at it tomorrow!

Suzy

Honestly, the swim didn't feel so bad, since it was broken down into manageable portions.  Now, I just need to learn how to do flip turns.  When I put forth an effort at flip turns over the summer, I ended up doing some messed up corkscrew thing.   Maybe I can try it again soon.

Oh, I am starting to figure out the training log tool and it will slowly be getting filled out.  I'm starting with the most recent and working my way back.  That's another good thing these Forerunners are good for.

Speaking of Forerunners, has anybody else had problems with theirs not making the audible beeps anymore (when you run timed interval/rest periods, or going below/above pace thresholds)?  Mine doesn't make any noises anymore and I feel I can't really use a key function of what the Forerunner (mine is a 205) is good for.

-Nick

Steve - Love Love Love the pictures!!!  How beautiful?!?!  Got in a couple of runs and a bike since the first of the year.  The last run was great, and the 405 is working out really well.  It's motivating to be able to see your pace as you go.  It was 77 and sunny here on Saturday, so I couldn't pass up a bike...today...it's raining ice outside!  Weird weather!  Looks like everyone that's posting is haveing a great start to the new year!!!  I've already lost a pound...very exciting stuff!

Good morning all. Busy with the renewed job search now. I was just getting used to not working. Oh well. Such is life. Great pics Steve.

Hey Nick. Don't worry too much about your flip turns unless you have to do your tri swims in a pool. I use a straight touch turn and it works fine for me. You don't need to flip in an OWS unless someone runs over you ;-).
