im right along with you. need to keep it going at least an hour a week. no more cold turkey! this is too much pain trying to get it back after being totally fit prior to quitting.

i take the following:

-men's multi
-nordic natural ultimate omega fish oil 1000 mg
-a glucosamine/chondroitin double or triple strength dose
-wobenzym (homeopathic anti-imflammatory)
-psyllium husk see (fiber)
-red bean yeast/CQ-10/no flush Niacin blend
-vit e
-calcium/mag/zinc blend
-baby aspirin

there has been recent talk that vitamin d is important in recovery/prevention.

my blood numbers over 5 years every 6 mos. have been phenomenal but is it the supplements or the exercise, or both? its certainly not the diet which is low carb until the first quarter of 2009.

I'm doing Crossfit 3x a week which in 2 months I've seen real gains in strength. Not sure it will help me come IM time but I like it and for women my age doing strength training I think is important.

I've been reading Ride For Life (how to ride to 100).  They strongly recommend weight training for continued health.

I looked into a Cross fit gym.  They want lots of $$.  Probably worth it, and I'll probably try it when I have a Saturday open.  Even now I'm having trouble getting my work-outs done and the rest of life too.  Got to simplify.

Perhaps if I cut out work. Tongue out

I am following the BT Intermediate Half-IM Plan for Kansas 70.3 in June and then will do a bridge plan into the full for IMFL.  I am doing approximately 2 hours of weights each week.  However, it is all fluid movement exercises with intermediate weight dumbells.  I do that at home, because I spend enough time each week away from the family in the pool swimming or being a basement dweller on the bike trainer.  The plan also has me incorporating much more core than I am used to, and despite the initial feeling of being kicked in stomach the benefits are paying off in feeling more balanced in all three discplines.  I was what you call a "core-ignorer" in the past and it was time to develop those abs, even if they are still shrouded behind a bit of soft protection.

I've got about 2 hours of strength per week right now, with an additional hour or so of core, spread out over the week. Unfortunately, those workouts are always the first to go.... Can someone please motivate me and sing the praises of doing work on the core!?!

i am supposed to be doing 1:40 of legs and core work a week.  I hate weights, so they are the first to go.  I know they are beneficial, but I just don't have any fun with it.

This time of year I like to put in more strength training just for a change of pace.  Plus, having done the Goofy Challenge a couple of weeks ago, it is nice to have the change.  As the season gets closer and the rides, runs and swims get longer and more frequent, the strength training will get the trimmed back.  But I consider core training an essential part of my training plan.  What gets cut back is the upper body and leg strength training.

if vanity doesn't motivate you, then dragging your legs around because you have a soft core ought to. i struggle in marathon and long run if i haven't worked on lower abs.

I've been trying to work on my core- I have been following some of the workouts in Core Performance. Since I havent' been able to run for a month due to hip pain I think its hip burtis (sp?), I have been trying to work on my swim techniques as well even though I hate swim drills

Until I find some core work motivation picutres (and I have seen some) this will have to do.

I noticed that I run better if I do a core workout just before running.   Any one else?  Seemed wierd at first, but maybe the stabilization helps the run? ??

sorry no picutres yet.  I'm supposed to be working - not goofing off on BT

I'm going to go w/ the vanity approach.  I'm working my core and legs so I look better in my spandex.  I did the holiday eating and slacked off from the gym.  I enjoy the weights but always seem to leave out the ab work...not this time...I want to look my best come summer...call me vain...it's true.

I do yoga once a week (and usually we do a lot of ab work) and when I think about it I do a dumbell routine and crunches at home. I keep telling my kids that I have a 6-pack, but it's their fault no one can see it.

Wow dude you are the man!! We've had almost the whole month of jan with icy roads so all training has been indoors.  Which leaves me very unmotivated.  I think my biggest month last year training for my IM was barely equal to your jan. Keep it up!

Yah my volume is no where near PhatKnots but I do what I can. My mom has some serious medical issues and I go to Minnesota to help as much as I can. February she is having surgery at Mayo and may be in the hospital a month surgeon said.

I'm pleased with my January as my power is going up on my bike, seem to found my running groove again after slacking much of the fall post IM Canada, and after working on swim drills to fix my bad habits for last 2.5 months my swim coach says I can now do normal swim training. Plus now I can do full range chest to the ground push ups!! And hit a new PB in deadlift max. by 30#.

January:
Bike:6h 52m 56s  - 118 Mi
Run:13h 50m 17s  - 69.4 Mi
Swim:8h 30m 33s  - 16350 Yd
Crossfit:11h 00m
Walking:30m 30s
Yoga:2h 33m

Bike 9.83

Run 21.54

Swim 7.5

Skipped a lot of workouts this month due to fatigue and mental attitude. It has been really difficult to get back to training seriously (mentally) since IMFL. Especially since I now know what it takes to prepare for an ironman. We decided it would be better to take time off now instead of burning out mid season. I've got new goals and a new attitude. February is going to be a great month.

January's totals:

Swim: 5h 26m 12s - 14700 Yd

Pretty good month for me. Most of the bike miles were on the trainer, so I'm looking forward to some warmer weather and getting outside soon.
