Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Price goes up on the Kansas 5150 tomorrow at midnight. Guess I'll sign up, it will be my first committment for 2013. It's along the same course as IMKS 70.3 so would be a good tune up I suppose. I think I might go for a 5 or 6 mile run today, it's sub freezing but not like 10 degrees or anything. I can't remember the last time I ran outside. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Johnnkc - 2012-12-30 10:41 AM NAME: John STORY: Ive been somewhere between the Couch and Avid Cyclist for 10 years. I am determined this year dramatically step things up. Coming off a severe sprained ankle but feel like I am on the downhill side of recovery. I am a single father of 4 and my children are finally (almost self sufficient). I have several friends that are triathletes and would like to rise to that enviable level of fitness. Work quite a bit and have trouble with consistency. GOALS: For sure a Sprint FAMILY STATUS: Single father of 4. Trying to talk 2 kids into joining me on this journey. CURRENT TRAINING: Recovering since July so just starting to ramp things back up. At the moment its mostly gym treadmill. WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MEMBER OF THIS GROUP: I will provide the opportunity for lots of advice) Hey John, are you in the Kansas City area? If so, there are two others in this group in the area (Jen/crazylife99) and myself. THere's a list of local races being maintained in the Kansas state forum if you're interested. You picked a good mentor group, it's jam packed with serious talent and great people! |

Pro 4824 Houston | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN I practice hot Hatha yoga (97 degree infrared heat) twice a week. I feel it helps me stay injury free and is great for sweating out toxins and recovery. This morning Ken joined me for the first time and did great. He purchased a small package so we should be able to get in a few more sessions before the teenager goes back to school. The LT test went well yesterday, my quads are still a bit grumpy and Ken and I are going back to the cycling studio tomorrow. I will do some intervals on the IMAZ course. Monday is our annual polar bear plunge at a local private lake for triathletes and scuba divers only. Should be refreshing! |

About to get ready for my run...no snow...but I hear the community sprinklers going off...now sure how much of it I can take. I'lll take the 19F, snow covered fields but clear roads here. |

5,000 miles from home | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Welcome John! Today's early am workout was 1 x 10lb lifts for 1 hour 23 minutes otherwise known as driveway shoveling. Fun is. Thinking of the group members in the 808 state and wondering what I am doing here... After I went out for a longish run of 10+ miles, the roads were slippery and messy which made the going slow. It was quite windy too I'm glad to be out if that frozen tundra now. I just realized that the BT log only syncs about half my workouts from training peaks, so I tried to fix up December. Despite being a runner since 1984 I only started keeping a training log in July of this year, so one of my goals for 2013 is to keep track of workouts and races. I am super impressed and inspired by everyone's year end totals. And a question to those if you that do yoga? Was the beginning a bit rocky? The reason I ask is that I saw a sports medicine person early this month for some bothersome neck pain. They told me incidentally they found my whole body was a tight knotted mess, in particular my hamstrings were the tightest they had ever seen on a live person. Ever. The cadaver comparison scared me, so I started doing a yoga for runners program. On the positive side I can now touch my toes when I bend over. On the negative my legs are quite achy, and I feel weaker / slower. Wondering if this is normal or should I quit the yoga? |

About to get ready for my run...no snow...but I hear the community sprinklers going off...now sure how much of it I can take. You have to watch out for those sprinklers. You just never know when one will come on unexpectedly and soak you. You end up with wet feet and then blisters.... dangerous. Much worse than dodging snow plows like I was. |

I just realized that the BT log only syncs about half my workouts from training peaks, so I tried to fix up December. Except now you have double workouts for everything. Unless you are in the middle of cleaning it up. Despite being a runner since 1984 I only started keeping a training log in July of this year, so one of my goals for 2013 is to keep track of workouts and races. I am super impressed and inspired by everyone's year end totals. And a question to those if you that do yoga? Was the beginning a bit rocky? On the negative my legs are quite achy, and I feel weaker / slower. Wondering if this is normal or should I quit the yoga? I don't know anything about yoga so I can't comment there but a few sessions of massage therapy sure helped with my tight hamstrings last year. It was downright painful at first but once they had loosened up, they stayed that way. |

Yes, one transition at marina judging from the map. Attached is link to course maps. Yes, hill is still in play. Just ride your arse off this winter/spring you'll be fine. That hill is harder in the HIM as it's at mile 49, oly distance shouldn't feel so bad. |

Member 5452 NC | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN dustytrails - 2012-12-30 12:43 PM Welcome....what are ages of potential tri kids? The oldest is 6 and by far the most accomplished triathlete in the family. He did four races the past summer - in his AG he won two, 2nd in one and 3rd in his first. He's a year-round swimmer, so he dominated the swim. He isn't that strong on the bike. He last race he got passed on the bike and the other kid put a pretty good lead on him. He almost chased him down in the chute. If he had just about 10 more meters, he would have taken it down. This is him in the finishing chute. They had him losing by two seconds. It's all incredibly fun. If the 3yo daughter takes an interest, she will be fierce.

Member 112 Danielson Ct | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN nine inches of snow last night, 29 degrees and ice packed roads. Made today's ride real fun. Cleared out a couple driveways so not a bad workout day overall. Quick nap and out for dinner to beat the inflated prices and limited menu of New Years eve. |

Been away from my computer but meant to comment. I think you are there pretty easily. I always use VDOT & MacMillan as my guide when it comes to race expectations and have found it extremely reliable for me. I evaluate the VDOT paces from my last race, make a determination regarding my current fitness and recent training (better, worse, same) and execute my race based on that. I am pretty reliant on my watch (average pace) during shorter races to make sure my effort is high and where I want it and have had good success with it. |

Decided to back off the run intervals today and just run EZ in the new snow. Planned day off tomorrow and hopefully I am good for the 6 mile race on Tuesday! The race has a huge hill at the start and it is going to be cold (22-25 F) and windy for the race but a fun way to start the year and usually a pretty competitive race. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Just about 66 miles running in the past week, on a sore calf. Everything was easy or less, so never really stressed things, walked as needed for short bits. Calf should never feel like it's working. Ran 6/7 days and twice a day for each. No way was I getting to that total without all the doubles. Both runs today were great, and well within the normal easy range again. |
