If you're talking about that Nike + iPod thing, the answer is no. However, it is remarkably accurate in measuring distance without ever being calibrated! Laughing

Thanks. That is what I was talking about. I bought one to play around with, but decided to stick with the GPS option, so uninstalled the software to free up space in my iPod.

But I think it would be interesting to see my cadence while running.

I agree with Whizzzz on the road bike idea. I've talked to people who did the tri bike only option, and they wish they had a road bike. If you're getting one bike, a road bike will be able to do more things. If you plan on eventually having both, I still think road bike first, then tri bike. Even in the Tour, the pro riders use what is essentially a tri bike for time trials, and when they're in the crowds, and the more technical stages, they use road bikes. Just my thoughts.

pretty bike!!

OK, I am finally coming up to a race!   My 4th tri, but longest.  I know putting in an extra hard week is no replacement for the solid weeks I should have put in months ago. But I know I am going to finish.  Last year I did a race without reaching the goal of "do something at least for 20 minutes 5 times a week".   it was awful.....   I am feeling ok about the swim and bike, and I can always walk the 5 miles.

But I need a solid week now, for me and for the race.   Inspire me, nudge me, prod me...... drive out to reno and kick my azz - just get me out there!

Sweet bike Nancy (hence the name dolce)!

Alright everyone, we've been relatively in our own little worlds for a couple of weeks. What's going on with everyone?

For those of us in our inaugural years, what have you learned so far?

Whizzzzz had some great lessons learned from the SoR on leaving something in the tank for that pesky run.

Me? I'm finally getting back into a more serious training mode for my September HIM. The letdown that occurs after a big race (in my case, Grandma's Marathon) can be difficult to overcome. It sure helps to have another "A" race on the docket to renew the sense of dedication via impending doom. I've been spending a lot more time on the steed stretching out weekend rides and adding in some runs to get back into the swing of things. Now all I need is to get into the water a little more often . . .

To all Illinois/Wisconsin members of the Whizzzzz Posse (and anyone else willing to make the trek), I extend the invitation to come to the beautiful Lake Geneva west end to explore the LG Tri bike, run and swim venues. I will be happy to serve as the local tour guide for anyone interested.

THANK YOU TODD for getting us rolling!

I've been sort of out of it for a week... last week was my taper... then the race... Ugh. I'll tell you this much... I've done 2 other HIM races prior to this one, and this was by far the hardest. I went into this race with time goals and certain expectations for myself, and when I saw I didn't meet them straight out of the WATER even, I got freaked out and a bit desperate. I knew I could lay down a solid bike, and I expected to have a good swim... but my swim turned out mediocre and now it was all up to the BIKE.

So away I went. Even though I stayed in Z3 throughout the ride, I possibly was in too hard of a gear... My quads started burning about an hour into it... and I knew it was going to be a long day... but I couldn't stop, because I was TRYING to give myself a time cushion for the run! I didn't EAT or DRINK appropriately on the bike. I didn't spend much time this year working on a NUTRITION plan... I just did what I did last year... and I only did it half heartedly. I drank only 1/3 of 2 of my bottles of Gatorade + Endurolytes. So I was already short calories and salt. I ate my bar and a couple of gu's... but NOT DRINKING was a huge mistake.

Turned in a 2:46 bike, which averages just over 20 mph. Too fast. Too hard of an effort. Too little fluids...not enough calories in v. calories expended. Left me with very little in the tank for the run.

The run was miserable.

In addition to having set rather high expectations for myself... I seemed to have lost the element of fear/respect for the distance. It's hard. You can't just pop off a HIM race. It takes preparation/strategy and attention. I figured: I'd done it twice before... I know what to expect, I'll just get it done.

No.

It's short enough where you might think you can be fassssssssst, but it's long enough that if you don't meticulously pace yourself, you are going to be in a WORLD of hurt. Nutrition is the 4th event. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Know what works. And don't abandon your plan on race day. (I actually THREW one of my Gatorade bottles AWAY at an aid station!) Picked up water instead. Not smart. I made some ludicrous decisions on Sunday. It's not life or death, but we are in this sport to have fun, push ourselves, and hopefully, do well... not cause ourselves unnecessary suffering!

Lesson Learned.

So, that's why I haven't been around as much. I'm back now. And on to Pleasant Prairie (an Olympic) and marathon training... and the Grand Columbian (HIM in Sept).

Race Photos are here .

Hope everyone else is doing well! What HAVE you been up to!???!? Laughing

I'm still here.  After Subaru, I had what Hangloose called an athleticoma!  To some degree I still have it!  My "A" race is on the 11th of August and I haven't swam at all. I've gone out and rode the bike course and thought I was toast.  In hindsight it wasn't that bad.  My problems with that ride was that it was f***in hot and humid at 4 p.m., I hadn't eaten enough all day prior to the ride and I certainly hadn't hydrated well enough.  I have absolute confidence that I can finish this tri--I have just lost my motivation.  I don't know why I just have.  McFuzz and I were talking last night and I realized that at this point my goal isn't to place or anything like that--it's to get my butt out there and do something.

The last few days I have felt lethargic and crappy.  I went for a run the other day hoping it would bring back some of my energy.  I think it took whatever was left!!! I just don't know!!  I'm going to try for another run today (we are going out with McFuzz's office tonight) to offset what I do to my body tonight.  I have to say that if I know that I'm going out at night for dinner or whatever I'm pretty good at getting a workout in!  I guess that's good.

Well, that's where I am.  Not sure where I'm going but I figure I'll know when I get there!!!

Well, after my first tri, in which I came in 370th out of 377th, I decided I had better get my act in gear. I have a tougher tri, West Point, August 19th, and an Olympic distance on September 2nd, I think. I know that I will be DFL at the Oly distance if I don't drown in Lake George first. The advantage - I swim in it all of the time. I just added a sprint down the Jersey shore at the end of September - so that should be my last race this season. Maybe. We'll see.

At the moment, I'm in a life imposed lull in training. It seems that it will be temporary.

After ramping up my running last week I feel good about starting training for a marathon. I look forward to doing some long runs again.

I've got 2 oly tris coming up (it's a good possibility that the later one may be a du), so I can't stop cycling just yet. The bike is my least favorite leg.

Congrats to Mary on her race! Your race report cracked me up!

The injury bug has finally bitten me. Lucky for me I can still swim and bike without issues. Running is very painful.

Since I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, I have diagnosed myself with piriformis syndrome--literally a pain in the butt. My Physician Assistant friend will be back at work on Tuesday. He is very well versed on athletic injuries, hopefully he can point me in the right direction.

So, the tris on Aug 25th and Sep 22nd are question marks but still in my plans. The 10K and 1/2 marathon this fall will not happen.

I know everyone has races coming up in August and September--good luck and have fun!

Thanks!  Glad to entertain.   Sorry you have a pain in your butt.   I have one of those - it is called my job.....   Hope you can still do your tris.

I thinkmy next race will be a sprint -   October.  time to run train and time to master a race before the end of the season.

Tri, Girl, Tri is in Napa,

Treasure Island on Treasure island across from San Francisco.  They say the bike has alot of turns and pot holes.....

Distressing news on my end. My only tri event for the year has come upon scandalous times. For those of you who have had any experience with the Lake Geneva Extreme Sports events (including the LG Tri), you know that their events are notoriously disorganized and poorly supported. On Aug 2, USA Triathlon officially withdrew its sanctioning and insurance for all LGES events for two years.

“Upon investigation it was observed and documented that several key requirements for USA Triathlon sanction approval were not met,” said Kathy Matejka, event services director for USA Triathlon. “USAT has a fundamental responsibility to ensure that race directors are providing basic safety, security and fairness at sanctioned events. Our members and all race participants must have full confidence in these principles."

Now, I'm not a USAT member and I'm not some sort of hoity toity that only goes in for sanctioned events, but it sends a pretty clear message to me that the RD is only out for the money and does not have the best interest of the athletes first and foremost. As a result, I am boycotting my ONLY scheduled tri of the year.

But they can't keep me down! One of my friends was planning to do the HIM with me and we reasoned that there we could get a whole lot of support along a course for less than our combined $300 entry fee. While it is still in the planning stages (starting tonight), we intend to do a HIM of our own design in the LG area. The only thing that will be missing is the timing chip.

The date of this inaugural event is yet to be set, but will likely be either September 15th or 16th. The reason for this lengthly post is to invite all of you interested in joining us to take advantage of the support we are lining up. The entry fee is free, unless you wish to contribute chicken, buns, pasta salad, chips, pretzels, beer, etc. for a "post race gathering" at the newly purchased Casa de Watters in scenic Walworth, WI.

Let me know if anyone is interested. If there is enough interest (ie. one person) for an Oly distance, I could always design a course that would loop once to accomodate both distances on the same course. The more the merrier!
