Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Asparagus Raft (Steven Raichlen) 1 pound asparagus (the stalks shouldn’t be too thin) Set up the grill for direct grilling and preheat to high. Snap off the woody bases of the asparagus and discard. Trim the ends with a knife so the stalks are a uniform length. Skewer 4 or 5 asparagus spears together, using toothpicks or bamboo skewers. (Think of a Huck Finn-type raft!) In a small bowl, combine the sesame oil, soy sauce, and garlic and stir with a fork to mix. Brush this mixture on the asparagus rafts on both sides. Season the rafts with a little salt and lots of pepper. When ready to cook, place the rafts on the hot grate and grill until nicely browned on both sides, 2 to 4 minutes per side. Sprinkle the asparagus rafts with the sesame seeds as they grill. You can serve the asparagus as rafts, or unskewered. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome back everyone. I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful Memorial Day. Andy - way to be smoke free. As far as hot spots go, I would get them with my speedplays, but they went away with the KEOs. Maybe adjust your cleat. Matt - forget about riding together in CA, WE ARE GOING SWIMMING!!!! Barry - that is the saddest and funniest thing I've ever heard of. Tevor - serious hard core racing. Sadly the bolt on my left crank is broken on the TT bike and I have my first race of the year on Sunday. Gotta love paying $15 to overnight a $11 part! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kyla, do I have a peeing story for you. My father was in the Army during the Gulf war and when the division was trucking through the desert they would stop and the men would pee on the tires of the trucks. The women had a covered truck to use but certainly didn't want to be out done by the men so they developed what were called Thunder Buckets. All the women would pee in their buckets in the trucks and then get out and throw the contents on the tires of the trucks! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! |

I know I can do it and I will update the distance as soon as I can. Then it is time to cook on the grill. We got a new one so I expect to use it every evening. Nothing better than grilled food. We grilled some veggies last night. Grilled veggies are GREAT! Yellow Squash, zucchini, eggplant, red onion, and whole mushrooms are all great on the grill. Skewer the mushrooms without any seasoning or oil. For the reset, cut the eggplant in 1/8" oval slices, cut the squash in long planks that are 1/8" thick (if they are long squash, then cut the plank in half to shorten), peel the onions without cutting off the root "knot" and then cut in quarters. Use a bit of canola oil to make sure that they veggies have a slight oil coating and then season with kosher salt (add pepper, granulated garlic or whatever else works for you like Cavendars or Creole seasoning). Grill, turning 3 times to make pretty little grill marks - don't burn. If you have good marks and the the veggie is not quite done or you want to keep them hot, then put them on the bun rack... Freakin' yummy on sandwiches (with or without meat), as a side, in salads, etc... Oh yeah, steaks and chicken are good grilled too oh man that sounds good, I am gonna have to make that. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Off to the 8th grade promotion. Gotta say, even with this being the third kid, this is ridiculous. They're just moving on to high school.....not the real world. Huge production, and it annoys me. We live in an area with a 98% HS graduation rate, finishing middle school really shouldn't be a big thing. hmmph. rant over. oh, and my bike's not ready to pick up from the shop, so that messes with tomorrow. hmmph. rant really over. Off to watch 420 overdressed 13/14 year olds walk across a stage. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mmmmmm.... recipes!!! YUM!! HUGE thanks to FattyFats for being my little cheering squad today! I set out to do 7 hours, and did a 37-mile loop for starters that took me about 2:22, so I figured I'd do that 3x and call it a day. I needed to loop home to swap out bikes as I'm still working through some knee pain and the strategy was to do tri bike, then road bike, then back to tri if knee was OK. First loop = good. 2nd loop = HATED being on my road bike! Really, it was an interesting switch to make -- it felt so wide and clunky! 3rd loop = happy back on the tri bike, winds picking up with this evening's storm moving in, cruising along merrily and BAM, fsssssssssssssssssssss. Crap!! Rear flat, tri bike. Ugh. Can't turn bike upside down w/aero bottle, so off with that, wheel off, blah blah blah. Tire came off amazingly easy. Hole in tube was big enough that I couldn't put air in it to find it. Noticed a small tear in the tire that went clear through -- not good, but figured it was OK. My CO2 didn't work like I expected (I have the worst luck with those things) but I hand-pumped enough to move on. When I mounted the tire again I noticed a huge gash up the side, about an inch long. I had a hecuva time getting that rear wheel back on -- in fact, I had to get help from a woman and her son passing by. And even then something was clicking when I rode. Ugh!! (I have totally mastered rear removal/replacement on the road bike but clearly need to do it more slowly on the tri bike and pay attention and figure it out.) I knew I was only about a mile from a LBS so I figured I'd go there and get their thoughts on riding 2 more hours on that tire. As I figured with both the side gash and the puncture hole thing on the tire, I'd be playing with fire. So I ponied up for a new tire. (Actually, had to phone home to hubby for a credit card # as a new tire was beyond the $20 I keep for emergencies!) Got that all fixed but then was in a time crunch due to needing to get home to the kids. (Hubby got them ready for school so I could leave early today.) So rather than do my 3rd loop, I did out-and-backs on the trail and then headed home when I knew I'd be over 100 miles -- figured if I wasn't going to hit 7 hours at least I'd do a century and be happy with that. The bummer about the flat was that it really monkeyed with nutrition. I didn't have one of my bottles closed and lost a bunch of high-calorie mixture when it was upside down -- doh! So I pretty much lost track of how much I ate, not to mention I had some stand-around time at the store, etc. In any case, that was my last monster workout pre-CDA. I have some big ones left, but that was the doozy. Glad it's in the rearview mirror! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So our 6 year old made the swim team today, all they had to do was swim 25m. He made it about 3/4 of the way and had to grab the rope then started again. I think it was to just make sure they didn't panic in the water. I guess the have a kindergarden group they prep for next year to compete. They still go to the pool 5 days a week for an hour. And there is a bike race next weekend that he got a flyer for from school he wants to do. LOL he is going to be faster than us in a year or so. Edited by dalessit 2010-06-01 8:44 PM |

Our 8-and-unders do :30 -- same drill, swim a 25 and you're on the team. So cute. Their workouts are 250-300 yards each day, all 25's. Your son will love it! Love that he's adding the bike racing as well. Great kid!!! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, so I am back. I really appreciate the support and kind words this group has shown me in this tough time. Short version is that it was a hard week, but very high quality family time. And I learned just how amazing my wife is. I mean I knew I married above my station, I just did not know how far above. One thing I will share that is not tri related and is not related to the real reason we were there: I went noodling for the first time Noodling is the process of catching a catfish without a hook and line. You get in the water and swim over to where the catfish's lair is. The lair is usually at least 3 or 4 feet down underneath a rock or in a cave, so you have to dive down under the water to get there. Then you stick your hand into the lair, and the catfish chomps down on it. At that point, you grab the fish (in all fairness, the fish sort of already has you), and you pull it out of its lair and out of the water. Basically fishing with no hook, no line and only your hand for bait. I did it for the first time and caught a 35 lb fish. Ok - non-tri related post over.
