So cool! BA ROONS! Who doesn't ruv those? ;)

I had heard about this, and also about the balloon project regarding global warming. Fascinating stuff. Only related by balloon involvement, but still. :)

At first I was all "why the heck are they calling it 'Project Loon'?  Are they all crazy maniacs or not right in the head or something?"  Yeah, today isn't a smart day for me.  Undecided

And you from a country where EVERYBODY wants loonies and twonies ... ;)

I know!  I'm a disgrace to my country... I'll have to wrestle a moose or eat a massive helping of poutine to try and get back in the good graces.

Salty and I, being such givers, would assist you out of your disgrace with that poutine.

Also, I think Salty is depressed over the loss of the "I'm my own grandpa" type scenario where she would be calling me Mom. She needs some grease on grease on grease to get over it and also prepare for her track meet tomorrow :)

I'm still hung up on the beignets Embarassed I luff fried bread!!!!!!! Donuts... beignets... sopapillas....

WHAT THE HELLZ IS THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE!

Am I the only one trying to hit race weight this season?  You guys are killing me. *whimpering"

hmmm....I've been of the opinion that it's whatever weight I'm at when I start a race. Laughing

That used to be my opinion, but then I know how much easier it is to run and bike 5lbs less than I am right now.  8, and I would be a racing machine.  Whatevs though, seriously.  It's not that big of a deal. Unless I'm reading about beneits and poutine all afternoon;P

And I really, really like food.  Like? No. Love.  The only way I really lose is just by upping activity.  I don't do any serious food restriction.  That never goes well.

Maybe I should do more yoga.  And swimming. And napping.

Speaking of which, i just thought I'd let you all know that the expansion cracks that are every 25 yds of 15 miles of my commute have now put bruises, yes BRUISES, on my azz where my sitz bones contact my saddle.  If I am going to have bruises on my azz, I do not want them from my forking bike. Oy.

I hear ya. The word "restriction" in this context kinda rubs me wrong...I like "moderation" much better. It allowed me to have that spoonful of cookie dough earlier...and glass of wine later Tongue out

But I must say, despite my joking, as studies and own experience have shown, running is significantly easier at a "race weight"... as well as benefits for yoga, swimming, and napping.

Let's compare notes after you see this.      I actually like this version much better than the Robert Redford version but will refrain from comment until after you see it.

Nick Carroway is one of my favorite narrators. I did not appreciate the implication that he was crazy. I kind of had to grit my teeth and look away in those scenes.

And they left out the whole "Old Dutch Settlers . . . fresh breast of the new continent . . " That is one of my favorite passages in literature. But they did get the "beating oars . . . ceaselessly into the past" that tears me up every time.

DiCaprio was okay as Gatsby. I was skeptical. And I didn't think anyone could do Daisy better than Mia Farrow, but it worked.

I had students who saw it, and I'm sure when it started they said, "Oh, damn. There's that green late that Squires kept yammering on and on and on about."

They kept "orgastic." Smile

What did you think?

The only major beef I had was with the music score.    Rap, really?  But then the director segued  gracefully the new music  into period appropriate music.  It was a stroke of genius to use "Rhapsody in Blue" at a critical moment.

DiCaprio portrayed Gatsby as a flawed person much more than Redford did.   Whilst Nick's portrayal as Nick being in an asylum to dry out and writing the story was clever, to me, if not exactly true to the book.  This does reflect Fitzgerarld's problem with alcohol and we all know that the character of Nick was a reflection of Scott.    But I love that most of the dialog and Nick's narration's was lifted from and is true to the prose that we so love of Fitzgerald.  The period sets and the juxtaposition of the Have's and Have Not's  served the story well.

I didn't recognize the actors who played Daisy, Jordan, or Tom.  I thought they did more than credibly in there roles.   I fell in love with Jordan when I first read the book ever so long ago and have fallen in love all over again with the character and the actress who portrays Jordan in this version.  (Hey, I'm a flawed character so don't rag on me about whom I fall in love with, whether it's a character in literature or a real life person.    Hmmm, those of us with degrees in English Literature some times don't much differentiate betwixt the two....)

I loved the portrayal of Wolfsheim along with the  striving cultures that were outside of the Great White Cause that was the world of Daisy and Tom and the one that Gatsby so desperately wanted to be a part of.

It's been two weeks since I've seen the movie and methinks I will go see it tomorrow to see what I missed the first time around.

The Great Gatsby is the great American novel, in my very humble opinion.

That is pure win right there Jo.  Nice job. How do you feel?  And you're streaking again--yay!

I haven't listened to the Vedder album yet.  My trip got cancelled this week, but I'm quite sure I'll be making it next week.  I like uninterrupted time to devote to an album.  There aren't many albums I buy in their entirety anymore.  This is a special occasion, even if it does seem a bit weird to be buying the soundtrack to an anti-material things movie:)  I never mind spending money to support artists though.  Totally g2g.

So pleased I will let him know.  He will be delighted too.

I'm going to squad tonight.  I'm going to get there 45mins early and do my Brenton Drills then a Neil Brooks workout (ex Aussie Olympic gold medalist now friends on facebook!!)

Then squad - hoping to get in about 4km if i can stay cramp free.

First two weeks were dreadful, almost like having the flu, lethargic achey no way you can work out, craving a fix of sugar to give you the high.

I have combatted that if I'm desperate and feeling lightheaded etc, have an apple of some strawberries with cream (yum)

I'm now I think fat adapted, that is I'm using fat as fuel rather than carbs.

Oh the streak, got off to a bad start.  I'm running in a minute (lunchtime here) so back to square 1 for me!

If ever you feel like tackling No Sugar No Grains, give Vinnie Tortorich a listen - he's a funny guy too.  Podcast number 24 tackles the sciencey stuff behind his ideas.

The Great Gatsby is the great American novel, in my very humble opinion.

I tell my students that about twenty times a semester. I read it every year, which means I've read it at least twenty times. I have whole passages memorized. I adore that book.

I also have literary crushes. Gatsby is one. John Grady Cole is another. I tell my students that John Grady makes me wish I were 16 again, oh, and I guess fictional. But whatever. Like you said. Not a lot of difference.

Wolfsheim was brilliant. And I also loved the portrayal of the Valley of Ashes.

I had never pictured black servants at the Buchanan's before, but it was very poignant when Tom was spilling his vile racism to have them standing there. I pictured everyone at the table rolling their eyes sarcastically just as Luhrmann had them do.

Who doesn't love a pink suit???

One thing I missed was Mr. Gatz coming in for the funeral. I can see why they cut him, for simplicity sake, but I like what he adds to Jay's history in the book.

Is Adrienne's 3k this evening??? Sending fast vibes.

I am riding in Austin today Surprised. If you know the traffic here, you will understand my trepidation. The bike shop guy talked to me about it for about 20 minutes yesterday. I bought a bike route map that has all the dangerous streets flagged. I think he and I came up with a safe, enjoyable route to downtown. Once down there (about 13 miles away), I'll be able to catch the hike/bike trail along Lady Bird Lake (looks more like a river to me, but whatev). I am also going to ride the Lance Armstrong Bikeway. I am in Lance country, after all. No shortage of LiveStrong stuff down here.

I won't get any really speedy riding in today, but I will get a lot of to test out that new saddle.

For me, a lot of the later stuff might help a little with achiness, but tend to get the spring back in my step with being more active. Like with the light run and some strides. Ride the bike, but going light on effort and higher than normal on cadence. If you have some warm-up stuff and/or drills to help with range of motion before a harder workout, than that could help too. But probably don't actually do the hard workout yet. Movement without a lot of intensity.

I could stand to do more of this too with all the biking affecting the early miles of a run as much as it does.

I've tried with Fitzgerald and Faulkner. I've really, really tried. I just can't get into them.

But then again, I'm a Steinbeck girl. And I can't expect anyone to compete with a great American author who had a blue poodle named Charley.

I've been wanting to post for a while that my life has turned into Jarndyce & Jarndyce, and I figured you two would probably understand what that means.

I just have to post the awesome ... The smiley Indonesian guy is Rami, who taught me the four competition strokes over 30 years ago. The white dude is Coach Kaler, who killed me for some giant total period of time between when I was 10 and 16. They both worked together at my school starting in the '80s ... went their separate ways and now they are BACK TOGETHER at that same school coaching again! I almost wish I had kids so I could throw them in the pool with them.

Hm, no silver-fox piglets? (Actually those guys aren't silver at all. They still look exactly the same as 30+ years ago).

Okay, how about posting the cute? Salty and Peppa, those louse-ridden rats.
